Z Contract farming, as listed above, has built the
ultry industry in Georgia. The poultry industry in
Georgia could not and would not have achieved its
P esent huge size without contract farming. This is
true because enough individual farmers could not have
anced themselves or managed the sale of this pro-
in the market place.

_ Everyone in Georgia, including the farmers who are
ducing the other commodities listed above, is proud
nendously efficient poultry industry which has

Federal controls on. production

because contract farming is good for the poultry indus-
try does not mean that it would be beneficial to tobacco,
peanuts, milk, and possibly several other commodities,
Were it not for the Federal Farm Program which gives
production controls and price supports to these pro-
ducts, they would be converted in a very short period
to contract farming, which would be disasterous to the
producers of these products.

Certain other products, such as produce and fruit,
as listed above, could very probably be benefited from
an increase in contract farmingin these areas.

Federal Price Support Programs, in my opinion,
would not be beneficial to livestock farming, the pro-
duction of perishable crops and certain other enter-
prises. Each commodity produced by farmers in Georgia
and in the United States has its own peculiarities with
regard to production and marketing which makes it
impossible to have one system of production and mar-
keting suitable to all commodities. Consequently, vari-
ous systems have evolved, as listed above, dependent
upon the peculiarities of production and marketing of
each product.

Traditionally, the producers of an individual pro-
duct have not interfered with or tried to influence the
type system under which other farmers are producing
other commodities. It is my hope that in the future,
spokesmen for yarious commodities will confine them-
selves to discussions involving their particular commodi-
ty onlyrather than issuing statements and opinions
across the board which will have an adverse effect upon
commodities with which they have no connection.
