Are red sunflowers common? I saw one recently and had never seen one before. Are they easy to grow?
Most sunflowers are yellow, but red ones are becoming increasingly common in gardens. The brilliant orange-red sunflowers you see for sale from florists are yellow sunflowers that are dyed, however. Natural red varieties are closer to wine, maroon and rusty reds than pure red. Gardeners can purchase seed packets of red sunflowers with names like 'Strawberry Blonde,' 'Chianti,' 'Cappuccino' and 'Indian Blanket' directly from seed catalogs or at garden centers. Sometimes these red varieties are included in mixed packets of sunflower seeds. They are easy to grow. Although not a true sunflower, tithonia is sometimes called "Mexican sunflower." It is an intense color sometimes described as lacquer red, vermillion or Chinese red and has flowers that look more like single dahlias than sunflowers. It also is easy to grow.
Robert Dasher, a pioneer of the Vidalia @ onion industry, has been selected as the 2010 Georgia winner of the Swisher
Is it too early to plant daffodils? I have just received a bulb catalog and it is not even August.
It is too early to plant spring-flowering bulbs in Georgia, but it is not too early to start selecting the ones you want or to place your order. Ordering early will help ensure you get the varieties you desire as some are available only in limited quantities. Bulb companies generally send bulbs at the appropriate planting time for your area. In Georgia, spring-flowering bulbs can be planted from October through late December in most areas. If you cannot plant bulbs right away, store them in a cool, dry area.
My neighbors and I have a surplus of fruits and vegetables we would like to sell. What kind of license or permit do we need to sell our produce?
You will need a permit from the Georgia Department of Agriculture only if you process the produce in some way, including cutting up any of the fruits and vegetables.

Enjoy Fresh Ga. Apples During Fall Harvest Season
Whoever coined the old saying, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," certainly hit the nail on the head. Apples are an important part of a healthy diet, providing modest amounts of many important nutrients. They are a good source of dietary fiber, pectin (a fiber component) and potassium. In addition, apples are low in calories, and have virtually no fat, sodium or cholesterol. Apples also feature a sweet taste, distinctive crunch, and they come in a wide assortment of flavors.
In Georgia, the apple harvest season begins in late July and extends into December. During this period consumers can find fresh Georgia apples at farmers markets, roadside stands and at some apple orchards throughout the state.

Summer gardeners -- why not order a copy of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's cookbook, Seasons of Georgia, for recipes utilizing Georgia Grown@ summer fruits and vegetables?
The cookbook features selected recipes from the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin that utilize fruits and vegetables that are available during each season. The recipes from this kitchen keepsake cookbook were provided by Bulletin readers who shared their favorite recipes throughout the years.
This 192-page book contains a number of beautiful color photographs of some of the prepared recipes, a handy substitution guide, tips and suggestions alongside many of the recipes, and a special "lay flat" binding that makes it easy to use in the kitchen. In addition, there are spaces in the book where users may make their own notations, whether it's a comment about a recipe, or a memory of learning to cook. These personalized notes will make the book a keepsake children and grandchildren will cherish for years to come.
To order, use the form at right. An order form also is available from website www.agr.georgia.gov. Once at the site, click on Market Bulletin, then Articles and Items of Interest and look for the link to the form.

For the last six years the Department has charged hobby growers a license fee of $75.00 per year. This was originally proposed i n August 2003 and adopted on September 25, 2003, however this provision was not published along with the amendments i n January 2008. The Departmentis re-publishingthis fee i n rule 40-4-9-.03(2)(b).
The Department is proposing to change the wording of rule 40-4-9-.03(3) from "Live Plant Dealer" to "Live Plant Dealers, Re-wholesalers, Agent or Broker as defined i n 40-4-9-.01(k)." I t is further proposed to amend the annual registrationfee for live plant dealers, re-wholesalers, agent, or broker from $105.00 to $125.00 for each location where plants are held or maintained.
The Department is also proposing to remove the term "broker" and "re-wholesaler" from rule 40-4-9.03(4) since i t will be included i n rule 40-4-9-.03(3).
I n addition, the Department is proposing to add "shipping" to rule 40-4-9-.06(2) to clarify that a licensee may print its own shipping certificates by applying annually i n writing at the time of license
renewal. Interested persons may call or submit a written
request to obtain a copy of the proposedrules. Please submit written comments to:

Notice of Intent to Consider the Adoption of Amendments to the
Rules relating to Live Plants
The Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin is published biweekly (every two weeks) by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Subscriptions are available via U.S. Mail to Georgia residents at a cost of $10 per year; out-statesubscriptions are available for $20 per year. Out-of-state subscriptions must be within the United States or its territories.
To start a new subscription, send a check or money order payable to Market Bulletin, along with your name, complete mailing address and daytime phone number (in the event the Bulletin office needs to contact you concerning your subscription) to the following address: Market Bulletin, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Martin Luther King Jr. ~ h v eSW, Atlanta, GA 30334-4250. Please allow approximately 30 days for your subscription to begin.
You can sell your produce from your property or at a local farmers market, but check with local city and county governments about what you are allowed to do and what permits or licenses are required to sell in those locations. Some local planning and zoning laws prohibit such activity in some areas. Some farmers markets have requirements and membership fees for selling at their markets.
Is it possible to substitute pecans for pine nuts or walnuts in a basil pesto recipe? Pine nuts are so expensive, and I like to use Georgia products when I can.
Yes, it is possible to use Georgia pecans in your basil pesto instead of pine nuts or walnuts. The pecans may be toasted or used raw. Because pecans taste different than pine nuts and walnuts, you may want to make a small batch at first to see how it compares with what you are used to and to make sure you have just the right mix of basil leaves, nuts, Parmesan cheese, garlic cloves and olive oil.
I f you have questions about services or products regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, visit our website at www.agr.georgia.gov or write us at 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Room 227, Atlanta, GA 30334 or e-mail us at info@agr.georgia.gov.
