Complete Forms Properly

- To Get Bangs Payment

Indemnity payments for brucellosis
reactor cattle have been slow in reach-
ing some farmers. In many cases these
delays could have been avoided if the
necessary forms had been properly filled
out and mailed to the pro-authorities.

Three forms must be completed be-
fore indemnity payments can be made to
farmers selling Brucellosis infected cattle.

First, a form must be completed at the
sales barn giving the proceeds of the sale
(what the cow or cattle brought when
sold); second, a-post mortem report must
be filled out by the inspector in charge
at the slaughter house where the cow or
cattle are slaughtered; third, a cleaning
and disinfectant card must be filled out
by the farmer when the proper cleaning
and disinfectant measures have been made
on the premises where infected cattle

Misuse Of Fumigants
Destroys Peach Trees

Ber. Savage and R. A. Hayden

~ Georgia Experiment Station
Experiment, Georgia

During the past year several thou-
sand peach trees were killed in Georgia
by the misuse of peach tree borer fumi-
gant materials normally applied in the
fall,

Paradichlorobenzene emulsified in oil
should never be poured directly on the
trunks of trees despite the recommenda-
tion to that, effect by certain manufac-
turers. This emulsion should be applied
in a circle about one to two inches from
the trunk of the tree, then several shovel-

-fuls of dirt placed around the tree. Care

should be taken in applying the first
shovelful -of dirt to avoid getting the
emulsion on the trunk. This dirt should
be removed after four to six weeks,
especially on younger trees, and replaced
with fresh dirt to prevent winter injury
to the trunk.

The same general precautions should

be used in applying ethylene dichloride .

emulsion. These borer control materials

should never come in contact with the

bark of the peach tree. Outright killing of

Seedsmen Will Study
Better Seed Varieties

A new feature of the Seed Short Course
this year should result in better service
to Georgia farmers'in terms of availabil-
ity of seed of the best adapted
varieties, according to Cecil Blackwell,
Extension Horticulturist-Project Leader,
and J. R. Johnson, Extension Agronomist-
Project Leader.

The new feature consists of two com-
mittee meetings composed of Georgia
Seedmen and College of Agriculture staff
members, One committee will discuss
vegetable crop seeds and the other field
crop seeds. Seedsmen serving on these

Service and the experiment stations con-

not it will be necessary for us to lower

Farmers will be kept advised of the

Bulletin and through releases to their lo-

the trees oftentimes results from direct

application to the bark. Also, care should

be taken not to apply materials in which
- the emulsion has broken down, since seri-

ous injury is likely to occur, It was dem-
onstrated in the spring of 1957 that some
of the newer varieties such as Dixired

were much more susceptible to injury
from these chemicals than was the Elberta

variety.
-. Most of the injury in 1957 was trace-
able to paradichlorobenzene emulsion

poured the material directly on the trunks.

facturers directions. Ethylene dichloride

lencrecs directions fae use; thn is, not to-
pour it on the trunk, and little damage
resulted from the use of this material.

Complete Forms Prope |

(Continued From Page 1)

barn, and the slaughter house must send
in the form prepared by them to the Agri-
cultural Research Service, United States
Department of Agriculture, Atlanta, be-
fore indemnity payments can. be made.
The veterinarian will issue the cleaning
and disinfectant card to the farmer who
has Brucellosis infected cattle. The USDA
has already issued to the sales barns and
slaughter houses the forms they need. _

To avoid a delay in indemnity pay-
ments persons who fill out the forms
should check to see that the forms are
complete so as not to have them sent back
to be completed.

Farmers are urged, when the veteri-
narian gives him a permit to sell his in-
fected animals, to take the animals to the
place of sale he (the farmer) designates
to the veterinarian. It is not wise to sell
to other individuals who say they will
see that the Brucellosis infected cow or
cattle will get to the sale designated to
the veterinarian. The cattle may get to
the designated sale or to another sale or
even to another state. This will hold up
indemnity payments indefinitely until the
cow or cattle can be located. By then ad-
ditional herds can be infected.

The faster the Brucellosis infected cat-
tle get to a sale, are sold and slaughtered,
the faster Brucellosis can be eradicated.
