Agriculture Day 2000 Official Contest Rules Theme: My Vision of Agriculture in the Millennium and Beyond. Students are asked to submit an essay of 250-500 words or a drawing describing how they visualize agriculture production, food processing or farming in the millennium and beyond. As part of a statewide effort to reuse Christmas trees, Keep Georgia Beautiful is coordinating more than 430 sites throughout Georgia where residents can drop off their trees on Saturday, Jan. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The trees will be chipped into mulch or used as wildlife and fish habitats. a In appreciation for their recycling efforts, participants will receive free tree seedling while supplies last. Local drop-off site information is available on the "Bring One for the Chipper" web site at www.KeepGeorgiaBeautiful.org or the 1- 800-CLEANUP information line. Metro Atlanta residents may call (404) 651- 7263 for drop-off locations in their area. All site information will be available starting Dec. 8. 2000 will be the ninth anniversary of ag consumer line My son talked me into buying a live Christmas tree with a balled root and it seemed like a good idea at the time. What do I do with it after the holidays? Plant it. But don't take off the decorations and just stick the tree in the ground. .Your tree must be acclimated. Store it in an unheated shelter. You will need to dig a hole at least twice the width of the root ball and half again as deep. Don't plant the tree too deep. Water and mulch the tree to prevent water loss. Don't fertilize it until the end of the first growing season. If you have questions about the survival of your live Christmas tree or need tips on selecting a good site for the tree, contact your local county extension agent. **** Is there a law that requires stores to offer refunds on Christmas gifts? Georgia does not require stores to accept returned items, even Christmas gifts. (Continued on Page 7) this program, which has collected 2.4 million trees and provided one million tree seedlings to participants during its previous eight years. The program also assists local governments with compliance of the yard waste ban implemented in September 1996. The regulation prohibits the disposal of yard waste in landfills. Last year, 327 ,578 trees were collected statewide. "This event diverts more than 300 ,000 Christmas trees annually from landfills throughout the state and reinforces the steps we need to take to keep all yard waste from being disposed in landfills and taking up valuable space," said Heather Hardy Leo, coordinator of the statewide event. "It also allows communities to spread the word about recycling and environmental conservation." For more information, call (404) 679- 1598.
