Text of marker: "4TH & 23D A.C. ADVANCE. Howards 4th A.C. was aligned along this ridge (Mt. Vernon Rd.) from a point 0.5 mi. N.E. of Crossroads Ch. To 1.5 mi. S.W., at the river. These troops reached this ridge July 12, 13, 1864, having crossed the Chattahoochee at Power's & Isom's ferries. Hascall's div. (23d A.C.) was intrenched on Howard's left (along Mt. Vernon Rd.), when both lines were adjusted July 14. Sherman, from h'dq'rs here (July 17-18), directed initial movements of Federal forces, from Roswell to Pace's Ferry, toward Atlanta. From these environs the 23d A.C. marched via Sandy Springs to Old Cross Keys, July 17; the 4th, via Power's Fy.
