FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture 7\ Market Bulletin Volume 67, Numbers Ag Engineers Play Major Role Water, energy and mechanization are keys to the successful food chain in America and agricultural engineers are responsible for the continuing availability, the operational efficiency, and the efficacious usage of these ingredients. The application of engineering technology to the production and processing of food and fiber is most effective when there is close cooperation with agricultural scientists. This is the reason Agricultural Engineering is a part of the College of Agriculture rather than a unit of the Georgia Institute of Technology. (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Robert H. Brown, Jr., Chairman Agricultural Engineering Division, University of Georgia, College of Agriculture, Athens 30602 and President of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.)____________ Engineering applied to agriculture can be very basic, excitingly practical, and frequently more highly sophisticated and complex than most imagine. The University of Georgia's agricultural engineering program is nationally recognized for its accountability in providing engineering answers for the agriculture of the state, for the appropriateness of its research, for the quality and number of its graduates, and for its leadership in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. The University's agricultural engineers probably make their greatest contribution in the classroom. Education and research are effectively coordinated in the five research goals of agricultural engineering from 1980-85. I. Reduce petroleum consumption in production agriculture by 50 percent. In Athens, Tifton and Griffin, data is being collected from instrumented tractors to determine how much energy would be required to produce and harvest a crop. Energy for irrigation is being studied and will be reduced via lower pressure sprinklers, conservation and careful selection of irrigation dates for particular crops, and by selecting the time of application (maybe at night) to reduce (Continued On Page 11) FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, January 21, 1981 Farmland Edition Coming Soon Farm Survival Do Usual Jobs Unusually Well The spring farmland edition of the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN will be published March 18. I have tried the manufacturer and they have discontinued this model and no longer have parts for it. I sure would like to get a top so I can use my pressure cooker. William Cousins P.O. Box 1233 Reidsville, Ga. 30453 Dear Editor: I would like to get in touch with anyone who has anything to do with catfish, raising, hauling, processing, etc. Please contact me. J.R.Nix Catfish Research 1110 Second Aven ue West Point, Ga. 31823 Dear Editor: I used to have roach bugs and water bugs but a friend told me how to kill them and it works. Get small jars of boric acid in powder or crystal form. Place around and behind washer, stove, hot water heater and in bath room behind commode and clothes basket. Take a teaspoon and put powder where you have seen bugs in dark and damp places. Use about four jars to start. Then two jars each six months. This powder is clean, odorless and safe. Bugs will disappear in a few weeks. Fletcher Briscoe 104 Royston Homes Royston, Georgia 30662 Dear Editor: I have been reading the MARKET BULLETIN for over 40 years. I enjoy it so much. I want to share my method of grating coconut. I just finished grating one and not one scratch of the fingers. When the pieces get too small to hold, I stick a fork in them, turn the fork over and press firmly as you grate. Use the grate near the bottom when grating the small pieces. Ouida Daniel P.O. Fox 126 Cave Spring, Ga. 30124 Dear Editor: Can any of your readers help me find someone that sells kerosene stoves, not heaters. I mean one with an oven. Mildred Holdridge Route 4, Box 628 Newnan, Ga. 30263 Dear Editor: Regarding your request for information about a smooth-mouthed mule, this refers to an animal over 12 years of age. When young, horses and mules have grooves or pits in the grinding surface of the front teeth. These are used to determine the age. As the animal grows old, the grooves wear away so that by an average of 12 years the teeth are smooth. Dr. J. T. Bryson Route 1, Box 55 Washington, Ga. 30673 FARM INCOME FOOD PRICES Net farm income this year will be $23 to $25 billion. That is down 20 to 25 percent from the $31 billion in 1979. Food prices are expected to go up 10 to 15 percent in 1981, say economists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
