Ag Engineers
Play Major Role
Water, energy and mechanization are keys to the successful food chain in America and agricultural engineers are responsible for the continuing availability, the operational efficiency, and the efficacious usage of these ingredients.
The application of engineering technology to the production and processing of food and fiber is most effective when there is close cooperation with agricultural scientists. This is the reason Agricultural Engineering is a part of the College of Agriculture rather than a unit of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
(Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Robert H. Brown, Jr., Chairman Agricultural Engineering Division, University of Georgia, College of Agriculture, Athens 30602 and President of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.)____________
Engineering applied to agriculture can be very basic, excitingly practical, and frequently more highly sophisticated and complex than most imagine. The University of Georgia's agricultural engineering program is nationally recognized for its accountability in providing engineering answers for the agriculture of the state, for the appropriateness of its research, for the quality and number of its graduates, and for its leadership in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.
The University's agricultural engineers probably make their greatest contribution in the classroom. Education and research are effectively coordinated in the five research goals of agricultural engineering from 1980-85.
I. Reduce petroleum consumption in production agriculture by 50 percent.
In Athens, Tifton and Griffin, data is being collected from instrumented tractors to determine how much energy would be required to produce and harvest a crop.
Energy for irrigation is being studied and will be reduced via lower pressure sprinklers, conservation and careful selection of irrigation dates for particular crops, and by selecting the time of application (maybe at night) to reduce

Dear Editor: I am trying to locate anyone who has a top (with or
without gasket) for a Mirro M-0296 six quart pressure cooker. I have tried the manufacturer and they have discontinued this model and no longer have parts for it. I sure would like to get a top so I can use my pressure cooker.
William Cousins P.O. Box 1233 Reidsville, Ga. 30453
Dear Editor: I would like to get in touch with anyone who has
anything to do with catfish, raising, hauling, processing, etc. Please contact me.
J.R.Nix Catfish Research 1110 Second Aven ue West Point, Ga. 31823
Dear Editor: I used to have roach bugs and water bugs but a friend
told me how to kill them and it works. Get small jars of boric acid in powder or crystal form. Place around and behind washer, stove, hot water heater and in bath room behind commode and clothes basket. Take a teaspoon and put powder where you have seen bugs in dark and damp places. Use about four jars to start. Then two jars each six months. This powder is clean, odorless and safe. Bugs will disappear in a few weeks.

Dear Editor: I have been reading the MARKET BULLETIN for over 40
years. I enjoy it so much. I want to share my method of grating coconut.
I just finished grating one and not one scratch of the fingers. When the pieces get too small to hold, I stick a fork in them, turn the fork over and press firmly as you grate. Use the grate near the bottom when grating the small pieces.
Ouida Daniel P.O. Fox 126 Cave Spring, Ga. 30124
Dear Editor: Can any of your readers help me find someone that
sells kerosene stoves, not heaters. I mean one with an oven.
Mildred Holdridge Route 4, Box 628 Newnan, Ga. 30263
Dear Editor: Regarding your request for information about a
smooth-mouthed mule, this refers to an animal over 12 years of age. When young, horses and mules have grooves or pits in the grinding surface of the front teeth. These are used to determine the age.
As the animal grows old, the grooves wear away so that by an average of 12 years the teeth are smooth.
Dr. J. T. Bryson Route 1, Box 55 Washington, Ga. 30673
FARM INCOME
FOOD PRICES
Net farm income this year will be $23 to $25 billion. That is down 20 to 25 percent from
the $31 billion in 1979.
Food prices are expected to go up 10 to 15 percent in 1981, say economists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Homemade Rolls
What could be better on a cold winters' day than the smell of freshly baked yeast rolls? Follow this simple recipe to make all of the many variations.
Basic Yeast Rolls
31/2-4!/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup shortening
divided
1 teaspoon salt
1 package dry yeast
1 egg
1 1/4 cups milk
1/4 cup sugar
In large mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour and
yeast. Heat and stir milk, sugar, shortening and salt til
warm and until the shortening is almost melted (115-120
degrees F). Add to flour in mixing bowl. Add egg. Mix un-
til blended. Beat three minutes with electric mixer at high
speed. Stir in remaining 2-3 cups of flour with a spoon to
make a soft dough. Shape into a ball.
Place in greased bowl and turn to grease surface.
(These rolls could be placed in the refrigerator at this
point and held from 2 hours up to 3-4 days. Shape about 1
1/2-2 hours before serving. Let rise 1-1 1/4 hours and
bake as directed.) Cover and let rise in a warm place (85
degrees F). 1 1/2-2 hours or until double in bulk. Punch
down and place on floured board. Cover and let stand 10
minutes. Shape as desired. Let rise one hour and bake in
preheated 400 degrees F oven as directed.
Pan Rolls
Lightly grease two 9-inch round cake pans. Divide
dough in half. Roll first half into 12-15 balls and place in
pan. Brush lightly with melted margarine or butter. Repeat
with second half. Let rise in a warm place one hour and
bake in preheated 400 degrees F. oven about 15 minutes
or until golden brown. Makes 24-30 rolls.
Cloverleaf Rolls
Lightly grease two muffin pans. Roll dough into one inch
balls and place three balls in each muffin cup. Brush with
melted butter. Let rise in a warm place one hour and bake
in preheated 400 degrees F. oven 12-15 minutes or until
golden brown. Makes 2 dozen rolls.
Crescent Rolls
Divide dough in half. Shape each half into a 12 inch cir-
cle on a floured board. Cut circle into 16 equal wedges.
Roll up tightly from wide edge to'point. Place on greased
cookie sheet and curve slightly. Brush with melted butter
or margarine. Let rise in a warm place one hour and bake
in preheated 400 degrees F. oven 12-15 minutes or until
golden brown. Makes 16 rolls.
Parker House Rolls
Divide dough in half. Roll one half into a 9"xl2" rec-
tangle about 1 /4" thick. Cut out one dozen 3" circles with
a floured cutter. Brush with melted butter or margarine.
Make a crease across each circle and fold in half. Press
edges together. Place in rows on grease pan. Brush with
butter or margarine. Repeat with second half of dough. Let
rise one hour. Bake in preheated 400 degrees F. oven for
15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Makes two dozen
rolls.
Brown & Serve Rolls
Shape rolls, let rise one hour. Bake in preheated 275 de-
grees F oven for 20 minutes, but do not allow them to
brown. Allow to cool thoroughly out or off the baking pan.
Wrap in foil. Store in refrigerator up to one week or in the
freezer up to two months. To brown, bake in preheated
400 degrees F oven for 8-12 minutes.

Agricultural seed and plants for sale
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. AU agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition.
Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as MeNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the MARKET BULLETIN office or the Seed Division of the Department of Agriculture, 656-3633.

Horse Production Efficiency
(Continued From Page 1)
diet of about 11/2 percent of their body weight in coastal hay or its equivalent plus about two hours of grazing on good quality winter annuals. No grain or concentrate will be required until the last 30 days before foaling.
Selection and Culling
The most dramatic savings in feed cost can be made by culling or reducing the number of horses to be wintered. It also increases reproductive efficiency and raises the value of foals produced.
Increasing Reproductive Efficiency
Most Georgia horse producers are maintaining too many broodmares for the number of live foals weaned and marketed.
A diligent program of immunization and preventive health manage-
ment, especially in regard to vaccinating for viral abortion (rhinopneumonitis), is most critical.
Conserve Labor
Horse production is basically a labor intensive form of livestock production. Because horses are used as athletes and require individual handling to serve as a foundation for training, much of this labor input is essential.
(This is the fifth of several stories prepared by Cooperative Extension Service experts on the farm crisis.)____________________
Horses raised in an outdoor, group-fed situation can be produced with much less labor, and will tend to be healthier and more athletic animals.
Because of Georgia's favorable climate and longer growing season, we have a competitive advantage in
raising better horses at a lower cost if they are developed in an outdoor management program.
Energy Conservation
Reducing confinement helps conserve energy, but the most energy is used in horse transportation. Most horsemen pull vans and trailers many miles in the process of breeding mares, marketing, showing and promoting their horses. Smaller breeders often do not own a stallion and depend upon stallions at public servrce.
Marketing Strategies
Selling horses at an earlier age. The profit potential in a weanling or yearling is typically much greater than in a mature horse. Improve the quality of these prospects and manage them to make them attractive to buyers at an earlier age.
Special Permit Required
For Spring Turkey Hunt
The U. S. Department of Interior has announced plans for a spring turkey gobbler hunt in the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge. One hunt is scheduled for April 6-8, the next for April 9-11.
Fifty permits will be issued at a public drawing for each three day hunt. Permits are non transferable and each hunter must sign his own application.
For an application form, send a self-addressed stamped business envelope to Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, Round Oak, Georgia 31080. Completed applications must be received in refuge headquarters by noon. March 9.
The Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge is located in Jones and Jasper counties. Bag limit for the hunt is one bearded turkey per hunter.

TREES DYING
Many hardwood trees, especially oaks, are dying in the woods and in urban lawns. Drought is the most probable cause, according to Ted Walker, Extension Service forester. Several dry summers in a row have bwered water tables and reduced available moisture. Walker says some kinds of trees are affected more than others. Oaks and dogwoods are two of the first species to show moisture stress.
CLEANING TIP
Use the round dusting brush to vacuum baseboards, sills, moldings and picture frames. It's quicker than dust cloths. And it doesn't scatter the dust so much.

When I signed a pest control contract five years ago, the termite company agreed to make annual inspections for $25. Now, the price has gone up to $35 while my contract states the lower price in black-and-white.
C.S. Warner Robins Sorry, but the State Attorney General's office has ruled that prices may increase in a service contract without violating the terms of the agreement.

At the service station where I bought gas, I noticed that the 9/10ths on the sign was practically too tiny to read. Shouldn't this be outlawed?
Mrs.J.H. Columbus State regulations are specific in stating how large these figures should be, and the entire price should be legible. Please phone us with specifics and an inspector will check out the sign.

are plastic or styrofoam, they don't leak water when the plants are watered. We might add that the egg shell will decompose once planted leaving roots in tact.
If you need to add humidity to your home, consider an aquarium. Besides the enjoyment it offers, every two to three weeks, 1/3 to 1/2
Make Paper Logs
For Fuel Savings
Old newspapers can be made into fire logs with little trouble. They burn readily, produce warmth and help clean up stacks of unsightly papers which can be a fire hazard.
Roll layers of newspaper around a broomstick as tightly as possible. Roll the log as thick as you want. Tie the "log" with string and remove the broomstick.
You can burn the logs right away or you can improve their performance by adding a tablespoon of detergent to a tub of water and soaking the logs overnight.
Next day, remove logs and knead them with your hands. This makes the logs more compact and longerburning. Dry the logs several weeks before using.
There are other things you can safely burn in your fireplace. Waxcoated cartons, dried orange skins, peanut hulls, and pine cones burn quickly and make good kindling.
Other things should never be burned. Cellophane, styrofoam, plastic and plastic-coated materials should be placed in the garbage, not in the fireplace.
of the tank can be drained and used to water houseplants. The water will be rich in nitrogen and will serve as a mild plant food.
"I know I'm old and some folks will say this is crazy, but I give my houseplants a dose of cod liver oil every other day and they look beautiful," says Mrs. Mildred Moore. "My grandchildren gave me a beautiful plant last year for my birthday, but it looked awful when I got home from being in the hospital several weeks. I started giving my plant a dose of cod liver oil and now it is putting out new leaves and looks better than ever."
Mr. and Mrs. Homer Drake, Augusta, proudly display their prize turnips. The turnip in Mr. Drake's hand weighed six pounds. The tops were 26 inches high. The five turnips in the picture weighed a total of 24 pounds and were grown from "Just Right" variety turnip seed.

evaporation. Also energy for water pumping may be supplied by an alternative fuel.
Already the new technology of electrostatic charging of spray particles has resulted in a potential reduction of at least 50 percent in the energy involved in pesticide application.
Structures are being redesigned to be more energy efficient and to utilize non-petroleum based energy sources such as solar and methane.
II. Develop multiple-cropping production systems for irrigated crop production.
Two crops per year will lead to greater production per acre per year and to a favorable economic analysis for equipment purchased by reducing idle-time of the mechanization equipment. The research also is concerned with expanding population versus a fixed number of acres from which to feed the population.
III. Initiate a coordinated research program in agricultural structures for livestock and poultry production.
This study emphasizes renovation for efficiency; modular retrofitting with improvements gained by adding structural components in stages; and designs for new structures using active solar, passive solar, improved ventilation, more efficient lighting and microprocessor based controls. IV. Improved systems and equipment for harvesting, handling, and processing biomass from woody plants, fruits, vegetables and nut crops.
Work is underway to improve harvesting efficiency and handling of pecans, vegetables, Christmas trees and seed pine-cones. Also being developed is a system for harvesting low-grade biomass for conversion to thermal energy via direct combustion. The "biomass burner" developed so far is portable, has an efficiency as high as 70 percent, and can be used in crop drying, poultry houses, dairies, and greenhouse.
V. A practical system for on-thefarm production of alternative liquid fuels including vegetables oils and power alcohol.
Agricultural engineers will assist with the equipment and the energy sources for on-the-farm production of alcohol as well as with evaluation of engine performance. But the primary emphasis by agricultural engineers will be with vegetable oils (peanut, soybean, perhaps sunflower) for diesel engines since 90-95 percent of farm power units are diesel.
On the national scene, Georgia's agricultural engineers have earned the highest of reputations in their professional society. Last year the National President of Student Technology Clubs, the Most Outstanding Agricultural Engineering Student in the Nation, and the Vice President of the Student Engineering Clube were from Georgia.
This year Georgia leads with the National President of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, and the Vice Presidents of the Engineering Clubs and the Technology Clubs of the ASAE.

Garden
"This winter has been so cold that I've had to leave my cat in the house," writes Carol Smith, Floyd County. "Since I was spending a fortune on kitty litter, I asked an oldtimer if there was anything useful I could do with it besides throwing it in the trash can. He told me to put it in the vegetable garden. Do you think this would be all right?"
Since kitty litter is made from absorbent clay, adding it back to the soil is an excellent idea. In addition the small particles will help aerate the heavy clay soils when you till your garden. Putting what's in the kitty litter in the garden is okay too.
"My husband had a wonderful idea about starting seed inside," says Mrs. J. R. Kelly. "He asked me to start saving the egg cartons and egg shells for him to start the seed in. Joe places half an egg shell in each little cup in the carton, punches a tiny hole in the bottom of each shell with a pin and then puts soil in the shell. He plants one or two seeds in each shell and when spring comes he just lifts out the whole little plant egg shell and all and plants it in the garden," explained Mrs. Kelly.
According to Mrs. Kelly, the carton serves as a tray to hold the seedlings in place and since most cartons

can be greatly reduced with healthy certified plants.
When you are ready to plant your patch, turn the soil to a depth of 10 to 12 inches. Work out all the lumps and remove any grass. For the 30 square foot bed add three cubic feet of peat or half a large bale, two pounds of hydra ted lime and 1/2 pound of 8-8-8 fertilizer. If you suspect nematodes, treat soil with a nematicide.
Work all additions into the soil, smooth the surface and let set for several days. Make a "V" shaped hole with your trowel to allow strawberry roots to be planted "down". Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly. Caution: do not plant following a rain when the soil is extra wet.
Mulch the bed with pine bark, pine needles or seed free grain straw. During the first growing season, pinch back the flowers to allow the plants to put all their energy in growing.
Around June 15 and again around the first of September, apply another 1/2 pound of 8-8-8 fertilizer. Pinch off runners and daughter plants. For winter protection cover the plants with a thick layer of pine needles and remove the next spring when growing begins.
From now on, all your patch needs is to be kept free of weeds, allow a few daughter plants to become established to take the place of older plants, fertilize in June and September after berries have been harvested and keep the area watered when rainfall is not adequate.

The potato salad I bought at a local deli (in a grocery store) appeared awfully warm. I was afraid to eat it. Are deli operators supposed to keep these foods cold?
Mrs. R. R. Atlanta Yes, hot foods hot and cold foods cold. During regular inspections, our sanitarians test storage conditions of food for both hot and cold requirements. If you will phone us the location in question, we will investigate.
