THE COTTON HOPPER OR COTTON F LEA
| serious injury to the cotton plants.
The Cotton Hopper has unenead in large numbers over the great-
er part of the cotton area of the state and is reported as doing
The characteristic symptoms of
_ plants affected by this insect is their straight spindley appearance
: _ with very few lateral branches. The young squares are attacked
and these turn brown and drop from the plant. The insects may be
found by walking through the cotton fields and shaking the. plants.
They are very small. greenish- yellow insects which fly very readily
and are hard to catch. They may sometimes be found on the edges
of the upper leaves of the stalk.
; The est sonnel measure for the Cotton Hopper 1S ae dust of
_ super- -fine or flowers of sulphur, applied at the rate of 6 to 8
- pounds per acre at intervals of 5 days. It may be necessary to
make three or more applications, and the field should be examined
between applications to determine whether or not the insects have
been killed. Sulphur should be applied with an ordinary dusting
machine, preferably early in the morning when there is little or no -
breeze and when the cotton plants are covered with dew. If you
are dusting for the boll weevil, mix 2 pounds of sulphur with 1 pound.
EOE ealeium arsenate and dust at the rate of 9 or 10 pounds to the .
acre. So far this year very few weevils have: appeared and-where
_ they are not present: the sulphur should be used alone, as calcium
arsenate will not control the Cotton Hopper.
The cotton plants iproileht to this ofhce supposedly affected by
~ 8% Nicotine Dust around $18.00 a hundred pounds.
the Cotton Happen, have Ehawh: an injury different from that gen-
erally attributed to this insect. Upon examination these plants
were found to be heavily infested with a species of Thrips. The
characteristic injury due to this insect is a severe stunting and cur!-
ing of the tender buds and a ee dwarfing of the tops of the
plants.
This Thrips is a very minute insect scarcely visible to the naked
eye but under a glass it may be seen as a swiftly moving, slender,
yellowish or white, insect. They secrete themselves between the bud-
seales where they occur in large numbers and: seriously injure the
plants by sucking the juice. a
. The best control for the Thrips is a dust of 38% Nicotine Sulphate
and to control both the Thrips and the Cotton Hopper we suggest
: that a mixture of 1 pound of nicotine dust with 2 pounds of sulphur,
applied at the rate of 9 or 10 pounds to,the acre. ,
- applications will be nesessary to control both of these insects. Sul-
Three or more
phur may be purchased at $2.50 to $2.75 a hundred pounds and ~
While these
insecticides may be rather expensive, we believe the farmers will
find it well worth the investment to control these insects as they
will probably do serious damage if they are not checekd.

SOREHEAD
Sorehead is a petty, troublesome dis-
ease when once started in a flock of)
youngsters, as it goes harder with
young stock than with old for the reason
that they do not have the stamina to
For this reason the
poultry raiser should take every pre-
caution to prevent its breakine out in
his flock. This may be done by keep-
ing all coops well cleaned up, and dis
infected, and, where possible, in smalf
brood ccops, screen the coops to keep
the mosquitoes out at night, as sores
made by these pests are more- than
and spread all through the flock. We
also recommend the use of some good
laxative, with diuretic properties. such
as Epsom salts, or permanganate of
potash, in the drinking water about
nid-summer, before the real time for
sorehead to break out. This will in
most caseS ward off the trouble, so
that. it awill pass you by.\. Fhe salts is:
given at the rate of two full tablespoons:
to the gallon of drinking water. Or if
that is =so strong the fowls will not |
.readily drink it, lessen the dose. Give
this to them twice a week, with no oth-
er to drink at those times. The potash
can tbe given at the rate of one-fourth
of a level teaspoon to the gallon of wa-
well stirred. Give this twice a
week as a preventative. Should the
real trouble appear give one of these
remedies regularly during the run of
the disease.
As a treatment for che sores them-
selves, locally use of the following. rem:
edies: Oil of tar, applied with a very
small pointed brush, touching each sore
with the tar. Very often one applica-
tion is sufficient. But if they still look
aggravated, and sore, treat again in two
or three days. Tincture of iodine can
be applieq in the same manner, with
good effect. Some use a stick of caus-,
tic, dipping the point of the brush in,
water and then to the caustic and onto
the sore; this is pretty severe and should
be kept off the hands. Also use care
to keep these remedies out of the fowls
ayes. Have all sanitary conditions the
very best, that your treatment. may be
most effective. ~Southern Ruralist, July

PREVENT SUGARING Or SORGHUM
sue SYRUP. =
Some varieties of sorghum yield sy-
rup that sugars heavily when evapor-
ated to the desired body or -density.
With other varieties less difficulty is
experienced. - Depending also on the
character of the growing season, the
sugaring may be of little consequence,
or sufficiently pronounced to depress 4
the market value of the syrup. Whole-
sale merchants often pay as much as,
10 cents per gallon less for syrup that|
has sugared badly, putting it in the:
class of second-grade syrup when the
2dlor and flavor may be of the best,

STACKING STRAW, SO ) xt WILL
By Walter | L. Pritchard
There was once a rather | small, im-
sportant-acting- man, who had his crew
all assembled ready to begin threshing.
Ahem! Joe, you |.may stadk. the
straw! said he to one of the young men
standing near. *
The other men laughed, for it wasn at
Joes place to. stack the straw. ~.J0
looked serious and began to grumble.
Ahem! (this was a favorite expres-

way, it is a well- -established custom in
this bailiwick that every farmer must.
It takes a rather
goo0q excuse for a man to get out of
stacking his straw. avhen threshing time
comes. Some hired men (these are the,
ones looking for an excuse to quit work)
-will even refuse to go into le em-
plcyers strawstacksthat is going too
4 feor,
Out in the Wheat Belt nobody gets:
in the straw. Straw is plentiful and
land is rather cheap, so that a.stack
can be blown over a half-acre without
any great loss. These stacks with the
slanting sides are really nothing more
than piles of straw, the kind a rooste1
will have no difficulty in scaling in or
dex to crow from the top.
But with us straw is valuable. We
never have any too much, so the straw
is stacked as carefully. as possible. :
However, on account of the establish-
ed custom of every man on his own
strawstack, we find many - stacks built |
better than. others.
The Caved- In Top
Some folks just dont know how to
build a good strawstack, so I shall give
a few rules that I have followed. First
of all, never leave a dent in the top of
the stack, or there will be some cuss
words when you step up on that stack
in the middle of the winter to open it
up. A depression in the top of a stack.
always means a cake of ice, and its
mighty hard to get that loose. The.
photograph shows a stack that can be
pitched dewn from the very top with no
use for a crowbar or pick- -ax to get the
top loose.
To make.a stack that will shed water;
the start must be made at the bottom
when we build it. A rather small bot-
tom for a stack that will stand in the
open without stock around it is desir-
able, but if the stack is placed in a
barnyard (and most ef them are placed
there) the bottom should. be fairly large
because with cows taking a scurry
round the bottom of it when the stack
is just finished, and with cattle nibbling
at it all winter long, | a high stack on a:
small foundation is going to get rather
shaky before spring Comes, and it may
tip over and bury some stock.
When you are in the straw at the.
bottom of the stack, the separator hum-
ming and the dust and straw and roa?
coming from the end ef the blower ovey
your head, theres a temptation to get
out of the dirt-to go and linger on the
| grain- -wagons:; but to get a good stack
you. must start right in at the bottom
to build it. If the straw is allowed -to
pile uppyramid fashion, it is hard te
get the corners of the stack to hold
when you do straighten it out. Build
the edge next the separator at least.
twelve feet: away from Be,
Tr: amp the Cane
_ And as you feel the, straw pile grow-!
ing higher beneath you, you are -liable
to be starting the stack. with the caved-:
jin top unless you keep sharp watch, It:
is not very easy to walk in. the loose
straw, and consequently you find your-
self going from one end of the stack to
the other in one path, pushing the
straw out to the edge as you go. AS)
our stack is wide at the bottom, this
going around the outside of the stack
Jmakes a place. down through the cen-
[ter where we are apt not to walk at
all. That is just where we commit the
blunder. \
Straw that is not tramped settles
more than that Which * is tramped, some
thing to keep constantly in mind. Ag >
a general thing the outside of a straw 4
stack. settles down well enough for the |
simple reason that we do not dare go
too close to the edge or the side will
push out. The center may appear just)
as high as the balance of the stack, but.
if We neglect to walk up and down it as'
much as we do around. nearer the edge,
a is going to settle in time.
- When you get near the top, fill in the
center just as much as you can, for a
stack center never can get too much.
25% there is a. high wind blowing, it is.
impossible to put on a very sharp top
\to the stack. The best that you can do.
{then is to tramp; when he get tired of
going to one end of the stack, go to the |'
other, for to pack the straw is the only
way to hold it up on the top at all.
On farms where small threshers are
used, and the stray is" to be sold, the
straw can be baled right at the thresh-

quired time, remove
| open jar,

can ee wate ae proud feeling of work ee
well done.
Now for the essential points. The
first thing we need is a square. fruit
far, and then to fill that: jar we must,
have a Jarge supply of tender green
beans free from all blemish and dis-
figurement. I prefer the pinto beans
when they are young and very tender.
No, overgrown or overripe product
makes good ~ canning material. The :
pintos are straight and flat-sided when
in. the correct stage for canning.
The beans must be gathered in the
morning when fresh and crisp. Next
they are to be stripped by breaking the
tips off and pulling backward. Of
course they are then washed thorough-
ly and dropped into a clean gauze sack.
Then plunge them = in boiling water
and blanch seven minutes. Raise the -
sack up and Yet drip a few seconds and
then plunge into cold water for three
minutes. They are then ready to pack.
They are prettiest packed log-cabin
style. Cut a pattern that will exactly
fit'the size of jar. Lay the beans side
tby side until-bottom of jar is covered.
One has to cut only those beans which |
it takes to Gover the bottom, top and ~
sides of jar. The intside beans are just
snapped.
After the bottom of jar is covered
with a layer of beans, drop 4 handful of
snaps on top of them so they will not
fall out of position. Now take your.
pattern beans and begin to place around
edge of jar, xactly like a log cabin, fit-
ting the. corners of beans at the corners
of the jars. . Your jar, of course, ~has
been thoroughly cleaned and sterilized,
and if one holds it over steam for'a few:
seconds before starting the packing, it
is a greatshelp. Holdthe mouth of the
jar over the steam until it has been
steamed inside about five or six see-
onds. This causes the beans to aa-
here to the sides of the jar.
Continue the packing of the jar by
| placing pattern beans around the edge,
always keeping the inside filler a little
above the outside beans to hold your
placed beans in position. Pack a full
jar'in this way and cover to top of the
jar with a layer of beans.as you do the
| bottom. The jar of beans should stil
be moderately hot, so cover your beans
with as hot water as will not break the
jar. Place-jar in a kettle of hot water
having the water
the top of the jar an inch. Al-
and
top adjusted to a half-seal. Bring the
water to a boil anq boil three hours,
counting from the time the water starts
Cleanliness .and sterilization
are absolutely necessary. After. the .
beans have boiled-or sterilized the re-
from the kettle,
remove air bubbles carefully
so as not to ruin the pack, and- add 1
over
teaspoonful of salt and 2 tablespoontuls
of white vinegar. This positively does
not harm-the flavor of the beans, and it
is needed to help preserve them. Seal
the jar immediately and put in a cool
dark place until an opportunity comes.
to exhibit the jar.
