Establish Fruit Trees Now

Bulletin Postage Up 275% For Years of Future Enjoyment

President Reagan's budget proposal which was recently passed by Congress contained language imposing a huge increase on all non-profit mailers in their postage rates. The implementation of this language by
the U.S. Post Office hit all nonprofit (church, educational and agricultural) publications such as the MARKET BULLETIN hard and without warning.
I need not point
out to you, our readers, the value of our publication. The University of Georgia Agricultural Economic Department estimates the BULLETIN contributes more than $137,000,000 a year to the state's economy.
In addition, we know from past history that the MARKET BULLETIN is more important to you, especially those of you in the farm community, during economically hard times. Hundreds of our advertisers have told me personally, "if you have a need or desire to buy or sell something, the MARKET BULLETIN is your best instrument."
Since learning of this increase, I have discussed this problem with the Governor's office and many members of the State Legislature, and they have expressed strong support for the MARKET BULLETIN. I feel certain that with the support of the Governor and our State Legislature we will continue this service which offers so much to so many.
I believe non-profit organizations such as the MARKET BULLETIN are being asked to pick up more than their fair share of the Post Office's deficit. This drastic an increase for one segment of the economy at one time is too much.
I am therefore, today, writing each of our Senators and Congressmen, as well as President R~agan, requesting that they look into this matter and encouraging them to insist that the postal

authorities find another way to reduce their deficit. A publication such as the MARKET BULLETIN that can help our depressed economy should not be jeopardized.
Again, let me emphasize this problem does not address itself to nor lack the support of our state officials. This problem originated in Washington at the White House.
If you would like to. join me in writing our officials in Washington, you will find a listing on page 12 of the names and addresses of our Congressional delegation.
Changes Proposed
For Ag Regulations
The Georgia Department of Agriculture will consider the adoption of proposed amendments to the "Sweet Potato Plant Regulations" and "Japanese Beetle Quarantine".
To obtain copies of the proposed changes or to make any comments concerning the proposed changes, contact Mr. Carl Scott, Entomology Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Room 304 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334 or call 656-3641 prior to February 22, 1982.
ag consumer line ...
The store where I buy my groceries puts higher price stickers over lower priced ones. Sometimes when I get home I can peel off stickers on canned goods and the price will be as much as 20 cents lower underneath the price I paid for the goods. This doesn't seem fair to me. Is it legal?
W.C. Canton
At this time, Georgia has no laws that restrict changing existing price stickers on products already shelved. However, some states have enacted such legislation. A strong consumer lobby would be required to bring about similar regulations in our state.

Growing fruit in your home garden performs a dual purpose. Fruit trees
not only produce delicious food but contribute to the beauty of the landscape and provide shade as well.

Apples, pears, peaches, plums, nectarines, blueberries, blackberries, figs and most any other type of woody fruit tree can be planted now during the dormant season until the latter part of March when budding begins.
The earlier you shop for fruit trees, the better the selection. Choose
Peanut farm Show
Set for february
A peanut farm show and peanut princess contest are major items on the agenda for the Georgia Peanut Commission in the upcoming months.
The Georgia Peanut Farm Show is planned for February 6, 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton. Admission is free for the show and some of Georgia's top agricultural leaders will be featured speakers. Nearly 100 exhibitors are expected and door prizes along with a free luncheon will be provided to

varieties which are adapted to Georgia's growing conditions. Before purchasing a fruit tree, check the root system and make sure it has not dried out. Also, scratch the surface of the tree with your thumbnail to be sure it is still green underneath indicating the plant is alive.
A major consideration when selecting fruit trees is whether or not they require cross pollination for production. Peaches, blackberries, plums, pears and some apple varieties generally do not require crosspollination. However, many fruit trees need "rooster" trees for proper cross-pollination. Your seed catalog or local nurseryman should be able to suggest appropriate pollinators.
Before planting your fruit trees, select a location that has good drainage. Fruit trees also need full sunlight and should not be planted in the shade of a building or large tree.
Experts say that the time spent in preparing a good planting site will contribute more to the later success of your fruit tree than any later gardening procedure.

Dear Editor:
I would like to find where I could buy a "mouli grater". They are made in France and the U.S. patent number is 2271175 and 2502867. The graters are approximately one and one half inches around and grate carrots, nuts, and cheese. I would buy a used one if someone has one for sale. If any of your readers know of a company that makes these graters, please let me know.

I have a 206 acre pine tree farm which has a creek and large swamp. When I purchased this farm, it had large (buck) rabbits but in the past few years I have not seen many.

No fertilizer should be applied to the tree at planting time. A complete balanced fertilizer should be applied to the young tree when first growth appears.
Be sure and remove labels or wire attached to the tree at planting time to prevent girdling after growth begins. In cold weather, newly planted trees should be mulched with pine straw or_ other mulching material. Fig trees are particularly vulnerable to cold weather and should be protected with mulch.
Most standard size fruit trees rarely come into production before they are six to seven years old. Dwarf varieties will usually bear fruit after three years and blackberries and blueberries after approximately one year.

Plan Spring Garden Now With the Help of Seed Catalogs

It is time to start thinking about this spring's garden and what better
way to begin than with a seed catalog. Many familiar garden items from asparagus to zucchini can be found
in seed catalogs. Often these catalogs are the only source for such unique items as kiwi fruit trees, ginseng, herbs, and plastic snakes to scare off hungry birds from your garden and fruit trees.

Besides making good "wish books," a seed catalog enables you to get a jump on the gardening season and helps save money as well. By starting your own seedlings, you can plant good-size plants earlier and with less expense than if you bought your own seedlings.
Following is a list of many companies which offer catalogs. Unless otherwise noted, these companies offer free catalogs and lists.

Acidity of Rainfall Slightly Increasing

It probably will be spring before you can actually determine how much damage was done to your ornamentals by recent record low temperatures. Just because your plants' foliage is discolored or bronzed does not mean it is dead. This is simply the plant's reaction to the sudden cold weather.
Determine whether or not ornamental branches are dead or alive by scratching the bark with your fingernail. The wood underneath should still be green if it is living.
Rapid temperature changes are the primary cause of cold damage so be prepared for the next cold. wave. Maintain a three to five inch mulch around your ornamentals year around.
A mulch of pine straw, for example, insulates the plant's roots and protects the soil from rapid temperature fluctuations in the winter and helps conserve soil moisture and choke out weeds in the summer.
If you have a problem with your house cats digging in your large potted plants, Ron Edmundson of Atlanta has a solution. He recommends burying pine cones about halfway in the soil around your plants. This should discourage your cat from digging and damaging your plants.
Ferns need special attention during the winter months. Make sure your Boston fern is getting medium light and high humidity. Do them a favor by misting regularly. This helps prevent leaf scorch or tip burn especially when heat in your home lowers the level of air moisture.
To provide additional moisture, you also can set your ferns on trays filled with gravel and water. Set the containers on top of the gravel but not touching the water.

The use of fossil fuels such as coal and oil has caused the quality of precipitation to gradually change. Many tons of nitrogen and sulfur oxides are released into the air annually as a result of fossil fuel use. Complex chemical reactions can convert unknown percentages of these pollutants into acids which are returned to earth in the form of acid rain.
Although the term sounds harsh, acid rain actually includes all forms of precipitation that are more acid than normal. Normal precipitation usually has a pH of 5.7. As shown by the diagram of the pH scale, acidity increases as the numbers become lower.
pH scale for soil reaction
v. 0
j -- --5.0
l= -4.0
This scale is a "yardstick" for measuring soil acidity. A pH reading of 7 is neutral; that is, neither acid nor alkaline. The smaller the number, the stronger the acidity.

Do Not IIGet Burned" When Buying Firewood

North Georgia rain has a pH average of 4.6 compared with the midwest's rain of about 4.3 pH (about as acid as tomato juice). The northeastern United States tends to receive more acid rain that other parts of the country. This is believed to be the result of air flow patterns coming from the midwest, although the exact source is unknown.
Fortunately most soils are buffered and resistant to changes caused by acid rain. The use of lime and fertilizer on agricultural land overshadows any effects it might have. Limestone, commonly used on acid agricultural land, counteracts acid rain as well as other acids formed in the soil from the use of certain fertilizers and decaying plants.
Soil in the humid regions of the South, has the tendency to become acid naturally because of decaying plant residue. This acidity is much greater than that caused by acid rain.
There is concern that acid rain may cause leaching in nonagricultural soil such as forest regions and areas with poor soil. Leaching leads to faster loss of nutrients which may lead to reduction in productivity.
The direct effects of acid rain on plants has been demonstrated in controlled experiments. When simulated acid rain (pH 3.8) was used on soybeans, leaf spots resulted. The use of lime and fertilizer, however, overshadows the effect of agricultural rain in the field.
The National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) was established in 1977 to monitor acid rain and its effects. Monitoring stations set up across the country on a cooperative basis, collect and measure acid rain samples. NADP works in cooperation with state agricultural experiment stations, National Park Service, EPA and other federal agencies.

such a pile; the rest is air space. A face cord is a pile of wood eight
feet long, four feet high, and as wide as the lengths of the wood cut which usually ranges from 12, 16 or 24 in-

ches. Because a face cord is less than a full cord, it should be priced less.
When purchasing wood that is delivered, do not accept split deliveries. You may get less than what you paid_for.
