The terraced Sunken Garden features a circular opening along a path which is paved with stones, ringed by rose bushes and larger ornamental shrubs. In the center of the opening is a square pond with fountain, ringed by low shrubs. It is one of five formal gardens landscaped by Robert Cridland from Philadelphia, who specialized in Colonial Revival gardens. The terraced Sunken Garden was developed in 1932 under the direction of Martha Berry to honor her oldest sister Eugenia, who married Italian Prince Enrico Ruspoli. Flowering cherry trees in the sunken garden were official gifts to Martha Berry from the Japanese government. Many of the day lilies there were gifts from the Greater Atlanta Hemerocallis Society and the Damascus Gardens in Lilburn, Georgia. For more information see Dickey, Ouida W., ed. Berry Trails: an Historic and Contemporary Guide to Berry College. Mount Berry, Ga.: Berry College, c2001, p. 11.
