L GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE d TOMMY IRVIN, COMMISSIONER Vol. 98, No. 17 . ag consumer line.. Wednesday, August 25, 2010 Farm Front Are red sunflowers common? I saw one recently and had never seen one before. Are they easy to grow? Most sunflowers are yellow, but red ones are becoming increasingly common in gardens. The brilliant orange-red sunflowers you see for sale from florists are yellow sunflowers that are dyed, however. Natural red varieties are closer to wine, maroon and rusty reds than pure red. Gardeners can purchase seed packets of red sunflowers with names like 'Strawberry Blonde,' 'Chianti,' 'Cappuccino' and 'Indian Blanket' directly from seed catalogs or at garden centers. Sometimes these red varieties are included in mixed packets of sunflower seeds. They are easy to grow. Although not a true sunflower, tithonia is sometimes called "Mexican sunflower." It is an intense color sometimes described as lacquer red, vermillion or Chinese red and has flowers that look more like single dahlias than sunflowers. It also is easy to grow. Robert Dasher, a pioneer of the Vidalia @ onion industry, has been selected as the 2010 Georgia winner of the Swisher Is it too early to plant daffodils? I have just received a bulb catalog and it is not even August. It is too early to plant spring-flowering bulbs in Georgia, but it is not too early to start selecting the ones you want or to place your order. Ordering early will help ensure you get the varieties you desire as some are available only in limited quantities. Bulb companies generally send bulbs at the appropriate planting time for your area. In Georgia, spring-flowering bulbs can be planted from October through late December in most areas. If you cannot plant bulbs right away, store them in a cool, dry area. My neighbors and I have a surplus of fruits and vegetables we would like to sell. What kind of license or permit do we need to sell our produce? You will need a permit from the Georgia Department of Agriculture only if you process the produce in some way, including cutting up any of the fruits and vegetables. Apples During Fall Harvest Season Whoever coined the old saying, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," certainly hit the nail on the head. Apples are an important part of a healthy diet, providing modest amounts of many important nutrients. They are a good source of dietary fiber, pectin (a fiber component) and potassium. In addition, apples are low in calories, and have virtually no fat, sodium or cholesterol. Apples also feature a sweet taste, distinctive crunch, and they come in a wide assortment of flavors. In Georgia, the apple harvest season begins in late July and extends into December. During this period consumers can find fresh Georgia apples at farmers markets, roadside stands and at some apple orchards throughout the state.
