Two-story house with a stuccoed brick lower story and a wood frame upper story, featuring a two-story portico with entablature and pediment supported by four fluted heroic Ionic columns on square piers. The small balcony over the entrance is supported by brackets and enclosed by a balustrade. The entrance features sidelights and transom. The porch floor extends from the portico on both sides and is enclosed by a balustrade. The house began in 1848 as a raised cottage. In the late 1800's the structure was enlarged in the Greek Revival tradition. Hawthorne Heights is so-named because of the thick hawthorne hedge surrounding the eight acre garden. In the garden is one of the tea bushes sent to Washington from Japan by Commodore Perry when he opened the ports of Japan to trade in 1854. Harts and Sibleys were raised here, including the children of Mrs. Jennie Hart Sibley. Mrs. Harold Lamb, a daughter of Jennie Hart Sibley, collected fine antiques and added to those her father and mother had bought while traveling abroad. The house is within the Union Point Historic District.
