FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 74, No. 44 Georgia Agents Receive Awards The Georgia Association of County Agricultural Agents (GACAA) was organized on January 24, 1930. Our present membership of 445, makes us the largest chapter of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. (Texas ranks second with 357 members.) The purpose of GACAA is the development of professional improvement programs for present and prospective agricultural extension workers. In addition, our group promotes professionalism among it's members, and encourages education in the field of agriculture and the betterment of Georgia life through agriculture. Our guest columnist this week is Willis A. Godowns, President of the Georgia Association of County Agriculture Agents, P.O. Box 100, Greenville 30222. In August, 31 GACAA members attended the annual meeting of NACAA in Fargo, North Dakota and had the opportunity to participate in a number of "Search for Professional Excellence" programs, along with many educational tours. During the awards banquet, nine Georgia members received the Distinguished Service Award, the highest award given by NACAA. Those receiving this award were Dr. R. Edward Brown Jr., Athens; James D. Fountain, Statesboro; Roy D. Goodson, Lee County; Dr. Robert Isaac, Athens; Kenneth McClure, Polk County; Stewart Newberry, Macon County; Larry Pierce, Madison County; Dr. Charles Swann, Tifton; and James Williams, Troup County. This award is given to agents with more than 10 years of service and GACAA is proud of the job these individuals are doing. David Mills of Houston County received the Achievement Award, presented to agents with less than 10 years of service. Georgia agents are one of the largest contributors to the NACAA National Scholarship Program. At the national meeting it was announced that four Georgia agents had been selected as scholarship recipients for 1987. They are Jimmy Howell, Marion County; Micky Cummings, Dade County; Arch Smith, Carroll County; and Mark Eason, Athens. (Continued on page 12) Wednesday, November 4, 1987 Dry Fall Weather Impacts Ga. Crops ............................iiiiiiiiiiiiii While continued dry weather has allowed Georgia's farmers to make rapid progress with crop harvests, conditions have worsened the quality of pasture for grazing and restricted planting of small grains. The situation has forced some cattle farmers to begin supplemental feeding of hay. The Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service reported October 25 that soil moisture levels had reached the lowest point of the year, with the state rated 87 percent very short, 12 percent short and one percent adequate. A few areas received some rain early last week, but all of Georgia north of the fall line remains in a state of "agricultural drought," according to the National Weather Service in Atlanta. As a result of the dry conditions in the northern mountains and Piedmont region, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has initiated conservation measures at area reservoirs. Although the dry conditions have presented problems for the state's farmers, the weather has not been as severe as last year's drought. ag consumer line... This year farmers received rains early in the year which improved soil moisture going into the growing season and temperatures remained moderate throughout the summer. Last year, heat stress compounded problems brought on by dry soils. AI Training Class Offered At ABAC Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), in cooperation with American Breeders Service, is hosting a four-day training school on artificial insemination of cattle. Chop the peppers and place in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Freeze quickly, then place the frozen pieces in freezer bags. Seal the bags, label and date. When you need bell peppers, simply shake out what you need without thawing the rest. Bell peppers will keep about six months at zero degrees F., but the quality is much better if used within three months. ***** I would like to sell sandwiches in my convenience store. My wife will prepare them in the kitchen in back of the store. Are there any special label requirements? Yes. You must have the label approved by our Department before you can sell the sandwiches. Proper labels include the common name of the product, list of ingredients in order of predominance, date, and name and address of the manufacturer. Your facility must also be approved for this type of food preparation. ***** I have three Japanese persimmon trees that are large and bear fruit every year. Most of the fruit falls off when it is still small, but what remains on the tree is large and very good. Can you suggest anything to prevent the fruit from falling off? According to our plant specialist, your persimmon trees should be fertilized twice a year with a product high in potassium (5-10-15). The best time to apply the fertilizer is in April and June. The trees will still lose some fruit prematurely, because they can only hold a part of the crop to full ripeness. Cure Pumpkin Harvest Before Winter Storage Both pumpkins and winter squash are native American vegetables. While they have been grown in vegetable patches for decades, many gardeners remain unsure of the proper time to harvest the hardshelled cucurbits. Unlike their summer squash cousins, you must wait until squash (butternut, acorn, Hubbard, banana, etc.) and pumpkins are completely mature to harvest them. But once fully developed, these vegetables can be enjoyed throughout the winter months under proper storage conditions. (Continued on page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, November 4, 1987 Dear Editor: I want to thank you for making my 76-year-old mother very happy last Christmas. By putting her name on the Market Bulletin's Special People list, she received over 50 cards which we taped on her wall around her bed in the nursing home. She enjoyed them so much and was afraid that just one of them might get lost. I just hope that all who had names on the list were as happy as she was. Those of us who are healthy and not a shut in or in a nursing home, often don't stop and think how much a kind word or card means to those who are in that situation. Thank you so much and for letting me take time to say what was on my heart. Melba Leverett Route 3, Box 52 Tifton, Georgia 31794 Remember Special People The letter featured above is just a sample of those we received in our office after including the 1986 Special People List in the Market Bulletin. Because of the happiness this list brought to both the "senders" and "receivers," the Market Bulletin will again publish requests from our elderly and shut in readers. If you would like to be included on this list, please send your name and complete address to the Market Bulletin office no later than November 18. Due to space limitations, you may submit only your own name or the name of one special person. In addition, only Georgia residents can be included on the list and only one list will be published.
