The registration area in the Trading Post Is open as follows:
8:30 AM - 4:00 PM 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM 8:00 AM - 10:30 AM
This area also serves as the information center providing lost and found services, drop boxes for evaluations, and staff to answer questions. After hours (until 9:00 PM), attendees may go to the Information Center in the Callaway Building.

Meal tickets are provided with your registration package. Please be sure to bring the appropriate tickets to each meal and event. Also included in your registration package are raffle tickets for both the Wednesday and Thursday evening socials.
MESSAGES

All attendees who requested lodging are assigned to a specific cabin. Please do not lock your cabin; others will not be able to get in. If you inadvertently lock your cabin, please go to the registration area for assistance. Attendees are not permitted to enter cabins to which they are not assigned.

As chancellor of the University System of Georgia, Erroll B. Davis Jr. is responsible for the state's 35 public colleges and universities. The University System has 253,500 students, 35,000 faculty and staff, and an annual budget of $5 b illion. Additionally, the University System of Georgia has administrative responsibility for the Georgia Public Library Service, which manages the state's 58 public library systems.
Davis, who took office on February 6, 2006, had served as chairman of the board of Alliant Energy Corporation - an energy holding company with $8.3 billion in total assets and annual operating revenues of $3 billion - since 2000. He joined Alliant in 1998 as president and chief executive officer. Davis retired from his dual roles as president and CEO in July 2005, and retained the chairman's post until his move to the University System.

Oracle DBAs from all over Georgia attended the 1996 Pre-conference Oracle OBA Camp to learn about SOLtuning, backup and recovery, managing rollback segments, and referential integrity. They attended the camp because the Oracle OBA was considered the most important technical position at most USG institutions to keep Banner running: the position required complex technical knowledge and constant training. This session will examine the aspects of the Oracle database that have enabled the database to run more efficiently across a wide variety of applications, consequently freeing up time for the DBAs to pursue other issues. Strategies for Oracle Database Backup and Recovery: Case Studies

There are two major backup techniques available to an Oracle database administrator. One is offline backup which requires shutting down the database, and the other Is online backup during which the database can keep running. To maintain high availability, particularly in a 24fi environment, It is not acceptable to shut down and Interrupt the database constantly. This presentation will first analyze the business requirements of the Office of Institutional Research, and then carefully examine both backup techniques. The final result will be the technical details for an Oracle database backup on a Linux platform. To verify the effectiveness of the selected backup strategy, the presentation also will detail seven disastrous cases that are common to Oracle databases. For each case, ranging from server parameter rile missing to data file corruption, a detailed roadmap will be provided for timely data recovery.

Using the Web Instead of Microscopes: Online Laboratories!

Online laboratory supplements have changed the teaching of labs at Valdosta State University, particularly microscope-intensive labs in Anatomy and Physiology. Online access increases student interaction with course content while decreasing the time required for microscope use. Online laboratories present histology (cells and tissues), hematology (blood), and supplements to other lab material. High-quality images are presented with descriptive text and in unlabelled versions. In virtual "wet" labs, students determine "patients'' red (hematocrit) and differential white blood cell counts. In this presentation, the development and use of web-based resources for laboratory instruction will be discussed, and the project website will be demonstrated.

Downloading MSWord files for a web course is tedious and generally requires extensive printing. These are not engaging qualities in a web course. Neither faculty nor support staff have the time to update Word documents as web materials, restructure them as web pages, create separate HTML documents, upload them to Vista, then attach them to a learning module. Course Genie uses MSWord to accomplish all these tasks within the familiar Word interface. This presentation will show you how to take any MSWord document and transform it with instructional design best practices for Vista without substantially adding to anyone's work load.

This presentation outlines the techniques used by the Alternative Media Access Center (AMAC) to create electronic textbooks for students with print disabilities. Under federal law, students with print disabilities are entitled to accessible textbooks. This mandate presents an important challenge--the timely conversion of printed materials into accessible and user-friendly digital formats. AMAC delivers whole textbooks and other readings to students with print disabilities. Students than can listen to the electronic texts on a computer using an easily downloadable screen reader. Electronically delivered text (e-text) is the most accessible, user-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective op1ion to accommodate students with print disabilities.

Comparing Student and Faculty Perceptions of Technology Use for Teaching and Learning

Technology Innovation for teaching and learning in traditional higher education classrooms has gained greater acceptance over the past decade, with some institutions highly dependent upon its complete assimilation. But how well do faculty uses of technology match student skills and expectations? This presentation discusses the results of two system-wide surveys of student and faculty perceptions of technology use and effectiveness. The student survey reports on Phase 1 of the USG Student Information Technology Survey, deployed during Spring Semester 2006, and the USG Faculty Course Management System (CMS) Survey, deployed during the WebCT Vista rollout from 2004-2005.

Online Learning: The Student's Perspective

Faculty from many institutions have inquired how students accepted Tegrity as a distance learning tool, and how it has Impacted student grades, retention, and overall satisfaction of online students. We recently conducted a study to measure student responses to these and other questions with Tegrity. In this session, we discuss the survey results and provide an overview of how we use the Tegrity system at MCG. Tegrity's platform enables the production of both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments, and allows students to view, review, fast forward, rewind, or jump to a specific point in a streamed presentation. A Look at E4X: The Next Big Web Technology?

Oracle performed a successful Proof of Concept (POC) to demonstrate the capabilities of Oracle Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) and to show major performance and usability differences between relational reporting and OLAP analytics. The POC consisted of loading data from the Work Assignment Datamart into OLAP cubes. creating Discoverer reports on the cubes. demonstrating drill-out capabilities to Oracle Discoverer Relational, and creating a dashboard using Oracle Portal. Keeping up with ADA: Captioning Multimedia Content

Captioning multimedia content is a vital tool for addressing universal design issues and ADA compliance. Darton College has launched an ambitious project to caption existing online multimedia content in an online program for special education teachers. Using text transcriptions and embedded SMIL file formats, captioning can be added to existing audio, video, or other streaming content. Template files for embedded players simplify the content construction. We will demonstrate captioned content delivery within WebCT Vista and provide coding nuances and links to template resources.

Beyond Podcasts: Delivering Complete Courses via the iPOD

With podcasts becoming an accepted means of delivering instructional resources, Advanced Learning Technologies sought to determine the feasibility of delivering complete college-level credit courses via an iPod. Spurred on by a request from the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), the USG agreed to undertake a test case scenario by re-purposing one unit each from the eCore English 1101 and Spanish 2001 courses for iPod delivery. Come follow along as we describe how we integrated audio files, video flies, iMODS, graphics, and the Notes capability of the iPod along with iTunes to achieve our objective.

Off-the-shell technology now can produce 3D images that project from t he screen and provide students with a better visual representation than flat 2D images in textbooks. The presenters will demonstrate technologies for creating and viewing 3D images in the classroom. Also, we will discuss issues and best practices for developing 3D content. Any educator or multimedia developer who needs to show spatial relationships such as anatomic or geometric Illustrations will benefit from this session.

Next year Darton plans to add Cardiovascular Technology Program in partnership with Valdosta and Savannah. This program will be designed as a 2+2 with Armstrong Atlantic State University. Quizzes in WebCT Vista can be enhanced with embedded rich media in assessment items. Valdosta State University uses streaming media, flash video, graphics, and HTML tables for innovative quiz construction in WebCT Vista courses in American Sign Language. Visual assessment is integral to the learning process in these courses. Code examples for embedding media and recommended media production guidelines are presented, as well as step-by-step instructions for inclusion in Vista assessments. In addition, we will discuss limitations and advantages of RealPlayer and Flash formats, question formats, and security issues.

Web-based training for IT student workers and staff can increase effectiveness and improve IT client services. Student workers fill a critical role in providing IT support on most college campuses, but high turnover rates complicate training and qualification issues. To assure quality training for student workers, the Valdosta State University Distance Learning Department and the Division of Information Technology have created a training program using WebCT Vista. Instructional designers collaborated with IT staff to develop the training materials, and IT staff serve as instructors. An overview of the online training program is presented and HelpDesk Learning Modules are demonstrated.

Instructors with Average Computer Skills Can Create Effective Instructional Videos

During the past five years, we have been investigating the creation of instructional videos to use in online instruction. We have invested in commercial video products already developed by textbook manufacturers, using camera video taping that is then digitized, and products such as Camtasia to create screen-captured instructional mini-videos of up to 10 minutes in length that can be delivered using Vista or the open web. We now have a standard that is multibrowser friendly and streams without a streaming server. Come see how any teacher can easily learn to create this type of Flash video independently.

What will vou miss most about vour iob?
I' ll miss talking to the people that I work with at O IIT and on the campuses. Enterprise
Infrastruc.;ture Services (ElS) has the best folks. John Scoville ha. hired a lot of good people.
bright people who work well together as a team. Evcrybotly jumps in and help. out w ithout drawing any lines between their groups.

What has changed most since vou staned out?

Things were simpler when I started out. Technology is like a puzzle that has a lot of pieces-only the puzzle keeps getting bigger with more and more pieces.
Whafs vour funniest storv lrom Rock Eagle?

When I was working registration. we registered a man from one of the campuse for his first Rock Eagle experience. The man l eft to go to his cabin. A few minutes later, he was back to tell us that there was a mistake in his room assignment. The room wasn't
private. it had no lock. no telephone. no TV: ,rnd the
poor guy needed Tylenol.
What have vou enJoved the most about vour vears with USG?

Th.e people al the System level and on the campuse::: are what impress me the most. People do their j obs and do tbem well . I' II mis:. the interaction. A lot of the people that I know have retired already. but r ve enjoyed my work and didn1 want Lo retire early.
What are vou planning to do when vou reUre? Do vou have a "retirement career'' or another iob that voure starting?

No, I have a list of home projects that may take me awhi le. and I' 11
spend more ti me on some of my other interest~. I may do more volunteering at church-driving the van and bus for the senior church group, playi ng bass and acoustic guitar. singing, and helping out anywhere else I c.;an. M y wi fe Judy will still be working. so we dont have plans to travel. but we do hope to take more family camping trips. I also plan to spend more time with our four grandkids.
What is vour most treasured possession and does ithave six strings?

I guess my most treasured material possessions would be my bass guitar and acoustic guitar as J love music. But our camper ranks ri ght up there as we love camping and the outdoors.
Which living person do vou mosl admire?

My Dad. He hm; been through so much - losing a 4-year old son (my brother) due 10 a traffic accident. losing a 42 year old daughter (my only sister) due to cancer and losing his wi fe tour Mom) in 2000 due to heart failure. Through all o f this he has never lost his faith in God and his positive attitude. He is 86 today and sti ll wal ks 5-7 miles daily and keeps a positive outlook on l ife.

M y personal mono is - Life is 100 shon to not be positi ve and make the be tout of every clay. M y work motto is - We may not make much money but we sure are STUPID!! !
