Agriculture Department Announces Annual Contest

March 22 is designated as Agriculture Day in Georgia for 2000. To highlight the vital contributions farmers and agribusinesses make to our state and nation, the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Agriculture in the Classroom Council Inc. are sponsoring an essay and photo/art contest for Georgia students. The theme for this year's contest is: "My Vision of Agriculture in the Millennium and Beyond."
The contest has two primary categories - written and visual art. The written category is open to students in grades 4-8 and 9-12, while the visual art category is open to all age groups and includes both photos and artwork.
first, second and third place winners in all three categories will be awarded $100, $50 and $25 cash prizes, respectively. Honorable mentions also will be named.

All winners, honorable mentions and their guests will be invited to Atlanta for a special awards presentation by Commissioner Tommy Irvin.
Agriculture Day 2000 Official Contest Rules Theme: My Vision of Agriculture in the Millennium and Beyond. My son talked me into buying a live Christmas tree with a balled root and it seemed like a good idea at the time. What do I do with it after the holidays?
Plant it. But don't take off the decorations and just stick the tree in the ground. .Your tree must be acclimated. Store it in an unheated shelter. You will need to dig a hole at least twice the width of the root ball and half again as deep. Don't plant the tree too deep. Water and mulch the tree to prevent water loss. Don't fertilize it until the end of the first growing season. If you have questions about the survival of your live Christmas tree or need tips on selecting a good site for the tree, contact your local county extension agent.

million trees and provided one million

tree seedlings to participants during its

previous eight years. The program also

assists local governments with

compliance of the yard waste ban

implemented in September 1996. The

regulation prohibits the disposal of yard

waste in landfills. Last year, 327 ,578

trees were collected statewide.

"This event diverts more than 300 ,000

Christmas trees annually from landfills

throughout the state and reinforces the

steps we need to take to keep all yard

waste from being disposed in landfills

and taking up valuable space," said

Heather Hardy Leo, coordinator of the

statewide event. "It also allows

communities to spread the word about

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Brenda Donnell at 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current germination report (not more than 9 months old) for each type seed advertised. Reports will be returned upon request. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9134, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Doles 6738, 6847 and Haskell may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division, (404) 656-3635.
