tobacco quality so that they may share in

_ the increasing world trade in tobacco.

Exports of U. S. flue - cured tobac-
co during the 1962-63 marketing year de-

clined 53 million pounds, or 11 percent, |

from the preceding marketing year. Buy-
ers for foreign users explained that they

_ were unable to find the.types and grades
they wanted in the 1962 crop in suffi-

cient quantities. Increased activity by ex-
port buyers on the markets this year in-
dicates an increase in exports during the
current marketing year. Further increases
in exports in the years ahead are in pros-
pect if farmers continue to improve the

~ quality of U.S. tobacco,
Lanier also announced that the dis- ~

count variety program on flue-cured to-
bacco will continue in effect on the 1964

crop. Under this program, discount va-

rieties are supported at one-half the sup-
port for other varieties.

The 1964-crop support evel will be
announced early next year. As directed
by legislation governing the tobacco price
support under a marketing quota pro-
gram, the level of support for the 1964
crop will be based on the 1959-crop level
of support (55.5 cents per pound) adjust-

_ed in-direct proportion to any change in

the price of things farmers buy. The 1963-
crop support level was pe: 6 cents per
pound.

' Marketing quotas for flue-cured to-
bacco were approved for the 1962, 1963,
and 1964 crops by 98.1 percent of the
growers voting i in a referendum held Dec.
12, 1961.

Wool Growers Urged
To Keep Good Records
For Incentive Program

Wool growers should remember to
keep adequate records of lamb sales so
that they will be able to make proper ap-
plications for payment under the wool
incentive program, according to W. H.
Booth, Chairman, Georgia Agricultural
Stabilization and Conservation State
Committee. :

The sales record for lambs sold should

-include the name of the buyer, his sig-

nature, and the number and liveweight
of lambs sold, plus the description un-
shorn. Lamb payments are made only
on lambs that have never been shorn, to
discourage unusual shearing of lambs
before selling.

The Chairman also reminds growers
that current marketings of wool and lamb
through Dec. 31, 1963, will qualify for
incentive payments under the wool pro-
gram for the 1963 marketing year. (In
previous years, the marketing year end-
ed March 31.) Beginning in 1964, the
marketing year will be the calendar year.

Growers are urged to file their appli-
cations for payment, supported by the re-
quired sales documents, with their ASCS
County Office as soon as possible after
their fall sales are completed. While the
final date to apply for payments on 1963

-marketings will be January 31 of next

yearcovering marketings of wool and
lambs from April 1, 1963, through Dec.
31, 1963an application may be submit-
ted at any time between now and then.

Booth said that lamb feeders parti-
cularly should keep accurate records

which will establish the length of time

they have owned lambs on which they ap-
ply for payment. Lamb payments are
made only on lambs which a producer has
owned for 30 .days or more, and the
amount of payment is based on weight
gain of the lambs during the sellers own-
ership.

Good Winter Feeding
Lowers Cattle Deaths

._ A good winter feeding program for
brood cows will help reduce death losses
of the calves and cows, say Extension Ser-
vice animal husbandmen. It also will im-
prove the general health of cattle and
resistance to parasites and disease, wean
heavier calves, increase reproduction ef-
ficiency, and make more profit.
