less important to wildlife, surveys show.
Percentages being treated annually are:
15 percent of 457 million acres classed as
urban or built-up. The most heavily
treated crops are fruits and nuts (80 per-
cent of 2.8 million acres); cotton (75 per-
cent of 15.8 million); and vegetables (50
_ percent of 2 million.)
The report also places the total weight
of insecticidal chemicals (active ingredi-
ents only) being used annually in the
U S. at 225 million pounds and estimates
that 75 percent of this amount is being
applied to less than two percent of the
land.
Of the total, all but 4.4 million pounds
is applied on lands considered to be less
important to wildlife,
cates. Farmers and ranchers use 164.8
million pounds a year for strictly agricul-
tural protection, and at least 55.7 million
pounds are used in urban and built-up
areas for a variety of purposes. Home-
owners, alone, use 45 million pounds a
year to protect their homes, and posses-
-sions and their health and comfort from
insects.
Agricultural uses break down as fol- |
lows in the report: 6.2 million pounds on
vegetable crops; 15.8 million pounds on
- fruit and nut crops; 32.4 million pounds
on grain crops; 90 million pounds on
cotton; 10.3 million pounds on hay, seed
crops, peanuts, sugar crops, soybeans,
flax and other crops not identified; 2.1

Oats For Seed, Feed
"_-HUGH A, INGLIS
Extension Agronomisi-Seed Certification
There is a big difference in the kind
of oat seed that farmers will plant this
fall both for grain and grazing and farm-
ers should be aware of the high standards
required for certified oat seed.
When Helminthosporium blight or-
ganisms are present, farmers may get as
much as 30 bushels more of oats per acre
if they will treat their seed to control
this disease. It is important that all oat
seed be properly treated at least two
days before the seed are planted.
Farmers that are having trouble with
poor quality oat seed should ask the local
seed dealer for Georgia Certified oat
seed. Be sure to demand that seed are
treated to control diseases that kill small |
oat plants, especially when planting ear-
ly. These sed will cost more, but remem-~
_ ber that good yields pay better profits.
A number of farmers have been pur-
chasing FEED oats and using them for
seed purposes. If a farmer purchases feed
oats which are sold strictly as FEED oats
and labeled accordingly, he has no re-
course if the oats fail to produce a single
plant.
In order for the state to protect pur- -
chases, the farmer must use the oats as
they are labeled. If, on the other hand,
you purchase SEED oats and plant them
and they dont come up, you do have re=-
course as long as you save your label and
bill of sale with lot number on it.
million pounds on livestock; and 7.8 mil-
lion pounds on farm buildings and struc-
: tures.
It is well known that insects cause
losses worth at least $4 billion annually
to agriculture.
Details of how the 4.4 million pounds
applied in areas considered of less im-
portance to wildlife are used follow: 1.7
million pounds in forest lands; 2.5 mil-
lion pounds applied to open salt or fresh
water swampland for mosquito control;
and 200,000 pounds for control of grass-
hoppers and Mormon crickets on western
rangeland.

mological Society of America, 4603 Cal-
