Ga. Agribusiness Merits Recognition
Sometimes it seems like we celebrate something almost every day in our society. For example, Secre> taries Day, Bosses Day, Education Day, etc. Such observances bring
attention to a profession, career or product and I usually create a (bit of excitement. I sometimes wonder how'such celebrations get started.
We should des\ ignate November 21 as "Agribusiness Day" in Geogia. Not only is agribusiness our state's largest industry, but we have some exciting things scheduled on this particular day at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Atlanta.
Our guest columnist this week is Ken Williamson, President, Georgia Agribusiness Council, P. O. Box 266, Cedartown, Georgia 30125._________________
The celebration begins with an Agribusiness luncheon. Congressman Kika de la Garza, chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee, will be the featured luncheon speaker focusing his comments on international marketing.
Following lunch, we continue our seminar on International Trade and Policy. Dr. Leo Mayer of the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service will keynote and lead a panel discussion, highlighting the need to recapture our international markets of agribusiness products. Dr. Tal DuVall, director of the Georgia Extension Service, will summarize and suggest where we go from here.
The annual "Silent Auction" reception and Harvest Ball, sponsored by the Georgia Agribusiness Council, will be held Friday evening. During the program, the five finalist counties of this year's Georgia Agribusiness Development and Leadership Recognition Program will be honored. They are Ben Hill, Cobb, Oconee, Screven and Upson all competing for the coveted state award which will be announced later that evening.
Approximately 1,000 agribusiness leaders from across Georgia will participate in the November 21 activities all being held to bring attention to agribusiness. Gover-

Georgia Cotton Growers Approve Boll Weevil Eradication Program

Georgia cotton growers voting in a referendum have overwhelmingly approved a boll weevil eradication program, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently announced.
"I am extremely gratified our cotton growers have given such a strong show of support to this referendum," Irvin said. "Since cotton is able to withstand dry weather better than most crops, I believe with eradication of the boll weevil it will again play a significant role in the crop scheme of Georgia farmers."
Of the 2,220 eligible cotton growers, 1,520, or 68.5 percent voted. Of those voting, 88.6 percent voted in favor of the program. To pass, a minimum of 50 percent of the growers had to vote, with 66.7 percent of that number voting in favor.
The eradication program will be completed in four years. During the first year, farmers will pay $10 per acre of cotton. In the second and third years they will pay $35 per acre and in the fourth year, $25 per acre. The cost will not exceed $10 per acre annual assessment for each year after the fourth year as long as a containment program is necessary. Growers will have to spray for
Boll Weevil Continued Problem For Georgia's Cotton Farmers

Last year he made a bumper crop, Paid every man his due, But the weevil's snout has clean
him out. Ate crop and credit too.
From The Story of King Cotton
When Sherman marched through Georgia in 1864, he left much of the state's cotton lands in ruins. In the early twentieth century, another enemy marched into Georgia and laid cotton fields to waste. But while Sherman has been long gone, the boll weevil has continued plaguing the state's cotton crop.
The boll weevil first entered the United States when it crossed the Mexican border into Texas in the early 1890s. Once in the state, the weevil rapidly multiplied and quickly traveled throughout the South. As the "winged demon" made its way across Louisiana in 1906, concerned Georgia entomolo-

gists traveled to Texas to study the insect firsthand. Meanwhile, the weevil continued its trek and reached Alabama by 1911. Although farmers were urged by state officials to plant other crops, few growers listened.
By the end of 1913, the pest was within 30 miles of Georgia. But severe weather had reduced weevil populations and many farmers remained unconcerned. Officially spotted in Thomasville, Georgia, on August 25, 1915, the weevil arrived in small numbers and initially caused minimal damage.
But by 1919, the weevil population had recovered from its earlier setback and most farmers were not prepared for the onslaught that followed. Damage became extensive, with the state's crop plunging 30 to 40 percent below normal between 1921 and 1923.
Losses to the state's cotton farmers were enormous. For instance, in

the boll weevil during the first year only. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will pay additional expenses of the program, making up approximately 30 percent of the total cost.
The program, which will be under the regulatory authority of the Commissioner, will be carried out by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the USDA in cooperation with the Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation of Georgia.
Since the boll weevil's initial in vasion of Georgia in 1915, cotton farmers have continued battling this devastating pest. But with the approval of the boll weevil eradica tion program, funds finally will be made available for effective con trol.
Winner Announced In Statement Contest
Bernese Cagle of Canton has been selected the winner of the Georgia Agribusiness Council's Fourth Annual Statement Contest.
To win the contest Ms. Cagle was required to express in 25 words or less "Why agribusiness is vital to Georgia's economy." She submitted the following winning entry:
Strong agriculture is the base of our nation's economy. Agribusiness provides the supply to agriculture and the market for agriculture. Strong agribusiness guarantees Georgia's economy.
Ms. Cagle was awarded two complimentary tickets to the Agribusiness Council's annual Harvest Ball planned for November 21 at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta. In addition she will receive complimentary lodging for two at the Marriott Marquis and breakfast on Saturday morning.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Agribusiness Council expresses appreciation to those individuals who took the time to participate in the statement contest. For additional information about agribusiness in Georgia or the Harvest Ball, contact the Agribusiness Council at 656-3698.

Dear Editor: I recently visited in the home of a lady who was
included on your Christmas 1985 "Remember Special People" list. She still had the cards Market Bulletin folks had sent to her last December hanging on the wall. She pointed them out and wanted me to touch and enjoy the beauty of each card.
The kindness shown by a few people last year still lingers and touches her heart each day. Thanks to those who sent cards.
M. Brown Route 2 Trion, Georgia 30753
Remember Special People
As we have done during past holiday seasons, the Market Bulletin will again publish requests for friendship cards and letters from our elderly, shut-in readers. The letter featured above only serves to emphasize the happiness this correspondence has brought to these special folks in years past.
If you would like to be included on this list, please send your name and complete address to the Market Bulletin office no later than November 28. Due to space limitations you may submit only your own name or the name of one special person. In addition, only Georgia residents can be included on the list and only one list will be published.

Georgia Cooking

BLACKENED FISH FILLETS
1 tablespoon paprika 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 4 teaspoons white pepper 4 teaspoons black pepper 2 teaspoons thyme 2 teaspoons oregano 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted g 6 (8-10 ounces each) fish fillets*
In a shallow dish, combine spices, heat a large cast-iron skillet over high heat for 10 minutes (until it is beyond the smoking stage and you see white ash in the skillet bottom). Dip each fillet in melted butter, then coat both sides with seasoning mixture. Place fillets in hot skillet and pour 1 teaspoon melted butter on top of each fillet (be careful, as butter may flame up). Cook over high heat until underside looks charred, about 2 minutes. Turn fish over and pour 1 teaspoon melted butter on top; cook until done (about 2
more minutes). *Red fish, pompano, red snapper or grouper are recommended.
NOTE: Cook outdoors on a gas grill if you're worried about your smoke alarm going off. Rorie Higgins Atlanta, Georgia

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Increase Small Grain Yields (Continued from Page 12)

spring, root growth already has been reduced. Hargrove noted that the combined effects of deep-till are better soil aeration (more oxygen to plant roots) and warmer soil tem perature due to buried plant resi dues. The residues also help reduce disease problems. According to Har grove, test results show all of the deep-tillage methods are about equal in performance. Lee added that growers can expect an average of three to nine bushels difference in yield between deep-till and har rowing.
* increasing seeding to a rate of two or two and one-half bushels per acre
Although some farmers may be tempted to reduce seeding rates to lower costs, such action could lead to delayed grain maturity and in creased weed competition.
* using certified seed of a recommended variety
Purchasing certified seed will help insure that seed are clean, treated, high-germinating and rela tively weed free.
* applying 30-40 units of nitrogen in the fall and adding additional nitrogen in late winter or early

Adequate nitrogen is needed for high yields, but excessive amounts can cause rank growth and lodging of grain before harvest. The normal rate is a total of 80-100 pounds per acre. But to increase grain yield, combined spring and fall applica tions should be increased to 120 pounds per acre. If the grain is planted following a legume, such as soybeans, the rate can be reduced. Consult an Extension specialist for recommendations.
Lee pointed out that all the avail able small grain varieties in Geor gia have the potential for high yields if all practices in an intensive management program are followed. "In order to be effective, these man agement practices should be used as a total package," he noted. "If the grower doesn't follow the whole program, he won't extract the full genetic potential that is there."
A list of Cut-Your-Own Christmas tree farms will be published in the Market Bulletin Nov. 19.

spring.

Boll Weevil
(Continued from Page 1) 1911, farmers had an average yield of 267 pounds of lint per acre with a total production of 2,769,000 bales. But by 1921, yield had dropped to 108 pounds per acre with a total production of only 787,000 bales. That year Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture J.J. Brown stated that in the 35 years he had been in close touch with agricultural conditions, he had never seen farmers "so de pressed and in such an alarming financial condition." Although damage peaked in 1924, the weevil has remained. While its destruction was devastating to Georgia's farmers, it did finally lead to more diversification of crops in the state and the end of a onecrop economy.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, November 12, 1986

For those unfamiliar with the pest, the boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) is a hard-shelled beetle, about one-quarter inch long, which feeds on cotton plants. Its snout, which the insect uses to feed, comprises almost one-half of the insect's total length. Color varies from dark brownish-red in young adults to brown or near-black in older adults.
Adult weevils hibernate during winter in well drained areas in or adjacent to cotton fields. The adults emerge from hibernation and enter cotton fields from March until July. Late May is the peak emergence period in Georgia.
Females begin laying eggs in the plant buds when cotton squares (buds) are about one-third grown. Although mating occurs in the spring, some overwintered females remain fertile from matings the previous fall.
The female weevils chew a hole in a square, deposit an egg (usually one per boll) and seal the hole. Later in the season, as squares become fewer in number, eggs are laid in the bolls.
In three to five days, the eggs hatch into wormlike grubs which begin feeding inside the squares. This causes the plants to abort the squares and they fall to the ground. The larvae continue feeding inside the squares and in two and a half to three weeks they reach adulthood.
The new adults chew their way out of the squares and move up the cotton plants to feed on other squares and to mate. In only four to five days, females begin laying eggs and the cycle is repeated. The entire life cycle requires about three weeks during the summer. An adult female can lay about 200 eggs within a 10 to 12 day period. As many as eight to ten generations can be produced in a single season.
Beginning in late August and continuing until frost, an increasing percentage of the weevil population goes into diapause. This is a physiological state that prepares the insect for hibernation. In order to reach diapause, weevils must feed on cotton for 10 to 20 days, depending on the temperature.
Migrations of the weevil begin in late July with most long range movement occurring late in the season during August and September. In the spring, the insects normally make short flights to nearby fields, usually moving less than a mile. However, the weevil is capable of migrating much longer distances. According to Georgia Extension Service, the longest flight on record is 25 miles.

Utilize Intensive Management To Increase Small Grain Yields

Whether produced as feed grain, cash or forage crops, or as a cover crop in a soil conservation system, small grains play a significant role in Georgia agriculture.
Each type of small grain (wheat, oats, barley or rye), can be planted throughout the state as a single or double crop. Triticale also can be planted in the Coastal Plain region, but it has not been successful in other parts of Georgia. The import ance of these grains to an individ ual farmer depends on his or her need and location.
Although all the previously men tioned grains can be planted in Georgia, there are characteristics which may make them more desira ble in certain areas. For instance, environmental factors limit the pro duction of some wheat varieties in the lower Coastal Plain. Oats are more adaptable to central and south Georgia with winter hardiness being the main limiting factor.
Barley is susceptible to several foliar diseases and, due to its toler ance of cold weather, is best suited for north Georgia. There the cli mate makes it less susceptible to disease. Rye is well-suited through out the state and is more attractive for grazing than other small grains because of its ability to grow in mid winter.
Farmers can improve small grain yields by putting together a more intensive management package, said Dewey Lee, Georgia Extension seed specialist. This package, which works best when farmers plant in the 40-50 bushel range, consists of the following management prac tices:
* planting at the recommended time
Attracting Wildlife Aim of DNR Program
Georgians interested in attract ing wildlife to their property are urged to enroll in the Georgia De partment of Natural Resources' Acres for Wildlife program.
For enrolling as little as one acre of land in the program, all partici pants, called cover agents, are pro vided with detailed information con cerning the species they want to manage. Upon request, plans are prepared by DNR wildlife biologists for each parcel of land in the pro gram. Cover agents also receive an official shoulder patch, certificate, calendar and other items. The cal endar, which is available only to program participants, presents a different conservation activity or fact for each day of the year.
Landowners participating in the program can hunt the land if de sired, and they are not required to give up any rights to use their land as they wish.
For further information and en rollment blanks, send a self-ad dressed, stamped, business-sized en velope to: Terry Johnson, AFW Co ordinator, Rum Creek E.M.A., Route 3, Box 180, Forsyth 31029.

Top yields are obtained when small grains are planted on time. Planting dates will depend on the area where the grains are grown and their intended uses. Check with a local Extension agent for his recommendations for the area.
* using deep tillage: chisel, moldboard or rip plowing
"Results have shown deep-till to be better than no-till and discing," said Dr. Bill Hargrove, conservation tillage specialist at the Georgia Ex periment Station in Griffin. Contin uous discing causes soil compaction and the formation of hardpans which stunt root growth and reduce yields. Hargrove added that during winter, no-till causes the soil to stay wetter and colder longer when the grain should be growing actively. Although the ground dries out in

November Garden Chores
Continue planting spring flowering bulbs.
Sow lettuce and spinach seed in a cold frame for winter salads.
To propagate forsythia, crape myrtle, spirea and flowering quince, begin rooting hardwood cuttings this fall.
Fall is an excellent time to plant trees and shrubs.
Send away for seed catalogs now, and consider trying new flower and vegetable varieties in your garden next spring.
Begin controlling lawn weeds now with pre-emergence herbicides.
Plant idle portions of your vegetable garden with clover or other cover crops.
Let cover crops grow through winter, then turn under at least three weeks before spring planting to add organic matter and nutrients to the soil.
Remove spent plants from the garden. Till or turn over soil to expose and kill overwintering insects.
Keep in mind that now is a good time to take a soil sample in your garden. Consult your local county Extension agent for directions.
Cold winter winds can rob shrubs and young trees of moisture. Mulch your plants and do not forget to water once a week if sufficient rainfall has not occurred.
Be careful not to overwater houseplants during winter months.
Pansies can be planted now for early spring blooming.
Dig and store caladiums and gladioli corms now.
Callaway Gardens Schedules Workshops
A variety of workshops are sched uled during the fall and holiday season at Callaway Gardens. The workshops will feature dried flower arranging, harvest decorations, split oak basketry, pinecone and greenery wreaths, holiday door and window decorations and festive greenery decorations.
Enrollment is limited for the classes so pre-registration is re quired. For more information on dates, fees and registration, contact the Callaway Gardens Education Department, Pine Mountain 31822 or call 404-663-2281, ext. 153.

Grandpa's Garden
The Southern magnolia can be propagated from seed collected in the fall after pods open. Soak seed in water for one or two days to remove the oily coat. Then rub seed against fine screen wire or place it inside a burlap bag and rub vigor ously.
Plant the seed immediately after cleaning. Germination may be de layed if it is allowed to dry out. Dust seed with a general purpose fungicide to reduce fungus problems while germination is taking place.
Place the seed in a raised or flat seed bed near a water source. A soil mixture of one-third garden topsoil, one-third peat moss and one-third sand is recommended for clay soil, while in sandy soils, one-half soil and one-half peat moss is desirable. Mulch the bed with pine straw or other materials. A screen wire may be spread over the bed to deter rodents.
Seed also may be stratified in order to delay planting until spring. To stratify, mix one-half peat moss with one-half clean sand. Dampen the mixture but do not make it soggy. Add one-half by volume with the seed. Place in a plastic bag, seal with a rubber band and store until planting in the refrigerator.
Place a large sheet of heavy plastic next to a pile of raked leaves, rake the pile onto the plas tic, then just pull the sheet to your compost pile or trash bin. The sheet also can be picked up by all four corners and easily carried.
One of the easiest ways to pre serve surplus peppers is to dry them. This can be accomplished slowly in an oven set on low heat.
