(1) to produce large trees from small ones,
(2) to produce a good crop of nuts, both
from the standpoint of quality and yield,
(3) to produce the proper twig growth,
(4) to cause the leaves to remain green
and stay on the trees until the dormant
weather season occurs and (5) to prevent
deathpecan trees will eventually die
_ when fertilizers are with-held too long.
Growers should beware of liming pe-
ean soils without first having a soil test
made to determine the pH and lime re-
quirements. It is important that soils be
limed if the pH is below 5.5. Probably the
ideal pH is around 6.0. When lime is ap-
plied it is then necessary to apply zine
(zine sulfate).
Rosette is a condition in pecan trees
caused by the lack of zinc. Here are some
symptoms: (1) dead wood in tree tops,
particularly in the Stuart variety, (2)
defoliation, discoloring, and mottling of
leaves in tree tops, (3) numerous dead
twigs all over the tree, (4) young leaves |
that are small, yellow, curved and ripple
shaped, (5) small undersized nuts. Two
symptoms when the trees are dormant
are numerous dead twigs all over the
trees and leaves, leaf petioles, and nut
shucks remaining on trees several weeks
or months after the first killing frost.
To prevent rosette from developing,
you should apply zinc sulfate (36 percent
metallic zinc) on pecan soils. The zine
may be necessary even though oe soil
has never been limed.
For young trees apply zinc sulfate at
the rate of 1/2 pound for each year of
the trees age or for each inch in the
trunk diameter. This zine may be omit-
ted later in the trees life, depending on
the application of limestone and presence
of rosette.
If rosette is severe on sider trees, ap- - :
ply 10 to 15 pounds of zinc sulfate per
tree for correction and begin the follow-
ing year with a maintenance rate of 3 to
5 pounds per tree. This maintenance rate
will prevent rosette from recurring. Al-
most all pecan trees in Georgia are in
need of zinc sulfate.
Immediately after transplanting
young trees, prune 1/3 to 1/2 off the tops _
of the trees. During the next few years
very little pruning is necessary except
to keep lateral branches pruned off so
that the main scaffold system is not closer
than 4 feet to the soil surface and to re-
move one limb where two form a very
narrow crotch. Limbs that are crossing
over (growing in the wrong direction)
should be removed. All cuts should be
made close (flush) to laterals or the main
trunks leaving stubs will not allow
healing of the cut (exposed) area.
Producing trees usually need little
pruning except to lift them off the soil by
removing low limbs. There are some
trees that still have dead wood in them
as a result of the March 27 freeze of
1955. This wood may be removed by cut-
ting back to wood that is alive, however,
this is expensive. A good fertilization
program will cause the trees to grow out
of this condition. :
Stuart, Desirable, Farley and Elliot
are good varieties to plant in Georgia.
There as some patent varieties and new
varieties that are most likely good ones >
and should be planted on a trial basis.
Some other older varieties that may pos-
sibly do well in certain areas are Success,
Moneymaker, Curtis, Moore, Mahan, and
Van Deman.
