FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvi'n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 66, Number 36 Butoimtfe Georgia Bred Quarter Horses Registered American Quarter Horses are an important crop in Georgia's agricultural economy. According to the American Quarter Horse Association, approximately 17,000 registered Quarter Horses are owned by persons living in Georgia. According to a survey conducted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, Quarter Horses are the most popular breed in the State, outnumbering the next most popular breed by better than a two to one margin. Georgia horsemen use Quarter Horses on farms and ranches and enjoy them for personal and family recreation. The breeding of Quarter Horses in the State is growing rapidly and the American Quarter Horse Breeders of Georgia is an organization dedicated to promoting Georgiabred horses and improving the market for their product. The upcoming Breeders Sale and Breeders Futurities sponsored by (Our guest columnist this week is Richard Butterworth, President, The American Quarter Horse Breeders of Georgia, 882 White- heod Rood, Sugar Hill'30518.)______ this group are good examples of the breeders' ability to work together to promote their product. On September 20,6 pm, the Association will hold its fifth annual Breeders Production Sale at Wills Park in Alpharetta. This sale is limited to consignments which are owned by Georgia members and is a nonprofit sale dedicated to offering a market that is fair to both buyers and sellers. Approximately 45 lots will be offered this year, including top quality weanlings and yearlings, trained riding horses, show prospects, and breeding stock. The Breeders Sale has earned an exceptional reputation for integrity since all horses are carefully screened for quality and soundness. Poultry Industry Last week more than 50 imported birds that may have been exposed to Exotic Newcastle disease were shipped into Georgia by a Miami pet farm. The seven shipments coming into Atlanta, Columbus and Albany were part of some 22,000 birds Pet Farm, Inc. of Miami has shipped to more than 300 stores in more than 30 states. State Department of Agriculture officials, working with U. S. This was the first time a shipment of this nature had originated at the S avannah facility. The wheat was grown in Georgia, the Carolines and Florida with 90 percent produced in our state. The Savannah Port saves Georgia farmers considerable tune and money hi have isolated all of the birds shipped into Georgia and are in the process of destroying them. The bait is being distributed to the public to provide relief from fire ants to as many Georgians as possible. According to Commissioner Irvin, "We have no aerial applications planned at this time. If any are un- dertaken, it will be for the purpose of testing and determining the ef- fectiveness of the bait." The bait is made of soybean oil and corn grits. Worker ants will carry the bait to the mound, where other workers and the queen will feed. When the queen dies, reproduction in the colony will stop. Commissioner Irvin emphasized that extensive testing has shown the material does not persist or accum- ulate in the environment. Amdro was given conditional registration by the Environmental Protection Agency in August. As Georgia farmers continue to suffer from this year's devastating drought, loss predictions exceed $700 million by many agriculture experts. It's time for the 1980 Harvest Ball. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin says "The outlook is extremely bad in most areas of the state, with no realistic way to determine where the situation will level off." The Commissioner says virtually every commodity in the state has been either heavily damaged or severely hurt by the dry conditions, sending hundreds and maybe thousands of farmers toward bankruptcy. They are solid white and I get one double yolk egg every week. The "double yolker" was one of the first to start laying. I need, however, a "Sears Mini Rooster". I didn't get one in the batch. Carolyn Avery Route 6,119 Cooper Street Albany, Ga. 317Q5 Dear Editor. I've heard that your in- laws talk about you a lot if your Mother-in-law plant grows. Mine grew fast and bloomed this summer, a first for me. Just wondered if any of your readers have ever seen one in bloom. They are very pretty but have no odor. I like to think that my in-laws really love me. Myrtle Moore Route 4, Box 202 Cochran, Ga. 31014 Dear Editor: I am looking for 20 to 30 persons who enjoy chew- ing tobacco to enter a tobacco-spitting contest. The contest will be held October 4, 1980, in conjunction with the Oktoberfest [bazaar] to aid Hi-Hope Training Center for the Mentally Retarded Citizens, Lawrenceville. There is no entry fee. Mrs. I. Lamar Maffett, Jr. Chairman, Oktoberfest Hi-Hope Center 882 Hi-Hope Road Lawrenceville, Georgia 30245 Dear Editor: The other day while I was painting a table, I acci- dentally tilted the can of paint and it completely covered my left hand. I didn't have anything that I could remove the paint with so I tried cooking oil. I was very surprised and glad to find that it removed every trace of the paint. Mrs. A. J.Norrell 1774 Cooper Lake Drive Smyrna, Georgia 30080 Dear Editor: This is to ask anyone about the herbs such as yellow root, etc. which are advertised in the MARKET BULLETIN. I would like to know how to prepare them for medicinal purposes. Also what they are supposed to be good for. Mrs. R. Jackson 1904 Rockbridge Road Conyers, Ga. 30207 Dear Editor: Soon we are going to a rugged vacation cabin in southern Florida. We have had it 11 years and not until the past two years have we had this problem. Each time anyone visits, they report the place is invaded with lizards. I wrote the University of Gainesville, Florida, and they could not give me much help. Surely, there must be some way to rid the place of them. J.S.
