Scientists Discover How
Light Controls Plants
The triggering mechanism for all
plant development has just been found
by U. S. Department of Agriculture sci-
entists. The discovery promiss to be the
key to mans complete control of plant
growth from seed germination through
plant flowering and fruiting.
For scientists the discovery opens the
door to further research of this triggering
action to enable man to tailor-make plants
for his needs. Possible results are crops of
special heights for better harvesting,
flowering of plants at times convenient to
man, or for better control of plant pests.
Dr. Byron T. Shaw, Administrator of
USDAs Agricultural Research Service,
hails the discovery as an outstanding ba-
sie research achievement. It is the kind
of discovery envisioned when the Depart-
-ments new pioneering research labora-
tories were established. It provides means
for the better control of plant develop-
ment for specific purposes for better
food, fiber, and industrial raw material.
seed will be kept genetically pure so that
only good seed will get into the hands of
our farmers.
The $30,000 provided by Gov. Vandi-
ver will not do the complete job but it
gives us the necessary funds at this time
to get the program underway.
A program of this nature has been
needed in Georgia for some time and in
making money available to start the pro-
gram Gov. Vandiver has once again dem-
onstrated his interest in serving Georgia
farmers and agriculture in general.

Insects Cost Georgia
$10) Million Annually =
Insects cost Georgia farmers 100 mil- ee
lion dollars annually in damages and de-
struction, according to the Agricultural
Extension Service, :
Through the devastation they cause,
insects greatly affect the economy and
general welfare of all people. The amaz-
ing creatures pose a serious threat to the
dominant role enjoyed by man on earth
today. ae ; |
A majority of the most destructive in-
sects of North America are aliens. Be-
ginning with the discovery of this con-
tinent and continuing until the passage of |
the Federal Plant Quarantine Act of 1912, -
foreign pests hitchhiked on passenger and
cargo ships to this country. They are still
trying and occasionally succeeding
but our quarantine inspectors are proving
to be an effective barrier.
Grasshoppers, termites, mosquitoes, and
certain forest pests such as the spruce
budworm are among the native insects
that do extensive damage in this country,
but a big share of the annual $4 billion
dollar bill for destruction is caused by in-

Bring Court Sentences
Three persons have been sentenced to
12 months on probation for selling bad or
mislabeled pecans in defiance of a with-
hold order issued by a Department of Ag-
riculture inspector.
Judge Cecil Roddenberry of the Way-
cross Judicial Circuit imposed the probated
sentences upon W, F. Allen, Dorothy Thrift,
and Jessie Alston in Charlton County su-
perior court at Folkston.
The probated sentence constituted the
second court action against Allen who was
recently ordered to serve 20 days in jail or
pay a $150 fine on charges of selling bad
or mislabeled pecans in violation of a court |
injunction. .
The court action is a result of Depart-
ment efforts to cleen up the sale of in- -
ferior and mislabeled pecans along side
Georgia highways.

the bedding straw of the Hessians, who
were British paid soldiers sent here to
help quell the revolution.
