LETTER

~ t o Rock Eagle and the 34th un;vecs;ty System of Georgia Annual Computing Conference!
I am especially pleased to welcome you to Rock Eagle this year following several weeks of uncertainty about whether our traditional facility would be available for our annual conference. However, I am also very glad that Rock Eagle was here to be used as a transition center to house, feed, comfort, and care for over 600 evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. We're fortunate that we can come together here once again to spend a few days with other USG IT professionals to discuss our goals, share our problems and successes, and make plans for the future.
The 2005 Annual Computing Conference offers over 90 presentations, workshop sessions, demonstrations, and discussions that address needs and interests you've identified. Topics include networking, administrative computing and data management, data and voice communications, IT security, Web development, help desk and customer services, teaching and learning with technology, and leadership development. Sessions are available for novices and those with many years of experience.
In addition, approximately 35 vendors will demonstrate the best in new technology, applications, and related services for your evaluation. Be sure and visit the exhibitors and sponsors while you're here. Their contributions and support make Rock Eagle possible.
Thank you for your participation in this conference. IT is the strategic infrastructure upon which the USG and all of its institutions rely. Technology is the basis for the Integrated Learning Environment that is our primary objective and for the administrative functions that support it; and you are the people who make IT happen. Every day, you meet the challenges of procuring the best technology with finite resources, training personnel, consolidating support to reduce duplication of services, and developing strategies to support wide variations in technology. Always, your overarching goal is to support the mission of the University System of Georgia by advancing instruction, research, and service.
I'm pleased that you're here with me to take advantage of this annual opportunity to work together, learn from each other, share your ideas, and enjoy Rock Eagle.
Welcome.

Randall A. Thursby Vice Chancellor/CIO Office of Information and Instructional Technology Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia

WHAT IS A SERVANT LEADER?
Krannert 1 Track: Leadership Development Level: Intermediate
Leadership is as important today as it has been throughout history. Without some person " rallying the troops" when situations demand a person in charge, a successful outcome will not occur. Most often, we view certain personality traits to be essential for this role. The servant leader is a new thought in leadership theories: leaders are made by providing service to others. In this session, we present and discuss attributes of this new model and how it can be leveraged successfully in education and business.

MARKUP, STYLE, AND STANDARDS
Krannert 3
Track: Web Development Level: Intermediate
As browser manufacturers continue to improve support for W3C standards (especially Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)) , it is possible to create accessible, attractive and standards-compliant websites based on XHTML and CSS . However, to realize the benefits of CSS-driven design we need to rethink how to code (X)HTML pages . Embracing " structural " or " semantic" markup will ease the transition from table -based layout to CSS, facilitate browsing from handheld devices, and simultaneously improve accessibility and search engine rankings . We examine the often murky world of semantic markup . We discuss the role of W3C standards in web development, the relationship of CSS to semantic markup, how to code best practices, and review sample code.

MASTERING THE ART OF CUSTOMER CARE: PROFESSIONAL IMAGE, POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE, & BALANCING ACT
International Paper 2 Track: Helpdesk Level:
You've been in the service industry long enough to have mastered it, right? It's simple, go to work, do your job, and if no one complains, you're providing acceptable customer service. Is that all it takes? Unfortunately, many people and even many organizations believe that a customer service position is an entry-level position needing no experience. However, customer care is an art. It requires an understanding of the customer, the organizational culture, needs and goals and skills, which allow you to handle any situation with tact, professionalism, and success. Customer service can make or break a business or organization (public or private) whether customers are internal or externa l. In this session, we will explore some of t he key reasons customer service ca n be consi dered "customer DISservice." We will discuss methods that allow you to better understand customer needs, keep a focus on organizational goa ls, and deliver beyond customer expectations.

PROFILES IN HIGH AVAILABILITY
Krannert 3 Track: Administrative Computing/Data Management Level:AII The term Disaster Recovery conjures visions of earthquakes, fires and 100-year floods. While data centers must plan for these disasters, it is another class of more mundane events; software, systems, or human failures, that are more frequent villains conspiring to produce unacceptable downtime for mission critical applications. The combination of Oracle Real Application Clusters, Oracle Data Guard, Oracle Recovery Manager, and new Oracle Database 10g features such as Flashback Database and Automatic Storage Management, deliver an integrated High Availability (HA) solution that protects businesses from disruption caused by planned or unplanned downtime. This session discusses production HA implementations for Oracle databases supporting packaged and custom application environments. It will show how deployment using Oracle best practices for High Availability can keep production databases up and running in the face of events that would otherwise wreak havoc with business operations. IMPLEMENTING A CHEMICAL INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN A DISTRIBUTED ORDERING/RECEIVING ENVIRONMENT
Krannert 1 Track: Administrative Computing/Data Management Level: Intermediate
Georgia Tech is implementing CHEMATIX-a web-based chemical inventory management system used to track chemical containers from the time they arrive on campus until they are used or disposed of. We show how the system can be used to order chemicals via the built-in e-commerce capabili ty, generate barcode labels for the appropriate containers , scan the barcodes with a handheld scanner, upload the scanned barcod es into the system, and reconcile any differences between the scanned containers and the current inventory in the database. Also, we discuss how using the system can improve safety. We outline the implementation challenges of this project.

Tables existed in HTML to display tabular data . Tables had an unanticipated side affect: a grid that designers could use to lay out images and te xt . However, this grid didn 't always work well with text readers, conform to accessibility guidelines, or display consistently in all browsers. Now it is possible for designers to achieve the same layouts and presentations using standard markup and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) . These pages load faster, are easier to redesign, and are more accessible to everyone. We demonstrate the use of CSS by breaking down the code in the Rock Eagle 2005 website. In the process, we show how Firefox's Web Developer Extension will save time and stress for all web developers.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER: THE CHALLENGES OF AUTHENTICATION
Hastings Track: Security Level: Beginner
While campuses are making some headway into providing real or apparent single sign-on access to campus portals, WebCT, email , and student information, more collaboration and planning are needed to provide real or apparent single sign-on access to other systems or resources after users are within those environments. The current environment can require users to re-authenticate one or more times using various credentials for different resources, including access to library content. This roundtable presentation discusses problems and possible solutions regarding authentication and re-authentication from one system to the next. Presenters provide brief discussions followed by a question and answer dialogue.
