The initial structure built by Thomas Jefferson Johnson about 1827, was replaced in 1850 by English architect John Wind. Improvements continued until an accidental fire in the winter of 1934 consumed all but the east wing. The undamaged section was incorporated in to the present house which Abram Garfield completed in 1936.
