rertilize Trees Now
Growth Begins
R. L. Livingston, Head
nsion Horticulture Department
gi Agricultural Extension Service
Pecan trees will leaf out and be-
making terminal twig growth in just
days. Owners of this wonderful nut
uld fertilize them immediately if
ve not already done so. A pecan
that is producing nuts makes all of
terminal growth in early spring over
egins
Pecan trees need 3 pounds of a com-
ce fertilizer for each inch in trunk
meter. There are several fertilizer
des: that may be used, such as 5-10-15,
2-12, 4-12-12 or 8-8-8. Most trees should
e additional fertilizers in June if the
0 of nuts appears to be a heavy one.
ROSETTE AND ZINC SULFATE
Pecan trees that have numerous dead
gs are sick with a disease called roset-
s is zine sulfate (36 percent metalic
GROWTH BEGINS
UNG TREE Circle young trees with fer-
izers, beginning 6 inches out from trunk and
oadcast in a 2 foot wide band.

in trunk diameter to the soil beneath the
trees limb spread.
Pecan production should be good dur-
ing the current year in Georgia. Should
your trees set a large crop of nuts and if
you have not given them enough fertiliz-
er elements so they can manufacture the
necessary food to fill the nuts out and
mature them with high quality then the
quality will necessarily be low with the
nuts poorly filled and many of them may
fall from the trees in July and August.
As the total pecan production in the
United States increases, let us make sure
that Georgia gets her share. The pecan
is not native to Georgia, but it has found
a nice home here.

MATURE TREE Fertilizers should be broadcast under the tree, beginning 5 feet out
from the tree trunk and extending 5 feet beyond the length of limb spread. :
