Quarter Horses
Registered American Quarter Horses are an important crop in Georgia's agricultural economy. According to the American Quarter Horse Association, approximately 17,000 registered Quarter Horses are owned by persons living in Georgia. According to a survey conducted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, Quarter Horses are the most popular breed in the State, outnumbering the next most popular breed by better than a two to one margin.
Georgia horsemen use Quarter Horses on farms and ranches and
enjoy them for personal and family recreation. The breeding of Quarter Horses in the State is growing rapidly and the American Quarter Horse Breeders of Georgia is an organization dedicated to promoting Georgiabred horses and improving the market for their product. On September 20,6 pm, the Association will hold its fifth annual Breeders Production Sale at Wills Park in Alpharetta. This sale is limited to consignments which are owned by Georgia members and is a nonprofit sale dedicated to offering a market that is fair to both buyers and sellers.
Approximately 45 lots will be offered this year, including top quality weanlings and yearlings, trained riding horses, show prospects, and breeding stock.
The Breeders Sale has earned an exceptional reputation for integrity since all horses are carefully screened for quality and soundness. The

Newcastle Threatens Ga. Poultry Industry

birds that may have been exposed to Exotic Newcastle disease were shipped into Georgia by a Miami pet

As 1980 Drought Continues sent to county agents for distribution
in early October.
The bait is being distributed to the public to provide relief from fire ants to as many Georgians as possible.
According to Commissioner Irvin, "We have no aerial applications planned at this time. If any are un-
dertaken, it will be for the purpose of testing and determining the ef-
fectiveness of the bait." The bait is made of soybean oil and corn grits.
Worker ants will carry the bait to the mound, where other workers and the queen will feed. When the
queen dies, reproduction in the colony will stop.
Commissioner Irvin emphasized
that extensive testing has shown the material does not persist or accum-
ulate in the environment. Amdro was given conditional registration
by the Environmental Protection Agency in August.
As Georgia farmers continue to suffer from this year's devastating drought, loss predictions exceed $700 million by many agriculture experts.
It's time for the 1980 Harvest Ball. The day-long program October 24th at the Atlanta Hilton is sponsored by the Georgia Agribusiness Council in
cooperation with agricultural organizations of Georgia.
The 1980 "Miss Georgia Agriculture" will be crowned during the
evening activities. For information and tickets call or

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin says "The outlook is extremely bad in most areas of the state, with no realistic way to determine where the situation will level off."
The Commissioner says virtually every commodity in the state has been either heavily damaged or severely hurt by the dry conditions, sending hundreds and maybe thousands of farmers toward bankruptcy.
Bob Blalock, State Director of the Farmers' Home Administration says his organization will use all the tools

Dear Editor: In response to the man who wrote about double
yolk eggs in Ag Consumer Line, I have 21 "Sears Mini Layers" that were hatched the week of February 18. They are solid white and I get one double yolk egg every week.
The "double yolker" was one of the first to start laying. I need, however, a "Sears Mini Rooster". I didn't get one in the batch.

Dear Editor. I've heard that your in-
laws talk about you a lot if your Mother-in-law plant grows. Mine grew fast and bloomed this summer, a first for me.
Just wondered if any of your readers have ever seen one in bloom. They are very pretty but have no odor. I like to think that my in-laws really love me. Myrtle Moore Route 4, Box 202 Cochran, Ga. 31014
Dear Editor: I am looking for 20 to 30 persons who enjoy chew-
ing tobacco to enter a tobacco-spitting contest. The contest will be held October 4, 1980, in conjunction with the Oktoberfest [bazaar] to aid Hi-Hope Training Center for the Mentally Retarded Citizens, Lawrenceville. There is no entry fee.

Dear Editor: The other day while I was painting a table, I acci-
dentally tilted the can of paint and it completely covered my left hand. I didn't have anything that I could remove the paint with so I tried cooking oil.
I was very surprised and glad to find that it removed every trace of the paint.
Mrs. A. J.Norrell 1774 Cooper Lake Drive Smyrna, Georgia 30080
Dear Editor: This is to ask anyone about the herbs such as
yellow root, etc. which are advertised in the MARKET BULLETIN. I would like to know how to prepare them for medicinal purposes. Also what they are supposed to be good for.
Mrs. R. Jackson 1904 Rockbridge Road Conyers, Ga. 30207
Dear Editor: Soon we are going to a rugged vacation cabin in
southern Florida. We have had it 11 years and not until the past two years have we had this problem. Each time anyone visits, they report the place is invaded with lizards. I wrote the University of Gainesville, Florida, and they could not give me much help. Surely, there must be some way to rid the place of them.

sale also has a record of an unusually high percentage of actual
sales. On'September 21 Wills Park in
Alpharetta will again be the site of a new undertaking to promote Georgia-bred horses. The first annual Breeders Futurity is a show limited to young horses who are sired by stallions who participated in recent AQHBG Stallion Service
Auctions. Only offspring of these stallions
may be shown and be eligible for Futurity Awards totalling over $4,000. The classes will consist of halter or conformation classes for weanlings and yearlings, Get of Sire classes and performance classeswestern pleasure, English pleasure, and reining-limited to two- and three-year-old horses.
In addition to the Futurity purses themselves, $2,500 has been set aside for Sire Awards which will be paid to stallion owners based on the winnings of the get of their individual stallion.
The American Quarter Horse Breeders of Georgia is also committed to education to assist their members produce better quality horses at lower price. They strive to educate horse buyers and the general public to better participate in equine sports and manage horses effectively.
In this area the Georgia breeders have supported outstanding out-ofstate speakers in the Horse Breeders Short Courses conducted annually by the Georgia Cooperative Exten-
sion Service. The Georgia breeders also host an
annual field day which consists of educational programs and demonstrations, a horse judging contest for youth and adults, and the annual Stallion Service Auction. This event is held in February each year and rotates to various locations within
the State. Georgia has a tremendous oppor-
tunity to become one of the leading states for the breeding of top quality Quarter Horses. The achievements of Georgia-bred and owned horses
are a source of great pride. It is difficult to single out such achievements without overlooking other equally important ones, but a few examples are worth considering.
In Quarter Horse racing a Georgia-bred trained and owned filly named Miss Jet Eternal won the $74,000 Pompano Playland Futurity held at Pompano Park in Florida last month. This filly's sire Panama Jet is owned by Lewis Beasley of Metter.
Georgia-bred horses have also placed high nationally in the National Cutting .Horse Futurity and the NCHA Derby. The only finalists from the Southeast out of over 450 entries in the 1979 NCHA Futurity in Fort Worth was Miss Sujo, a filly trained by John Starrak of Sylvandale Farms in Plains and currently owned by W.S. Morris III of Augusta.
Stallions currently standing in Georgia have sired more finalists in the National Reining Horse Futurity held at the All American Quarter Horse Congress in Ohio than stallions from any other state. Georgia-bred horses have also won national honors recently in western pleasure, reining, and youth activities.
Because of Georgia's favorable climate for raising horses outdoors, it is possible to raise better athletes at a lower cost in Georgia than in most other areas. The American Quarter Horse Breeders of Georgia believe that horse breeders-large and small-need to work together to promote their fine product and to educate buyers and owners to improve their market.
Public Hearing
There will be a public hearing (as required by the "Georgia Agricultural Commodities Promotion Act"), section 12 (b) (1) on a proposed amendment to Marketing Order No. 1 for Milk at 10 a.m., October 22, 1980, in Conference Room 201, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia.
For Sunbelt Expo
The Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition will be back for the third year, October 14, 15, and 16 at Spence Field, Moultrie. The Sunbelt Expo has proven itself to be an unquestionable success in the farm show circuit and in the hearts of agribusiness families and farmers, with the latest and most extensive display of ag products, equipment, and technology available.
The most noticeable change at the 1980 Expo will be the addition of the Sunbelt Shuttle Service - a system devised to move visitors around the perimeter of the 80 acre exhibit area, and to and from the harvesting and tillage, and plot, demonstrations all 600 acres.
There is a charge of $1.00 for two round trips, still the only fee other than food at Expo. With the expansion of field demos to include the 150 acres east of the active runway, the shuttle system is a definite plus!
Other changes and activities to look for at Sunbelt:
The five food tents, previously situated throughout the exhibit area, are now placed at strategic points on the edge of the exhibit area. Shuttle service routes correspond to the relocated stands. Food fare will expand this year.
There will be plenty of sitting room for weary walkers - 90 park benches located throughout the site.
Lots of new faces and languages, several international tour groups, among them German, Western Europe, and in fact from all over the world, are planning to see Sunbelt and the South.
Entertainment will feature the best from last year and exciting new performances guaranteed to delight all.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle, the entertaining and givingaway, the objective of the Sunbelt Agriculture Exposition remains constant. To give the agribusiness and farmer an education - that's the big events' reason to be. Come see for yourself.
The 1980 Cotton Pickin' Arts and Crafts Fair will be held October 4 and 5 at Gay. The fair is open from 10 am to 7 pm. Admission $2 adults, children free. One of the craftsmen appearing at the fair is John Reeves, Gainesville. Mr. Reeves came to the fair several years ago to demon strate basket weaving, a hobby which now keeps him busy year round filling orders for handmade baskets.

Drunkard's Path Once you have learned to use your compass, you can make many quilts, including the ever popular and varied Drunkard's Path. This design can be constructed in many interesting patterns, all unique and spectacular quilt tops. Fold square of paper into the basic four patch design and open out. Place the compass point on the corner of the paper and draw an arc. Repeat at each corner. Color your pattern pieces and cut them out. By arranging them in different ways, new quilt designs are possible.
THE MARKET BULLETIN
Save Supermarket Dollars; Be an Educated Shopper
An alert, informed shopper will spend at least 15 percent less on each weekly shopping bill than one who doesn't care or is not informed. Anyone can
stretch their supermarket dollars by developing and improving shopping skills.
Here are six cost cutters to help consumers get the most for their food dollar.
Buy when the price is right. Buy items on special rather than at their regular price. Look at the newspaper food ads for the week and mark the specials on items you need. Substantial savings can be gained from the 200-300 items on sale each year in grocery stores.
When the price is right, buy in quantity. Buy often-used nonperishable items in quantities that will last until the next time the price is right. When your grocery bill falls below your food budget, put aside the extra money for specials later. Remember extra food can be stored outside the kitchen in any cool, dry place.
Compare price and size to get the lowest cost per unit. Usually the larger the size the lower the cost per unit. Take advantage of this as often as possible. However, buy a size your family will not waste because of boredom or spoilage.
Shop hi at least two competing stores. Shopping in two stores usually is cheaper than buying everything in just one. Save money by getting the best buys at both stores. And, driving a few extra miles each week will be offset by the money you save.
Combine the trip with some other activity to save time and gas. It is unnecessary to shop two stores everyday. A better shopper buys groceries once a week.
Plan your meals around the weekly meat specials. More money is spent on meat, poultry and fish than any other food category and stores usually feature several in their weekly specials.
It is important to plan your spending in the grocery store. If you don't manage your money, your money will manage you. The average homemaker will shop more than 30 years, spending at least $100,000. This is big business, and it's your business to get the most for your money.

In fertilizing your fescue, add about 1/2 pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet for each favorable growing month. This amounts to about six to eight pounds of total nitrogen per 1000 square feet per year. It should be applied hi a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio of garden fertilizer.
Liming is also important since nitrogen causes soil acidity. Take a
soil sample every year or so to determine how much lime is needed. Figure about 20-25 pounds of agricultural lime per 1000 square feet.

available to keep as many of Georgia's farmers in business as possible.
"FmHA is critically aware of the seriousness of the situation, and will explore all feasible avenues of financial assistance," Blalock said. "Each case will be carefully examined on an individual need and merit basis with FmHA pledging its full cooperation," he continued.
O. Cecil Smith, Acting Head of the Georgia Extension Service's Farm Management Department, says the real impact of the drought's effect on the economy will not be felt until farmer-borrowers and lenders make decisions as to whether another year would be a "worthwhile risk."
Smith and other economists say that the crop loss will be felt at the grocery store very soon.
However, he says the real drought's effect on consumer prices probably will not be known until Christmas.
Commissioner Irvin says the total dollar impact of this year's drought, which struck not only Georgia, but many other rich agricultural areas, is still an unknown factor.
