the pits be located in such a manner

It is recommended that such pits be
ocated at least 100 feet from any spring
or well from which water is obtained. It is
also recommended that such pits be locat-

The Department has also been con-

are having the pits drilled with machinery

Sweet Potato Plants
Must Be Certified
All sweet potato plants, vines, or cut-
tings sold, offered for sale, given away, or
otherwise distributed in the State of
Georgia must by law, be certified by the
Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Certified Georgia plants are easy to
recognize by the certificate tape with
which the bundles have to be tied, This
year the tape is red. Printing on the tape
reads as follows, Certified Sweet Potato
Plants1960. The growers number is
also given.
Out-of-state certified plants can be
tied with state of origin tape, however, a
Georgia certified tag must be attached to
each crate.
Certification is for the purpose of pre-
venting the spread of sweet potato in-
sects and diseases. If these were to be-
come widespread, they could virtually
eliminate the growing of sweet potatoes
in the state.
Persons desiring to have their sweet
potato plants certified should write the
Division of Entomology and Plant In-
dustry, State Department of Agriculture,
19 Hunter St. SW, Atlanta, Ga.
which prevented construction of os in
many areas.
Poultrymen needing guides for con-
struction of poultry pits are urged to con-
tact their county agent or write to the
Veterinary Division, State Department of
Agriculture, 19 Hunter Street, Atlanta.

Court Injunction
Against Hog Feeders
Judge George R. Lilly of the Southern
Judicial Circuit in Valdosta recently
granted a court injunction against L. B.
Flucas and Burt James of Lowndes Coun-
ty to prevent their feeding raw garbage ~
the hogs and prevent their feeding gar-
bage without a license.
It is against the law to feed garbage
to hogs unless the garbage has first been
cooked at a temperature of 212 degrees.
Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. The law is
designed to protect swine and humans
disease known as Vesicular
Examthema which has been eradicated
from Georgia and the nation.
Persons feeding garbage to hogs in
Georgia are required to have a license
issued by the Department of Agriculture
and such swine feeding operations are
inspected by the Department to insure
that such garbage is cooked in compliance
with state law.
Must Cerfify Bees
Before Advertising
No advertisements for sale of bees
will be accepted by the Market Bulletin
unless the bees have been certified by the
Department of Agriculture as being free
of diseases. Persons desiring inspection
should write the Division of Entomology
and Plant Industry, State Dept. of Agri-
culture, 19 Hunter St. SW, Atlanta, Ga.
Farm Population Continues To Drop
Only one person in eight now lives
on the farm compared with one in six
in 1950 and one in three 50 years ago,
according to a report prepared coopera-
tively by the Bureau of the Census, the
Department of Commerce, and the Ag-
ricultural Marketing Service.
Since 1950 the farm population has
decreased by 3.9 million, or 15.5 percent.
Todays farm population is 21.2
million compared with 25.1 million in
1950.
