- Description:
- New Face on Capitol Hill is a fifteen-minute industrial film from 1961 that exhibits the labor and craftsmanship of Georgia Marble Company employees as they quarry, finish and carve Georgia marble for the reconstruction of east façade of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The film begins with a sequence of some of marble structures inside the nation's capital, including: the Washington Monument; the National Gallery of Art; the Lincoln Memorial; the statue Abraham Lincoln, seated inside the Lincoln Memorial; the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; and the Jefferson Memorial. These images exhibit the beauty and omnipresence of marble memorials and monuments in Washington, D.C. Following this sequence, Sam Rayburn, the Speaker of the House and chairman of the Commission for the Extension of the U.S. Capitol, is shown standing outside the east entrance of the Capitol. Next, the film features the U.S. Capitol Building under construction with the east façade removed. The film then moves to a segment of scenes that take place at the Georgia Marble Company in Pickens County, Georgia. This segment follows the quarrying and finishing of one of the twenty-four massive new Georgia marble columns for the Capitol. This sequence contains images of stone cutters and stone carvers operating marble operation machinery and tools at the Georgia Marble Company in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The marble quarrying facility footage includes images of a quarry, a channeling machine and a derrick boom. The next sequence of film details the completion of the Capitol columns at the Georgia Marble Company's finishing facility in Pickens County, Georgia. This footage includes images of the column being shaped by several machines, including a wire saw, a carborundum wheel, and a turning lathe. Additionally, the film contains footage of the highly-developed craftsmanship of the stone carvers as they replicate in marble some of the original sandstone carvings from the U. S. Capitol with air-powered chisels at the Georgia Marble Company in Pickens County as well as the Capitol grounds, where the stone carvers worked on-site. The film also contains footage of the celebration ceremony held for the placement of the first column at the Capitol, and is followed by footage of the setting of the remaining columns. Individuals identified in this segment include the Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn, Vice President Richard M. Nixon, U.S. Representative Phil Landrum from the 9th District of Georgia, and Architect of the Capitol J. George Stewart. The reconstruction of the east side of the Capitol Building was finished just prior to President John F. Kennedy's inauguration; the film contains footage and audio of the event. Finally, the film closes with images of the new marble exterior and sculptures on the east façade of the Capitol.
