WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 1960 NUMBER 37

OVERNMENT ERROR COSTLY
Cranberry And Capon
Growers Get Help

_ By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner Of Agriculture

the government plans to offer it to
WORTHY STATE INSTITUTIONS
AND WELFARE AGENCIES FOR HU-
MAN CONSUMPTION. But then there
is no reason why they shouldntthere
is nothing wrong with the meat and it
is perfectly safe to eat. Even if it were
contaminated slightly a person would

have to eat several box car loads to be
affected.

In other words the Federal govern-
ment is now spending millions of dollars
in an effort to solve a situation ereated
unnecessarily by action that bordered on
stupidity. As in most such cases, the tax-
payer is having to pay for political ir-
responsibility, :

Biochemistry, School of Medicine, Van-
derbilt University, who serves as chair-
man of the Food Protection Committee
of the National Academy of Sciences is
quoted in Science Magazine of April 1,
1960, as follows:

This book is an all-time high in
blood-thirsty pen-pushing. It deals with
the important problem of chemical ad-
ditives but from the bias of the non-scien-
tific natural food-organic gardening cult
... The book is an irresponsible bid for
wide sales through sensationalism.

In the words of the United Fresh Fruit
and Vegetable Association as quoted in
The Packer, national fresh fruit and vege-
table industry newspaper, the poison pen
writers declare that foods, including
fruits and vegetables, contain added
chemicals and that one should avoid
chemicals the way a Communist avoids
a free election. They fail to mention that
all food is 100 per cent chemical and our
bodies also for we live in a chemical
world.

_ Although some of the hue and cry
_ over the cranberry and poultry contami-
nation farce has died down, the irrespon-
_ sible manner in which the situation was
handled is just now being felt by the
_ taxpayers.

__ The Government has announced that
it is instituting a $10,000,000 payment
plan to assist cranberry growers whose
industry was virtually scuttled by the
untimely and unnecessary scare tactics
of Secretary Flemming of Health, Edu-
cation and Welfare.

__ In addition the Federal government is
how devoting time and money to a drive
designed to increase consumption of cran-

berries by urging people to eat more of
them, ease :

_ At the same time the government is
assisting the caponette industry in its
efforts to overcome the adverse publicity
resulting from the Secretary of Healths
action. The government has purchased
some 12 million pounds of this poultry
at an average cost of 43 1/2c per pound.
On May 4 processors were asked to sub-
mit bids on processing this poultry into
canned, boned meat and once such bids
are accepted the government will lay out

At the same time the Secretary of
Healths efforts to capture a personal spot
in the limelight of publicity has sparked
a rash of books and articles in the na-
tions press that would have the public
believe that virtually all the food we cat,
and even the water we drink, is poison

and likely to cause cancer.

In the words of the United Fresh
Fruit and Vegetable Association, these
articles and books are a hodge-podge of
pretended facts pseudo-scientific state-
ments and barnyard variety nonsense.
They fall apart upon analysis.

The fact that the government is step-
ping in to assist the cranberry and capon
growers is commendable. Certainly these
industries are due all possible assistance
in their attempts to recover from a
knock-out punch delivered as a dirty
blow in the political ring.

At present there is a book out author-
ed by a Mr. William Longgood and en-
titled The Poisons in Your Food, which
is serving as the basis for many of the
scare articles appearing in prominent

publications.

But in commending efforts to assist
these people I can not but condemn the
irresponsibility that created the prob-
lemthe carelessness that sparked the
efforts of the current crop of poison pen
writers and the stupidity that results in
the unnecessary expenditure of the tax-
payers dollar,

And in the opinion of one of the na-
tions most respected scientists, this book
is deserving only to be ignored.

that when the meat is canned and boned
