FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 67, Number 48 Wednesday, December 2, 1981 B. ft. Better Trees For Georgians The Christmas season has a new tradition. Instead of buying a Christmas tree grown in the northern states or Canada, many Georgians are finding they can take their family out to a Christmas tree forest and choose their tree, cut it themselves and take this fresh Georgia grown Christmas tree home. In last week's Market Bulletin there was a list of many Christmas tree growers who offer this service. Select a quality Christmas tree at an affordable price and have a lot of fun this Christmas. The Christmas tree industry of Georgia was virtually nonexistent (Our guest columnist this week is B. R. Murray, Extension Forester and President of the National Christmas Tree Association, P. O. Box 1209, Tifton31794.) until a few years after World War II. Farmers tried to produce a reasonable Christmas tree from many native species, but it was obvious by the late 50's that a strong research effort was necessary in order to get the industry on its feet. In the early 60's different branches of the College of Agriculture for the University of Georgia went to work developing a desirable Christmas tree for our state and the cultural practices necessary to make Christmas tree production profitable in Georgia. By the early 70's the Virginia pine had been chosen from dozens of species tested as the most likely tree to be successful in our state. The white pine also showed promise along with other minor species. The Virginia pine is now cultivated for Christmas trees in states from Virginia through Texas based on research and promotion developed here in Georgia. The South rapidly is becoming self (Continued on Page 8) Swine Production Featured at Show Pecans Money Grows on Trees in Georgia The first International Pig Trade Show will be held December 10-12 at the Atlanta Civic Center. Hog producers from the United States and Canada will have an opportunity to observe hog production technology from throughout the world. More than 350 exhibitors representing several countries have expressed enthusiasm over this unique opportunity to display their products and services and share their pig rearing ideas with U. S. and foreign pig producers. Special activities such as seminars, banquets and tours will also be held in conjunction with the show. For additional details on the premier show, contact Charles M. Rose, show manager, P. O. Box 947, Cullman, Alabama 35055, 205-734-6800. Select and Maintain Your Christmas Tree With Christmas just around the corner, now is the time to become familiar with some simple procedures which can help make the selection of a "perfect" Christmas tree a little easier. Determine where in your home you will display the tree. With this in mind you can choose a tree with the correct height and know whether all four sides must be suitable for display. Select a tree that is the right height for the space you have chosen. Cutting large portions from the tree will alter its natural taper. Choose a fresh tree. The needles should be resilient, but not brittle. Run your finger down a branch the needles should stick to each twig. Shake or bounce the tree to make sure needles are firmly attached. If only a few drop, the tree is probably fresh. With proper care it should retain its freshness indoors throughout the holidays. The limbs should be strong enough to support ornaments and strings of lights. Once the "perfect" tree has been selected, follow these tips in caring (Continued on Page 8) Georgia leads the nation in pecan production and the 1981 crop is forecast at 120 million pounds, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service's most recent survey of pecan growers. This is 15 million pounds above last year's production. If forecasts become a reality, the 1981 crop will be the third largest ever produced in Georgia. "There will be plenty of nuts this year," explained Dr. Tom Crocker, Extension horticulturist, Tifton. "The quality of the nut will be down Horse Edition because of dry and cloudy weather. Also, pecan trees haven't completely The special horse edition of the Market Bulletin is coming January 13. This issue will include notices for horse shows scheduled for January, February and March as well as at stud notices, boarding facilities and miscellaneous equine equipment. If your organization has a show scheduled for January, February or March, submit your announcement, not to exceed 30 words, by January 6. If possible, include rain dates and a phone number for additional information. Deadline for at stud, boarding and miscellaneous equine equipment notices is also January 6. recovered from the previous three years of dry weather." Pecans generated over $66 million in the state's economy in 1980 and continue to be an important horticultural crop for the backyard grower as well as the large commercial producer. For folks with a couple of trees in the backyard, pecan trees contribute beauty and shade; the nuts are often considered an added bonus. Because the small grower does not depend on the nuts as a major cash crop, these trees are often indifferently managed and are not regularly sprayed. The commercial grower, however, views his pecan trees as a part of his livelihood. Pecan groves are closely managed, regularly sprayed and often irrigated. Both the large producer and the homeowner face disease and insect (Continued on Page 8) QQ consumer line... I would like to know what will kill the white flies on my vegetables in the garden? M.S. Hartwell Our entomologist recommends Malathion or Thiodan liquid to kill these pests. Spray every five days, following label directions for mixing and spraying these insecticides. White flies are difficult to exterminate. There is no approved surefire method recommended. *** What is the best way to thaw meat and poultry if you're in a hurry? R.M. Sylvania Meat and poultry may be thawed in watertight wrapping under cold water. Change the water frequently to keep it cold. Cook meat immediately after thawing. Incidently, with the holiday season here, you may be in a rush with turkey thawing. It is recommended that you thaw your bird at room temperature in a tightly closed double paper bag. Double bags provide insulation and allow even thawing to occur. It is really best, however, that you thaw your meat and poultry in the refrigerator.
