Crop F orecast---Sweet Potatoes
: After ae years of hich prices ue to light production caused by low yields farm-
ers: in all the important sweet potato States are now planning to increase the ac-
_reage of sweet potatoes from 10% to 80%. For the country as a whole the reports
- Indicate an intended increase of aane 20%. The acreage that actually will be
planted may fall somewhat below this figure, if weather conditions at planting time
are not favorable. However, if present intentions are carried-out and average yield
- of 95 bushels is secured, production will be increased about 41% over 1925 and 61%
over 1924, Itis highly improbable that such a crop could be marketed at satisfac-
tory prices. Thisseems especially true inthe important commercial States of New
_ Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, where growers seem unduly confident
and are now planning an acreage 225. over 1925. and 33% over 1924. An average
yield on the proposed acreage would result in an inerease in production in these
States of about one-third over last year. oh arieet News Service, Uz 8. Department
of Agriculture, March 28,1926). | Sas Se See
This information should be Kets Soneiend. An OV er-production would be
unfortunate. ea es
