FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 72, No. 46 Ga. Agribusiness Merits Recognition Sometimes it seems like we celebrate something almost every day in our society. For example, Secre> taries Day, Bosses Day, Education Day, etc. Such observances bring attention to a profession, career or product and I usually create a (bit of excitement. I sometimes wonder how'such celebrations get started. We should des\ ignate November 21 as "Agribusiness Day" in Geogia. Not only is agribusiness our state's largest industry, but we have some exciting things scheduled on this particular day at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Atlanta. Our guest columnist this week is Ken Williamson, President, Georgia Agribusiness Council, P. O. Box 266, Cedartown, Georgia 30125._________________ The celebration begins with an Agribusiness luncheon. Congressman Kika de la Garza, chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee, will be the featured luncheon speaker focusing his comments on international marketing. Following lunch, we continue our seminar on International Trade and Policy. Dr. Leo Mayer of the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service will keynote and lead a panel discussion, highlighting the need to recapture our international markets of agribusiness products. Dr. Tal DuVall, director of the Georgia Extension Service, will summarize and suggest where we go from here. The annual "Silent Auction" reception and Harvest Ball, sponsored by the Georgia Agribusiness Council, will be held Friday evening. During the program, the five finalist counties of this year's Georgia Agribusiness Development and Leadership Recognition Program will be honored. They are Ben Hill, Cobb, Oconee, Screven and Upson all competing for the coveted state award which will be announced later that evening. Approximately 1,000 agribusiness leaders from across Georgia will participate in the November 21 activities all being held to bring attention to agribusiness. Gover- (Continued on Page 10) Wednesday, November 12, 1986 Georgia Cotton Growers Approve Boll Weevil Eradication Program Georgia cotton growers voting in a referendum have overwhelmingly approved a boll weevil eradication program, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently announced. "I am extremely gratified our cotton growers have given such a strong show of support to this referendum," Irvin said. "Since cotton is able to withstand dry weather better than most crops, I believe with eradication of the boll weevil it will again play a significant role in the crop scheme of Georgia farmers." Of the 2,220 eligible cotton growers, 1,520, or 68.5 percent voted. Of those voting, 88.6 percent voted in favor of the program. To pass, a minimum of 50 percent of the growers had to vote, with 66.7 percent of that number voting in favor. The eradication program will be completed in four years. During the first year, farmers will pay $10 per acre of cotton. In the second and third years they will pay $35 per acre and in the fourth year, $25 per acre. The cost will not exceed $10 per acre annual assessment for each year after the fourth year as long as a containment program is necessary. Growers will have to spray for Boll Weevil Continued Problem For Georgia's Cotton Farmers Last year he made a bumper crop, Paid every man his due, But the weevil's snout has clean him out. Ate crop and credit too. From The Story of King Cotton When Sherman marched through Georgia in 1864, he left much of the state's cotton lands in ruins. In the early twentieth century, another enemy marched into Georgia and laid cotton fields to waste. But while Sherman has been long gone, the boll weevil has continued plaguing the state's cotton crop. The boll weevil first entered the United States when it crossed the Mexican border into Texas in the early 1890s. Once in the state, the weevil rapidly multiplied and quickly traveled throughout the South. As the "winged demon" made its way across Louisiana in 1906, concerned Georgia entomolo- gists traveled to Texas to study the insect firsthand. Meanwhile, the weevil continued its trek and reached Alabama by 1911. Although farmers were urged by state officials to plant other crops, few growers listened. By the end of 1913, the pest was within 30 miles of Georgia. But severe weather had reduced weevil populations and many farmers remained unconcerned. Officially spotted in Thomasville, Georgia, on August 25, 1915, the weevil arrived in small numbers and initially caused minimal damage. But by 1919, the weevil population had recovered from its earlier setback and most farmers were not prepared for the onslaught that followed. Damage became extensive, with the state's crop plunging 30 to 40 percent below normal between 1921 and 1923. Losses to the state's cotton farmers were enormous. For instance, in (Continued on Page 10) the boll weevil during the first year only. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will pay additional expenses of the program, making up approximately 30 percent of the total cost. The program, which will be under the regulatory authority of the Commissioner, will be carried out by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the USDA in cooperation with the Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation of Georgia. Since the boll weevil's initial in vasion of Georgia in 1915, cotton farmers have continued battling this devastating pest. But with the approval of the boll weevil eradica tion program, funds finally will be made available for effective con trol. Winner Announced In Statement Contest Bernese Cagle of Canton has been selected the winner of the Georgia Agribusiness Council's Fourth Annual Statement Contest. To win the contest Ms. Cagle was required to express in 25 words or less "Why agribusiness is vital to Georgia's economy." She submitted the following winning entry: Strong agriculture is the base of our nation's economy. Agribusiness provides the supply to agriculture and the market for agriculture. Strong agribusiness guarantees Georgia's economy. Ms. Cagle was awarded two complimentary tickets to the Agribusiness Council's annual Harvest Ball planned for November 21 at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta. In addition she will receive complimentary lodging for two at the Marriott Marquis and breakfast on Saturday morning. The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Agribusiness Council expresses appreciation to those individuals who took the time to participate in the statement contest. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, November 12,1986 letteu Dear Editor: I recently visited in the home of a lady who was included on your Christmas 1985 "Remember Special People" list. She still had the cards Market Bulletin folks had sent to her last December hanging on the wall. She pointed them out and wanted me to touch and enjoy the beauty of each card. The kindness shown by a few people last year still lingers and touches her heart each day. Thanks to those who sent cards. M. Brown Route 2 Trion, Georgia 30753 Remember Special People As we have done during past holiday seasons, the Market Bulletin will again publish requests for friendship cards and letters from our elderly, shut-in readers. The letter featured above only serves to emphasize the happiness this correspondence has brought to these special folks in years past. Georgia Cooking BLACKENED FISH FILLETS 1 tablespoon paprika 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 4 teaspoons white pepper 4 teaspoons black pepper 2 teaspoons thyme 2 teaspoons oregano 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted g 6 (8-10 ounces each) fish fillets* In a shallow dish, combine spices, heat a large cast-iron skillet over high heat for 10 minutes (until it is beyond the smoking stage and you see white ash in the skillet bottom). Dip each fillet in melted butter, then coat both sides with seasoning mixture. Place fillets in hot skillet and pour 1 teaspoon melted butter on top of each fillet (be careful, as butter may flame up). Cook over high heat until underside looks charred, about 2 minutes. Turn fish over and pour 1 teaspoon melted butter on top; cook until done (about 2 more minutes). *Red fish, pompano, red snapper or grouper are recommended.
