Looking For Lincoln
Wednesday, February 11, 9 PM
Public television plays a major role in the nationwide Lincoln Bicentennial celebration in 2009 with this twohour broadcast that explores the life and legacy of the man widely considered one of America's best and most enigmatic presidents. The documentary, hosted by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. (African American Lives, Oprah's Roots), addresses many of the controversies surrounding Lincoln - race, equality, religion, politics, depression - by carefully interpreting evidence from those who knew him and those who study him today.

PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger Discusses Value of Public Broadcasting During Recent Visit to GPB

PBS Pres ident & CEO Paula Kerger recently visi ted Geo rgia Public Broadcasting's studios in Atl anta fo r an event at which she spoke abo ut the val ue of programming offered by publi c broadcasting statio ns such as G PB.
W hile visiting the statio n, Kerger was interviewed by G PB Radio's Ri ckey Bevingto n fo r Georgia Gazette.
In the fo llowin g excerp ts fro m the in terview, Kerger discusses PBS's co mmitm ent to serving viewers an d what keeps th e organization viabl e in a challenging media environment.
Rickey Bevington: Obviously you and I are both publi c televisio n watchers.. .can you articulate what it is that PBS offers people that other o rganizations do n't offer?
Pau1a Kerger: Well , I th ink it's true that our commitment is to qual ity. I can describe it in very simple terms, which is that our shareholders are not o n Wal l Street. They're o n Main Street. And so when we begin our work, wheth er it's fo r a childre n's program o r whether it's news coverage o r whether it's a documentary, our prin cipal goal is to serve the Ameri can publi c and to share info rm atio n th at will hopefu lly entertain , will inspire, will o pen people's minds, and will give a provocati ve poi nt of view.
Rickey Bevington: And yet, PBS has to surv ive in this marketp lace. How is the o rganization working to stay

com petiti ve in a med ia market wi th more and more co mpetitio n?
Pau1a Kerger: O ne is at the very beginn ing, we knew to stay true to o ur m ission and tr ue to th e kind of program ming that has been th e hallma rk of publi c broadcasting, which is a co mmitment to authenticity and a co m mitment to quality. I think the second th ing is to be ensitive to the changing media landscape, in that people are now accessing media co ntent in many di ffe rent places. So I'm very interes ted in maki ng sure that wherever people go, our co ntent is ava ilable to them.
And then I think that the fin al pi ece is that o ur co ntent needs to be strong. It needs to be co mpelling... I'l l give yo u a great example- artS progra mming. T here are many broadcast vehi cles that at o ne point or anoth er had arts as part of their broadcast schedule. T hat doesn't exis t anymore. I feel that th e arrs are tre mendously important for Americans, and I feel that it i impo rta nt fo r u as a society to ensure that the arts are accessible ro everyo ne. T here are lots of people that are interested in the arts, and so my decisio n abo ut putting th e ans o n public televi ion and maki ng a deep co mm itment to that is no t driven by whether I can make enough mo ney doing it. It's because I think it's the right thing ro do.

Cover To Cover Celebrates Black History Month

Cover To Cover celebrates Black History Month featuring interviews with some of Georgia and the world 's superb African American writers and poets. Join us throughout February as GPB's Southern Lit Cadre brings you informative and revealing conversations. On February 1, Frank Reiss interviews former Atlanta Hawk Mike Glenn about his new book "Frederick Douglass: The Founding Father of Slavery-Free America." On

February 8, Jeff Calder interviews poet Sean Hill about his collection of poems about his native Milledgeville, "Blood Ties and Brown Liquor." On February 15, Melissa Stiers interviews Pearl Cleage about her latest novel "Seen It All And Done The Rest. " GPB will finish off this month-long celebration of African American literature in Georgia on February 22 with Jesse Freeman's interview with Tony Grooms in a retrospective look back at

his award-winning collection of short stories "Trouble No More. "
Cover To Cover is heard on GPB Radio Sunday nights at 8 PM , and rebroadcast on Thursdays at 11 :30 PM. You can download or stream Cover To Cover on demand online at gpb.org/ covertocover. GPB is committed to Southern Literature of all kinds as part of our mission and our obligation to you as members.

Pearl Cleage

GPB Radio-Behind The Scenes-Melissa Stiers

Melissa Stiers is one of the most talented people you might not know on GPB Radio, but that doesn't mean that you don't hear her work each day. Melissa produces, researches and reports for GPB News, Georgia Gazette, Sustainable Georgia and other programs. She has a background and an advanced degree in creative writing and is a part of GPB 's Southern Lit Cadre, where she conducts writer interviews on Cover To Cover occasionally.

experience: Where did you grow up, and how and when did you come to GPB? I grew up in Peachtree City, but we moved back and forth from here to various parts of Ohio . By the time I graduated from high school in the PTC , I'd been to 12 different schools. I stayed in Georgia for college, then interned in GPB's newsroom the summer of 2007 , then remained on as a free-lance reporter. I joined the staff in January a year ago to produce and report for Morning Edition and Georgia Gazette.

Melissa Stiers

experience: What is the most interesting story you've worked on lately? Election night at the Democratic Party headquarters, hands down . I've never seen such a varied group of line-dancers.

experience: What do you do for fun when you are not producing content for GPB? Smother my daughter with all the Iovin' I've got, dance flamenco , and push words around on a page to find a poem.

experience: What do you like most about being a part of public broadcasting? I love the opportunity to kindle dialogue in an ever-expanding, diverse community.
