Roundworms Controlled -

By New Antibiotic

Recent trials at South Dakota State
College show that the antibiotic called
hygromycin, when fed to growing-finish-
ing pigs from weaning to market weight,
gave complete control of large intestinal
roundworms.

The South Dakota researchers recom-
mend, however, that this antibiotic be fed
only until the pigs
pounds, because from 100 pounds to mar-
ket weight, hygromycin appeared to re-
duce the amount of feed the pigs ate and
they gained slower. Up to 100 pounds, the
antibiotic gave good, although in some
cases not complete, protection against
roundworms.

The South Dakota experiments also in-
dicate that best over-all results can be

expected from feeding hygromycin plus

another antibiotic up to 100 pounds, Re-
sults showed that a combination of hy-
gromycin and aureomycin fed from wean-
ing time to 100 pounds increased gains by
92 percent over pigs that received no

treatment. When fed as the only antibiotic

for the same period, hygromycin increas-

ed gains 12 percent, and aureomycin 6
percent.

The Weights and Measures and Ware-
house Sections of the Department of Agri-
culture have finished preparation for the
opening of tobacco sales in Ga., July 23.

Weights and measures inspectors of
the department have been checking on
the weighing procedures and equipment
used in Georgia tobacco warehouses. The
warehouse section has been issuing licen-.
ses to warehousemen and receiving ap-
plications from each weigher for state
certification. :

These precautions are taken by the
Department of Agriculture to protect the
tobacco farmer as well as the warehouse-
man and buyer. Before weights and mea-

sures inspectors checked the weighing

methods, truck weights often varied as
much as 30 pounds in the same warehouse. |

This unfair difference was due to the : 7
use of unauthorized hand trucks in trans-

porting tobacco. Today, after an inspector
has completed his check, he records the
accuracy of the scale and averages the
baskets for a particular warehouse;

An approval sticker for the current
year is then placed on each truck allowed
to be used in the sale. Then, when an in-
spector re-enters the warehouse for sub-
sequent checks, he can make sure that on-
ly the trucks bearing a 1959 O.K. are
being used.

In addition he will re-check the scales

and the tare set up for the particular

warehouse. Without these precautions the

scale might serve only as an estimate ma-

chine. :

_ As a further precaution, a law was
passed in 1956 which requires all persons
weighing tobacco to be licensed and bond-_
ed with the Department of Agriculture,
through the Warehouse Section. This must
be taken care of by the warehouse men
before opening sales, oe S

Inaccurate weighing procedures are :
the exception, not the rule. Most of the

scales checked by the inspectors have
been found to be operating properly, with-
in the prescribed tolerance. State inspec-
tors will be working constantly through-
out the 1959 tobacco season to keep the
scales accurate as a protection to the buy-
er and seller.
