Better Trees
For Georgians
The Christmas season has a new tradition. Instead of buying a Christmas tree grown in the northern states or Canada, many Georgians are finding they can take their family out to a Christmas tree
forest and choose their tree, cut it themselves and take this fresh Georgia grown Christmas tree home.
In last week's Market Bulletin there was a list of many Christmas tree growers who offer this service. Select a quality Christmas tree at an affordable price and have a lot of fun this Christmas. The Christmas tree industry of Georgia was virtually nonexistent

until a few years after World War II. Farmers tried to produce a reasonable Christmas tree from many native species, but it was obvious by the late 50's that a strong research effort was necessary in order to get the industry on its feet.
In the early 60's different branches of the College of Agriculture for the University of Georgia went to work developing a desirable Christmas tree for our state and the cultural practices necessary to make Christmas tree production profitable in Georgia.
By the early 70's the Virginia pine had been chosen from dozens of species tested as the most likely tree to be successful in our state. The white pine also showed promise along with other minor species.
The Virginia pine is now cultivated for Christmas trees in states from Virginia through Texas based on research and promotion developed here in Georgia.
The South rapidly is becoming self

Money Grows on Trees in Georgia
The first International Pig Trade Show will be held December 10-12 at the Atlanta Civic Center. Hog producers from the United States and Canada will have an opportunity to observe hog production technology from throughout the world.
More than 350 exhibitors representing several countries have expressed enthusiasm over this unique opportunity to display their products and services and share their pig rearing ideas with U. S. and foreign pig producers.
Special activities such as seminars, banquets and tours will also be held in conjunction with the show. For additional details on the premier show, contact Charles M. Rose, show manager, P. O. Box 947, Cullman, Alabama 35055, 205-734-6800.
Select and Maintain
Your Christmas Tree
With Christmas just around the corner, now is the time to become familiar with some simple procedures which can help make the selection of a "perfect" Christmas tree a little easier.
Determine where in your home you will display the tree. With this in mind you can choose a tree with the correct height and know whether all four sides must be suitable for display.
Select a tree that is the right height for the space you have chosen. Cutting large portions from the tree will alter its natural taper.
Choose a fresh tree. The needles should be resilient, but not brittle. Run your finger down a branch the needles should stick to each twig.
Shake or bounce the tree to make sure needles are firmly attached. If only a few drop, the tree is probably fresh. With proper care it should retain its freshness indoors throughout the holidays.
The limbs should be strong enough to support ornaments and strings of lights.
Once the "perfect" tree has been selected, follow these tips in caring

Georgia leads the nation in pecan production and the 1981 crop is forecast
at 120 million pounds, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service's
most recent survey of pecan growers. This is 15 million pounds above last
year's production. If forecasts become a reality, the 1981 crop will be the
third largest ever produced in Georgia.
"There will be plenty of nuts this
year," explained Dr. Tom Crocker,
Extension horticulturist, Tifton.
"The quality of the nut will be down

because of dry and cloudy weather. Also, pecan trees haven't completely
The special horse edition of the Market Bulletin is coming January 13. This issue will include notices for horse shows scheduled for January, February and March as well as at stud notices, boarding facilities
and miscellaneous equine equipment.
If your organization has a show scheduled for January, February or March, submit your announcement, not to exceed 30 words, by January 6. If possible, include rain dates and a phone number for additional information.
Deadline for at stud, boarding and miscellaneous equine equipment notices is also January 6.
recovered from the previous three years of dry weather."
Pecans generated over $66 million in the state's economy in 1980 and continue to be an important horticultural crop for the backyard grower as well as the large commercial producer.
For folks with a couple of trees in the backyard, pecan trees contribute beauty and shade; the nuts are often considered an added bonus. Because the small grower does not depend on the nuts as a major cash crop, these trees are often indifferently managed and are not regularly sprayed.
The commercial grower, however, views his pecan trees as a part of his livelihood. Pecan groves are closely managed, regularly sprayed and often irrigated.
Both the large producer and the homeowner face disease and insect

I would like to know what will kill the white flies on my vegetables in the garden?
M.S. Hartwell
Our entomologist recommends Malathion or Thiodan liquid to kill these pests. Spray every five days, following label directions for mixing and spraying these insecticides. White flies are difficult to exterminate. There is no approved surefire method recommended.

What is the best way to thaw meat and poultry if you're in a hurry? R.M. Sylvania
Meat and poultry may be thawed in watertight wrapping under cold water. Change the water frequently to keep it cold. Cook meat immediately after thawing. Incidently, with the holiday season here, you may be in a rush with turkey thawing. It is recommended that you thaw your bird at room temperature in a tightly closed double paper bag. Double bags provide insulation and allow even thawing to occur. It is really best, however, that you thaw your meat and poultry in the refrigerator.

Grandpa's Garden
If you have the space in your yard and you would like to add evergreens, consider having a "liv ing Christmas tree," and planting it outdoors after Christmas.
Be sure and keep the tree watered daily indoors (a potted tree with a cubic foot of soil in its container takes up to a quart or two of water daily) and plant it within a day or two after Christmas. Dig your hole for planting ahead of time and water the tree well after you set it out. Mulch with sawdust or wood chips.
Indoors, a living Christmas tree often starts to break dormancy and buds may begin to swell. Putting such a tree outdoors in very cold weather can cause deformity, unless it is watered well with warm water and given protection from the winter.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Money Grows
Better Trees
(Continued from Page 1) problems in pecan production. The most common disease of pecan trees in Georgia is scab. This fungal disease affects the leaves and nut shucks and can ruin a crop.
Aphids and weevils are the major insects attacking pecans. Applica tion of sprays for insect and disease control can sometimes make the dif ference between a short or good crop for the commercial grower. Besides a regular spray schedule, growers also should practice good sanitation and cultural techniques.
Backyard pecan growers don't have the necessary equipment to tackle insect and disease problems by spraying. However, they can utilize good sanitation practices.
Ground trash, such as broken limbs, shucks and insect infested nuts should be removed during the winter. Low hanging limbs should be pruned to allow better air circulation and sunlight penetration to the ground below. Trees also should be fertilized in the spring with 5-10-15 or 6-12-12.
Often despite good cultural prac tices, the homeowner is faced with "no nuts" from his pecan tree. Backyard trees often have alter nating good and bad years because of the pecan's fruiting habit, accor ding to Crocker.
"After a tree produces a good crop of nuts, it often requires a year to replenish itself," explained Crocker. "This is why commercial producers closely manage their trees to main tain foliage year round."
If you are interested in more infor mation concerning pecan produc tion, contact your local county Ex tension office and request the following publications: "Pecans in Georgia," "Pecan Insects and Diseases and Their Control," and "Pecan Weevils."

sufficient in Christmas tree produc tion. We have learned to produce a quality tree in Georgia at an affor dable price.
We have another advantage in pro ducing local trees since the cost of shipping is going up rapidly. The trees from distant places such as the lake states, the far west and even Canada will go up in price due to transportation cost increases as well as production cost increases.
Approximately 400 people are growing Christmas trees in Georgia. Most of these people are members of the Georgia Christmas Tree Associa tion which was organized in the ear.ly 60's when the University Exten sion Service first promoted the Christmas tree industry.
Today the growers association is assisting its members by providing them with genetically improved seedlings to plant and many other services.
My opinion is that we do not need more Christmas tree growers in Georgia and throughout the South, but better trained growers that are committed to producing a high quali ty tree. Presently there are enough Virginia pine, white pine, redcedar and other species planted in Georgia and throughout the South to meet the needs for the local markets.
Our production is falling short of demand due to inexperienced pro ducers often who are not willing to stick it out the four to six years it takes to produce a quality tree.
The University Extension service is engaged in an intensive program to upgrade the quality of production without creating an over-supply. An over-supply is a real threat and a possibility. There is only room for those who are willing to grow a quality tree in an efficient manner.
If you need assistance in produc ing Christmas trees, lease do not hesitate to call your county agent for further information.

for your Christmas tree: If you buy your tree several days
before it will be put up and decorated, store it outside where it is cool. Cut the bottom of the tree at a diagonal about one inch above the original cut -- this opens up the pores and allows for better water ab sorption. Place the bottom of the tree in a container of water; sprinkling the tree with water also will help it retain its freshness.
When you bring the tree indoors, saw off the diagonal end making the butt end flat. This makes it easier to place the tree in a stand and helps the tree absorb water.
Be sure the tree is well supported at the base and keep it away from fireplaces, radiators, heaters, or any other source of heat.
Never use open flames near the tree. Never leave your home with the electric lights on.
Never overload extension cords with Christmas lights. No more than three strings of lights should be used for any one standard extension.
When decorating outside, alway use weatherproof lighting.
Use "angel hair" and artificial snow separately; when combined the mixture becomes highly flammable.
The longer your tree remains in doors, the more combustible it will become so you may want to remove your tree as soon after Christmas as possible.
By following these tips on selec ting and maintaining your Christmas tree, you will be assured of a fresh, attractive tree and a holiday season free from Christmas tree mishaps.
