fheat Growers Vote
Program, May 21
By W. L. LANIER
tate Executive Director
ASCS State Offica
May 21, 1963, wheat growers will
ke an important decision regard-
wheat program in 1964. Wheat
il be eligible to vote in the re-
m provided they indicate their
ions by May 13. This is done by
reverse side of the allotment
nd returning it to the ASCS
Office by May 13. Wheat grow-
arms with allotments of 15 acres
are not required to sign in order
igible to vote on May 21.
1964 program is similar to that
in 1962 in several ways. Wheat
will be about the same. Many
will note little difference be-
his and the wheat programs in
ars. Their income from wheat land
L aintained at the 1961-62 level.
: 1ajor difference is the new two-
System of price support. A loan of
er bushel (National average) will
lable to eligible growers on 80
of the normal production of their
e allotment. All other
produced on their acreage

acreage in the more humid areas to soy
beans and other crops which would have
their presently favorable supply and de-
mand balance upset.
Regardless of the outcome of the re-
ferendum on May 21, there will be an-
other referendum in the spring of 1964
which would apply to the 1965 crop,
In summary, the wheat marketing
quota referendum on May 21 this year
will determine what program features
will apply to the 1964 crop. If quotas are
approved by at least two-thirds of those
voting, support prices will be $2.00 per
bushel (National average) for certificated
wheat and $1.30 per bushel (National
average) for non-certificated wheat for
those growers who participate in the pro-
gram. In addition, payments may be earn-
ed for diverting wheat land to conserva-
tion uses.
If quotas are not approved, there will
be no quotas, no payments, no certificates,
and price support will be available at 50
percent of parity (about $1.25 National
average), only for producers who plant
within their allotments. It is estimated
that without quotas, market prices for
wheat would average about $1.00 per
bushel.

EE A RIEGEL HOT ER SST TE
SICKNES
IN ANIMALS
The office of our state chemist frequently receives re-
quests to analyze samples of feed believed to contain sub-
stances causing sickness or death in farm animals or poultry.
These requests come from people such as the farmer, a
county agent, a veterinarian, etc., and quite often have yery
little information for us to proceed on.
In order for the state chemist to intelligently tackle
such a problem, he needs certain information,
First of all,
before a sample of such feed is sent, a veterinarian should be
consulted, In case of death, an autopsy should be performed
to determine whether death was caused by a disease or a toxic
substance. In the experience of the state chemists office,
the feed is rarely ever to blame.
If the veterinarian decides that it is a toxic substance, he
should indicate what he thinks it is. Otherwise, the chemis-
try laboratory may run numerous tests and still not hit on the
right one.
In addition to the veterinary report, the feed
guarantee tag should always be enclosed with the sample.
Quite often there are various drugs added which are toxic if
the levels are too high,

back to earth. In addition to radioactive
elements, this material contains alpha,

Q. What is radiation?
A. In seeking protection from atomic
fallout, we are concerned mostly with
three types of radiation. These are alpha
and beta particles and gamma rays. The
beta particles are fast moving electrons
given off when neutrons in the nucleus of
an element splits free. The alpha particles
made up of protons and
electrons missing are much larger and
only move about 20,000 miles per second,
but they leave ionized atoms in their path.
Gamma rays are not particles but behave
much like light or more like X-rays of
high frequency. Gamma rays move at the
speed of light and with a wave motion.
We are familiar with different types of
electromagnetic radiation.
ference is the frequency or wavelength.

GOING UP IN SMOKE
The number of forest fires increased
in Georgia in the first quarter of 1963.
March was the smokiest month, with al-
most 2,300 fires. This is twice the num-
ber reported in March, 1962. Ted Walker,
Extension forester at the University of
Georgia, says the Georgia Forestry Com-
mission and forest industry fire fighters
have kept the size of the fires quite small.
Fires so far this year have averaged only
5.0 acres.
EVERY BITE?
Every bite you eat, say Cooperative
Extension Service nutritionists, is a part
of your food plans and should contribute
to the three big jobs foods must do: (1)
provide materials for growth and repair
of the body, (2) help regulate body pro-
cesses and help it to run smoothly, and
(3) furnish energy and to help keep the
body warm.
