Georgia Agents Receive Awards
The Georgia Association of County Agricultural Agents (GACAA) was organized on January 24, 1930. Our present membership of 445, makes us the largest chapter of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. (Texas ranks second with 357 members.)
The purpose of GACAA is the development of professional improvement programs for present and prospective agricultural extension workers. In addition, our group promotes professionalism among it's members, and encourages education in the field of agriculture and the betterment of Georgia life through agriculture.
Our guest columnist this week is Willis A. Godowns, President of the Georgia Association of County Agriculture Agents, P.O. Box 100, Greenville 30222.
In August, 31 GACAA members attended the annual meeting of NACAA in Fargo, North Dakota and had the opportunity to participate in a number of "Search for Professional Excellence" programs, along with many educational tours. During the awards banquet, nine Georgia members received the Distinguished Service Award, the highest award given by NACAA.
Those receiving this award were Dr. R. Edward Brown Jr., Athens; James D. Fountain, Statesboro; Roy D. Goodson, Lee County; Dr. Robert Isaac, Athens; Kenneth McClure, Polk County; Stewart Newberry, Macon County; Larry Pierce, Madison County; Dr. Charles Swann, Tifton; and James Williams, Troup County. This award is given to agents with more than 10 years of service and GACAA is proud of the job these individuals are doing. David Mills of Houston County received the Achievement Award, presented to agents with less than 10 years of service.
Georgia agents are one of the largest contributors to the NACAA National Scholarship Program. At the national meeting it was announced that four Georgia agents had been selected as scholarship recipients for 1987. They are Jimmy Howell, Marion County; Micky Cummings, Dade County; Arch Smith, Carroll County; and Mark Eason, Athens.

Dry Fall Weather Impacts Ga. Crops
............................iiiiiiiiiiiiii
While continued dry weather has allowed Georgia's farmers to make rapid progress with crop harvests, conditions have worsened the quality of pasture for grazing and restricted planting of small grains. The situation has forced some cattle farmers to begin supplemental feeding of hay.
The Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service reported October 25 that soil moisture levels had reached the lowest point of the year, with the state rated 87 percent very short, 12 percent short and one percent adequate.
A few areas received some rain early last week, but all of Georgia north of the fall line remains in a state of "agricultural drought," according to the National Weather Service in Atlanta. As a result of the dry conditions in the northern mountains and Piedmont region, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has initiated conservation measures at area reservoirs.
Although the dry conditions have presented problems for the state's farmers, the weather has not been as severe as last year's drought.

This year farmers received rains early in the year which improved soil moisture going into the growing season and temperatures remained moderate throughout the summer. Last year, heat stress compounded problems brought on by dry soils.

What is the best way to freeze bell peppers? Discard the seeds, white membrane and stems. Chop the peppers and place in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Freeze quickly, then place the frozen pieces in freezer bags. Seal the bags, label and date. When you need bell peppers, simply shake out what you need without thawing the rest. Bell peppers will keep about six months at zero degrees F., but the quality is much better if used within three months.

I would like to sell sandwiches in my convenience store. My wife will prepare them in the kitchen in back of the store. Are there any special label requirements?
Yes. You must have the label approved by our Department before you can sell the sandwiches. Proper labels include the common name of the product, list of ingredients in order of predominance, date, and name and address of the manufacturer. Your facility must also be approved for this type of food preparation.

I have three Japanese persimmon trees that are large and bear fruit every year. Most of the fruit falls off when it is still small, but what remains on the tree is large and very good. Can you suggest anything to prevent the fruit from falling off?
According to our plant specialist, your persimmon trees should be fertilized twice a year with a product high in potassium (5-10-15). The best time to apply the fertilizer is in April and June. The trees will still lose some fruit prematurely, because they can only hold a part of the crop to full ripeness.

Cure Pumpkin Harvest Before Winter Storage
Both pumpkins and winter squash are native American vegetables. While they have been grown in vegetable patches for decades, many gardeners remain unsure of the proper time to harvest the hardshelled cucurbits.
Unlike their summer squash cousins, you must wait until squash (butternut, acorn, Hubbard, banana, etc.) and pumpkins are completely mature to harvest them. But once fully developed, these vegetables can be enjoyed throughout the winter months under proper storage conditions.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, November 4, 1987
Dear Editor:
I want to thank you for making my 76-year-old mother very happy last Christmas. By putting her name on the Market Bulletin's Special People list, she received over 50 cards which we taped on her wall around her bed in the nursing home. She enjoyed them so much and was afraid that just one of them might get lost. I just hope that all who had names on the list were as happy as she
was. Those of us who are healthy and not a shut in or in a
nursing home, often don't stop and think how much a kind word or card means to those who are in that situation. Thank you so much and for letting me take
time to say what was on my heart. Melba Leverett Route 3, Box 52 Tifton, Georgia 31794
Remember Special People
The letter featured above is just a sample of those we received in our office after including the 1986 Special People List in the Market Bulletin. Because of the happiness this list brought to both the "senders" and "receivers," the Market Bulletin will again publish requests from our elderly and shut in readers.
If you would like to be included on this list, please send your name and complete address to the Market Bulletin office no later than November 18. Due to space limitations, you may submit only your own name or the name of one special person. In addition, only Georgia residents can be included on the list and only one list will be published.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

ATTENTION EQUINE ADVERTISERS
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Each horse must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the "At Stud" category of the special equine editions.
In addition, all horse farmers must have had animals in their possession 60 days or more before offering them for sale through this publication.

Dear Editor:
I have some special watermelon seeds which haven't been available for years (the last time I remember was when Grandpa grew them in 1950). The variety is known as "Moon and Stars." It grows on a huge vine which produces leaves and fruit with many bright yellow spots. The fruit is approximately 25-40 pounds with one large spot (the moon) and many small spots (the stars). It has very sweet red flesh with dark green skin. It needs plenty of room to run (my vines were 15-20 feet long). I hope others will join me in helping to preserve these old timey seed varieties.

Agricultural seed and plants for sale
// you have questions regarding this category, call Ella Beach 656-3727.
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. First ad must be accompanied by report which will be returned if requested.
Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. Save empty foil or waxed paper boxes to use for dispensing rolls of shelf paper the same width. Pull shelf paper out to the desired length and use the cutting edge on the box to tear the paper evenly.
Make your own ceramic tile cleaner by mixing one fourth cup of baking soda, one half cup of white vinegar and one cup of household ammonia in a bucket. Add one gallon of warm water, stirring until the baking soda dissolves. Wear rubber gloves and apply the mixture with a brush or sponge, then rinse.
Use buttermilk and a pinch of baking soda, instead of whole milk, to make your homemade waffles soft and light.
The Garden
I've put the dishes in the drain to dry Let's walk down to the garden you and I A kitchen garden's not a sometime thing "Bear by the tail" you've got from early spring.
When those first seedlings sprout they look so small and helpless sort of, but just look how tall they've grown and what a crop we had. Too much for just us two, I've been so glad.
There's been more than enough for us to share, But we sure had to work I do declare. Those pesky bugs we'd pick them off and spray, And weeds, my Lands! A new crop every day.
And then that long dry spell, the sun so hot, The soil seemed like 'twas brick I've not forgot. How just in time the Good Lord sent the rain, It shames me now to think that I'd complain.
But just look here, now did you ever see A finer ear of corn? This one will be our seed corn, but I think we'd better go That breeze is nippy. Summer's gone you know.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, November 4, 1987
Grandpa's Garden
Mr. Ralston's "apple picker," featured in an earlier edition of the Market Bulletin, promoted several of our readers to share their sugges tions for harvesting fruits and nuts.
"I am 68 years old and as a child, I used a can with a "v" cut on the outer edge to pick figs," explained Peggie Tucker of Eatonton. "You just slip the "v" cut in the can under the fig, push gently and the fig falls off. My grandmother had quite a few fig bushes and I gath ered them for her to make fig preserves."
"It will soon be pecan picking-up time, so I wanted to share my homemade device with your read ers," noted Mildred York of Ocilla. "I get a stick (like one farmers used to string tobacco on) or a piece of bamboo and attach the bottom of a fruit juice or soft drink can length wise to one end. The other end of the can should be left open. Make the stick the length you need it to reach the ground," Ms. York ex plained. "Wear an apron with two or three large pockets and simply scoop up the pecans. After removing trash or hulls, put them in your pocket. This works great for reach ing nuts in the grass or bushes."
Many plants that grow outdoors during summer are not winter hardy and must be brought in once cold weather arrives. When potting these plants, line the containers with plastic, leaving excess hanging over the edge. Punch a few drainage holes in the bottom before adding soil and the plant. Come spring, simply lift the soil and the plant out of the pot by the plastic for trans planting.
Like other greens you can begin harvesting collards as soon as there are enough leaves to make a meal. Keep in mind that if you only harvest the bottom leaves of the plant, the center bud will continue putting out more branches.
Cure Pumpkin Harvest
(Continued from page 1)
The best way to determine when your squash or pumpkins are ready to harvest is the "tried and true" thumbnail test. If your thumbnail cannot penetrate the vegetable's skin, it is ready to gather. Deepen ing skin color and a stem that has turned a light yellowish green also are signs of ripeness.
Whenever you store pumpkins and squash, check regularly and
remove any that may be getting soft or starting to rot. In a favorable environment, most will keep for up to five months.
To harvest the fruit, cut from the vine with a sharp clean knife. Be sure to leave three to four inches of stem. Avoid handling the vegeta bles you intend to store since bruis ing can cause fruit to rot.
Winter squash and pumpkins should be cured before storing. Ide ally they should be placed in a warm ventilated place at a tempera ture of 75-85 degrees for a week or two weather permitting. You can also cure them on a sunny back porch for a couple of weeks until the stems shrivel and turn gray.
Folks used to store their pumpkin and squash harvest under their beds. But unless your bedroom is unheated and your bed high enough, this is no longer practical. Select a cool dark place, such as a root cellar, closet or basement.
Soil Improvement Focus of Seminar

Agents
(Continued from page 1)
On the local level, our group sponsors 4-H educational programs along with a $500 scholarship each year for a 4-H member to further his or her education in the field of agriculture.
As members of GACAA, agents can participate in a number of pro fessional programs ranging from marketing seminars to environmen tal protection and safe use of pesti cides. I am proud of opportunities such as this available to members and appreciate the honor of serving as president for 1987.
Georgia Agrirama Hosts Cane Grinding Parties
Years ago, old timey "candy snatchings" often followed sugar cane boilings in the fall. The Geor gia Agrirama, the state's official agricultural museum, will host a series of Cane Grinding Parties to give folks the opportunity to once again make this old fashioned syrup
candy. The Cane Grinding Parties are
scheduled at 7 p.m. November 14, 21 and 28 at the agricultural heri tage center in Tifton. Other activi ties will include wagon rides, story telling and popping corn over an
open fire. At the candy snatching, visitors
will be able to wash their hands
with old fashioned lye soap, rinse them in well water and grease their hands with freshly churned butter in preparation for making the syrup
confection. The trick, experienced candy
pullers say, is to pull the warm substance quickly into long, slender pieces, watching the color change from light brown to spun gold. As it cools and firms up, the candy is ready to eat.
Admission to the Georgia Agrir ama is $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 6-16. The museum is located at Interstate 75 and Eighth Street in Tifton. For additional in formation call 912-386-3344.

(Continued from page 1) How can I get rid of the crickets that are coming into my house? Our entomologist recommends that you apply Diazinon granules in a band eight to 10 feet wide around the outside of the house. This will kill the insects before they get in side. Do not put granules on paved areas, just places with grass and soil. For control inside the house, he recommends a household ant and roach spray. As with all pesticides, read and follow label directions carefully.
***** There is a little grocery store near my house that doesn't give customers a receipt when they make a purchase. I thought stores were required to give receipts. Stores are only required to give receipts with charge card or other credit purchases. In most instances, this service is provided by the stores as a courtesy to customers and is helpful to them in checking their purchases.
DeKalb 4-H Offers Seedlings for Sale
The DeKalb Extension Service is taking orders for the annual 4-H and Youth plant sale. Residents who wish to improve their yard can add native tree seedlings, flowering crape myrtle and blueberries for a nominal cost.
The following species will be available: loblolly pine, Virginia pine, white pine, sawtooth oak and white dogwood - 40 each; red bud, sourwood and sugar maple - $1 each; pink or white crepe myrtle in one gallon cans, $5 each; and qual ity blueberry varieties in three gal lon cans - $7 each.
Orders may be placed by calling 371-2821, 457-8575, or 241-7444 through November. Dates are tenta tively set for early February 1988 to pick up plants at a central DeKalb location.
L.A. Phillips of Smyrna shows off some of his Irish potatoes (Va riety 97) which he and his nephew cultivate in Walter County Ala bama, exclusively for making po tato chips. The potatoes shown here averaged three to four pounds each.
