Large rectangular stuccoed brick church with tiled roof featuring Italianate windows with arched hood molds, paired roof brackets, and a portico topped by a large domed cupola. The portico has an entablature and pediment supported by six two-story heroic Corinthian columns. A portal window is centered in the pediment. Constructed around 1860, the church originally had a gallery at the rear which was used by the slaves for the short period before the Civil War. During the latter part of the Civil War, the building was used as a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers. Subsequently it was used for Emory College's commencement exercises. Prominent pastors of the First United Methodist Church congregation were the Reverends Samuel Anthony (1838), Eustace W. Speer (1857), William T. Parks (1861), and Lundy H. Harris, who also served as a professor at Emory College. His widow was Georgia author Corra W. Harris. For more information see Williford, William Bailey. The Glory of Covington. Atlanta: Cherokee Publishing Co., c1973, pp. 70-71.
