Designed by Alister McKenzie with the aid of Bobby Jones, the course was built on the site of the former Fruitland Nurseries. Originally the property operated as an indigo plantation and was owned by Dennis Redmond. In 1857 he sold the property, named Fruitlands, to Louis Alphonse Berckmans. Berckmans and his son Prosper Julius Alphonse operated the Fruitlands Nursery. The nursery ceased operations in 1918.
