These two crops, which occupy the great-
er part of Georgias cultivated acreage,
are relatively poorly fertilized. Together
they account for 86 percent of the poten-
tial for increased fertilizer use on crops in
Georgia. ; z
It is most important that Georgia
farmers realize that it pays to use recom-
mended amounts of fertilizer on these two
crops. Georgias per acre corn yield in-
creased to an all-time high of 32 bushels
per acre in 1958. However, this yield is
still too low for profitable corn produc-
tion. Research has proved and demon-
strations have shown that an average
yield of 60 bushels of corn can be made
on any of the major soils in Georgia, pro-
vided adequate fertilization and other |
recommended cultural practices are fol-

Farm Production Goods,
Services To Climb Higher
Prices paid by Americas farmers for
production goods and services are likely
to reach new high levels in 1959, accord-
ing to The Farm Cost Situation Report re-
leased by the USDAs Agricultural Re-
search Service.
The report further points out that al-
though prices paid by farmers have been
rising, expenses per unit of output have
remained relatively unchanged. Prices
paid for non farm ' goods and_ ser-
vices used in farm production are report-
ed to have been rising even faster, having

Red Meat Survey
A red meat survey conducted by the
Agricultural Extension Service reveals
that during 1958 Atlanta meat packing
firms and a number of Georgias larger
food chains handled 269,695,619 pounds
of carcass red meat.
In 1957, 321,667,598 pounds of carcass
red meat was handled in the same area,
Clum, Extension Livestock Marketing
Specialist, is due to the reduction in cat-
tle, swine and calf slaughter in the At-
lanta area. ee
Of these amounts, 97,515,568 pounds
| originated in Georgia in 1958 and 163,017- -
600 pounds originated in Georgia in 1957.
In 1957, 158,649,798 pounds of red meat
were imported from other states whereas
in 1958, 171,480,051 pounds were im- _
ported. ae :
A remaining 25,486,782 pounds of the
total were exported and 296,180,816 were
consumed in Georgia in 1957. In 1958,
16,341,750 pounds were exported and
253,353,869 pounds were consumed in Ga,
This study was made to partially de-
termine the red meat balance in Georgia. |
Firm needs as to grades used, source, and
size of carcass preferred were determin-
ed. The information was furnished by
slaughtering plants and branch houses lo-
cated in Atlanta, and four grocery chain
organizations operating 299
Georgia.
