Q. Can I take care of my
while fallout is at a dangerous level?

Questions and Answers

Rural Civil Defence

By HAROLD V. CLUM

Rural Civil Defense Specialist
Cooperative Extension Service
University of Georgia

Q. After an atomic bomb explodes,

how soon is fallout dangerous?

A. It will take nearly a half-hour for

the larger fallout particles to come back
to earth near the explosion. It will take
somewhat longer downwind. How long
will depend on distance from the ex-
plosion and upon wind and weather con-
ditions.

Q. Is fallout dangerous to animals as

well to people?

A. Yes. Radiation is dangerous to all

living things because it will kill living
cells by ionization. Cattle and poultry
can stand a little more radiation than
humans.

Q. Should my livestock be protected

from fallout, too?

A. Yes. Even though the survival of

people is most important, it is also im-
portant that farmers make plans to use
what resources they have for the pro-
tection of their livestock and also their
feed and water supplies. They will need
to be able to resume production as soon
as possible. The foundation or best breed=-
ing stock should have the best protection.

livestock

A. Yes. If adequate plans and pre-

parations have been made, you will be
able to work outside for a limited time.
You might not be able to go out at =
for the first day or two.

Q. Who should go out of the shelter

in an emergency?

A. The older persons are more resis-=

tant to exposure.

Q. Are community or family fallout

shelters best?

A. Both are needed. ach family and

each community should carefully evalu-
ate their situation and resources and then
make plans to develop these facilities for
maximum possible protection.
