forecast at 73,200,000 bushels, a
of 13,552,000 bushels from last
yield per acre of 25.0 bushels will

decreased yield will offset the 8
t increase in the acreage for har-
timated at 2,928,000 acres. An un-

ll Indications Now Potuting
A Pretty Good Crop Year
This years crop is 25 million pounds
eelow the record high production of 60
| million pounds produced in 1957 and
about 1 percent below the 1948-57 aver-
age crop of 35.4 million pounds. Pros-
pects in central and northern counties are
- generally better ee those in southern
areas.
PEACH PRODUCTION
Georgias 1959 peach crop (including
~ farm and commercial production) is cur-
rently estimated to be 3 ,200,000 bushels.
This is 200,000 bushels ne than the July
1 forecast and is 800,000 bushels below
the 4,000,000 bushels produced in 1958.
Quality of this years crop has generally
been better than last year, with prices
averaging slightly higher than in 1958.
_ According to Federal-State Market
News Service, a total of 4,725 equivalent
cars had been shipped by August 5, com-
pared to 5,919 cars shipped during the
1958 season. Harvest operations are vir-
tually complete with only a few orchards _
of the late varieties remaining for har-
vest.
EGG PRODUCTION UP
Hens on Georgia farms laid an esti-
1959. This is an increase of 21 million
over the 108 million eggs produced dur-
ing July 1958 but is the same as pro-
duced during June 1959. The large in- |
crease in egg production over a year ago
is the result of an increase in the num-.
ber of layers on hand and a higher rate
of lay.
Layers on Georgia totaled 7,-
349,000 during July compared to 6,624,-
000 one year ago. Rate of lay during
July was 17.6 eggs per layer compared
to 16.4 eggs per layer in July 1908.
COTTON CROP
Georgias 1959 Cotton crop is fore-
cast at 585,000 bales based on information
reported by crop respondents. This is
233,000 bales, or 66 percent, more than
last years small crop of 352,000 bales,
but is 11 percent below the States 1948-
57 average crop of 655,000 bales.
Present prospects on Georgia farms
point to a yield of 425 pounds per acre
which is exceeded by only the record
high 1958 yield of 443 pounds per acre.
Farmers are expected to harvest 660,000
acres of cotton this year, an increase of
279,000 acres from the record low of
381,000 acres harvested on Georgia farms
i last es Ca
during July

By J. FRANK McGILL-
Extension Agronomist
The quality of peanuts for ragker and
PARTICULARLY FOR SEED may be re-
. duced greatly if left in the windrow until
completely dry. Last year was a good. ex-
ample. Although open weather prevailed
throughout most of the harvesting season, _
quality of planting seed this year was not
as high as many growers expected. |
Damaging characteristics in. eta on
such as seed coat slippage (baldheads) and
low germination appear to be directly Boe
sociated with the lowest moisture content
to which peanuts were dried at any time
even though moisture is higher at time of |
shelling. This is believed to be true
whether peanuts are dried Dee) or by
artificial means.
Certified and non- certified peanut seed | eo
growers would do well to follow harvest-_
ing and drying practices which will help
to meet or exceed the standards set forth
by Georgia Crop Improvement Associa-- ee
tion and Georgia Seed Laws..
Where peanuts are being cuntbiied
from the windrow, itis recommended that = =s_>
they be harvested in a semi-dry state. Un-
der most conditions begin as soon as they |
will rattle slightly when handled. This is
usually from two to four days after dig-
ging and shaking. In some cases earlier
combining may be desirable, even though
more time is required for artificial drying.
Probabilities of damage to peanuts due to 2 S
unfavorable harvesting weather also ine
creases the longer peanuts are left in
windrow.
After combining semi-dry, peanuts
should be artificially dried to an average a Ay
moisture content of 8 percent. DRYING
AIR TEMPERATURE SHOULD NOT a
EXCEED 100 F. Temperature exceeding _
100 F. and too rapid drying may adver-
sely affect flavor of peanuts when pro- os
cessed. Such peanuts are also usually sub- ee
ject to excessive breakage and seed GOabi
slippage (baldheads) when shelled. Germ-
ination of seed may also be reduced.
If peanuts are artificially dried in bulk
by use of a one-way directed heated aiy
system, they should not be placed in
depths greater than four feet. No portion
of a lot of peanuts should be dried in the
field or by artificial means below 7 per-
cent moisture content (wet basis),
The above recommendations are based. :
on research conducted by James L. Shep-
herd, Agricultural Engineer at the Tifton
ee
Station and the experiences of Georgia _ as
peanut growers.

tions for harvesting and drying peanuts
