FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Vol. 68, No.4 TD1tt11tY 9'WiK Wednesday, January 27, 1982 Establish Fruit Trees Now Bulletin Postage Up 275% For Years of Future Enjoyment President Reagan's budget proposal which was recently passed by Congress contained language imposing a huge increase on all non-profit mailers in their postage rates. The implementation of this language by the U.S. Post Office hit all nonprofit (church, educational and agricultural) publications such as the MARKET BULLETIN hard and without warning. I need not point out to you, our readers, the value of our publication. The University of Georgia Agricultural Economic Department estimates the BULLETIN contributes more than $137,000,000 a year to the state's economy. In addition, we know from past history that the MARKET BULLETIN is more important to you, especially those of you in the farm community, during economically hard times. Hundreds of our advertisers have told me personally, "if you have a need or desire to buy or sell something, the MARKET BULLETIN is your best instrument." Since learning of this increase, I have discussed this problem with the Governor's office and many members of the State Legislature, and they have expressed strong support for the MARKET BULLETIN. I feel certain that with the support of the Governor and our State Legislature we will continue this service which offers so much to so many. I believe non-profit organizations such as the MARKET BULLETIN are being asked to pick up more than their fair share of the Post Office's deficit. This drastic an increase for one segment of the economy at one time is too much. I am therefore, today, writing each of our Senators and Congressmen, as well as President R~agan, requesting that they look into this matter and encouraging them to insist that the postal authorities find another way to reduce their deficit. A publication such as the MARKET BULLETIN that can help our depressed economy should not be jeopardized. Again, let me emphasize this problem does not address itself to nor lack the support of our state officials. This problem originated in Washington at the White House. If you would like to. join me in writing our officials in Washington, you will find a listing on page 12 of the names and addresses of our Congressional delegation. Changes Proposed For Ag Regulations The Georgia Department of Agriculture will consider the adoption of proposed amendments to the "Sweet Potato Plant Regulations" and "Japanese Beetle Quarantine". To obtain copies of the proposed changes or to make any comments concerning the proposed changes, contact Mr. Carl Scott, Entomology Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Room 304 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334 or call 656-3641 prior to February 22, 1982. ag consumer line ... The store where I buy my groceries puts higher price stickers over lower priced ones. Sometimes when I get home I can peel off stickers on canned goods and the price will be as much as 20 cents lower underneath the price I paid for the goods. This doesn't seem fair to me. Is it legal? W.C. Canton At this time, Georgia has no laws that restrict changing existing price stickers on products already shelved. However, some states have enacted such legislation. A strong consumer lobby would be required to bring about similar regulations in our state. (Continued on Page 12) Growing fruit in your home garden performs a dual purpose. Fruit trees not only produce delicious food but contribute to the beauty of the landscape and provide shade as well. Apples, pears, peaches, plums, nectarines, blueberries, blackberries, figs and most any other type of woody fruit tree can be planted now during the dormant season until the latter part of March when budding begins. The earlier you shop for fruit trees, the better the selection. Choose Peanut farm Show Set for february A peanut farm show and peanut princess contest are major items on the agenda for the Georgia Peanut Commission in the upcoming months. The Georgia Peanut Farm Show is planned for February 6, 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton. Admission is free for the show and some of Georgia's top agricultural leaders will be featured speakers. Nearly 100 exhibitors are expected and door prizes along with a free luncheon will be provided to (Continued on Page 12) varieties which are adapted to Georgia's growing conditions. Before purchasing a fruit tree, check the root system and make sure it has not dried out. Also, scratch the surface of the tree with your thumbnail to be sure it is still green underneath indicating the plant is alive. A major consideration when selecting fruit trees is whether or not they require cross pollination for production. Peaches, blackberries, plums, pears and some apple varieties generally do not require crosspollination. However, many fruit trees need "rooster" trees for proper cross-pollination. Your seed catalog or local nurseryman should be able to suggest appropriate pollinators. Before planting your fruit trees, select a location that has good drainage. Fruit trees also need full sunlight and should not be planted in the shade of a building or large tree. Experts say that the time spent in preparing a good planting site will contribute more to the later success of your fruit tree than any later gardening procedure.
