Commissioner
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, MAY 31, 1961 NUMBER 83
MADGE'S CHOLERA BIL
Talmadge pointed out that a aaa
eradication program has already been
successful in Canada. The only time
there is cholera in Canada now is when
it is imported from the United States.
Although many states have taken
steps to stamp out the disease on their
own and others have expressed an in-
terest in the program, Talmadge pointed
out that a Federal program would be need-
ed to control the interstate movement of
hogs to prevent spread of the disease into
states where it has been eradicated.
Seven other senators joined Talmadge -
in introducing the bill. Introduction of
the same bill in the House is expected.
If passed and money is appropriated to
finance the program, Georgia farmers
can look forward to a cholera free state.
Under Talmadges proposal, the cost
of the eradication program would be
shared on a fund matching program by
the federal government and the individ-
ual states.
Indemnity payments would be made
to farmers who lost animals due to chol-
era. These payments would be made on
a fifty-fifty basis by the federal and state
governments.
In introducing his bill, Talmadge
pointed out that hog cholera is the most
_ Serious disease confronting hog producers
of the country.
It is estimated that cholera costs the
nations farmers about 50 million dollars
a year. In addition, eleven countries now
prohibit or restrict the importation of
American pork because of cholera.
ntroduced a bill in the U. S.
the nation-wide eradication of
isease costs Georgia farmers
hundred thousand dollars each
ator Talmadge is to be com-
or his efforts to secure federal
that would eliminate cholera
ia and every other state.
