Grow Your Own
Tobacco Plants

Three serious diseases still threaten
the South Georgia tobacco industry,

Black Shank, Tobacco Etch Mosaic and
Potato Y Veinbanding Disease.

Every effort is being made to protect
farmers from the sale of diseased tobac-
co plants but farmers can insure them-
selves of the best possible protection by
growing their own plants.

Make sure any plants purchased lo-

cally or otherwise are grown on land
free of Black Shank.

Do not take chances on contaminat-
ing your land by losing money with di-
seased tobacco. Get the necessary infor-

mation from your County Agent and

grow your own tobacco plants this year.

cal

ae Per salt
Income Ranks High

(The following is an excerpt from a

speech made by Governor Vandiver this

week. As I have for some time been con-

cerned about statements that erroneous-

ly classify Georgia as a poor or low
income state, I was happy to see Gov-
ernor Vandiver bring the true facts to
light in a recent meeting of state busi-
ness and political leaders.

So that all citizens may have the S
benefit of his remarks and know the

facts about how Georgia compares with

other states in the Southeast in per cap-

ita income, I am reprinting a portion of Be
the Governors recent speech. Phil Camp-

bell)

Governor Vandiver, addressing the

first of a series of legislative Eggs and
Issues breakfasts, attacked the po :

of doom in these words:

I am tired of hearing people poor

mouth about Georgias per capita income. |
These pessimists misrepresent it for var-
ious unworthy reasons.

Actually, we stand well indeed in

our region of the country, Only Virgin-
ia. with its fat federal payroll, and Flo-
rida, with its harvest of tourist gold,
stand above Georgia in the entire South-
east.

The Southeastern average, the Gov-
ernor said, is $1,607.

Georgia stands exactly one dollar
above that average, he continued. Be-
neath Georgia are Louisiana, North Ca-
rolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama,
South Carolina and Mississippi.

Of course, we are working in every
possible way to pull up the
average.

In the past three years we have
brought in 302 new industries, and 271
plant expansions, capitalized at $400,-
000,000, and providing jobs for almost
20,000 workers.

The office of our state chemist frequently receives re-
quests to analyze samples of feed believed to contain sub-
stances causing sickness or death in farm animals or poultry.

These requests come from people such as the farmer, a
county agent, a veterinarian, etc., and quite often have very
little information for us to proceed on.

In order for the state chemist to intelligently tackle
such a problem, he needs certain information.
before a sample of such feed is sent, a veterinarian should be
consulted. In case of death, an autopsy should be performed
to determine whether death was caused by a disease or a toxic

substance. In the experience of the state chemists office,
the feed is rarely ever to blame.

If the veterinarian decides that it is a toxic substance, he
should indicate what he thinks it is. Otherwise, the chemis-
try laboratory may run numerous tests and still not hit on the
In addition to the veterinary report, the feed
guarantee tag should always be enclosed with the sample.
Quite often there are various drugs added which are toxic if
the levels are too high.
