SEED LAW AMENDMENT
WILL AID PLANT BUYER

Following a number of complaints
from farmers that they have been
shortchanged when buying plants in
bundles or lots, the recent session of the
Georgia Legislature passed a bill spon-
sored by the State Department of Agri-
culture to protect the farmer from such

4 h:hitneaman none SOE ne

The bill, an amendment to the state
seed law, is designed to insure that
farmers will get an honest count and
the correct variety when buying plants.

The new legislation makes it a mis-
demeanor for any person to misrepre-
sent the count or variety of any agricul-
tural plant sold in the state.

Inspectors of the Georgia Depart-
ment of Agriculture will enforce the

in the state. Florida agriculture officials
have been notified of the amendment in
view of the fact that many plants used
by Georgia farmers are purchased from

Weights Inspectors Aid
Consumer - Merchant

Through regular checks on scales and
pre-packaged foods, the weights and mea
sures inspectors of the State Department
of Agriculture saved the Georgia house-
wife more than $260,000 during 1957.

In addition, merchants saved $116.
973.41 as a result of the examinations of
their scales, it was announced by Paul
Morris, Director of the Weights and Mea-
sures Section of the Markets Division of
the State Department of Agriculture.

The state inspectors make periodic
visits to check all commercial scales in
the state to protect the merchant from pos-
sible loss of profit and the consumer from
short weights, :

During 1957, 33,905 such examinations
were made in the state with 1,151 of these
scales being condemned and 28,003 ap-
proved,

aging

In these inspections, Mr. Morris esti-
mates that the consumer was saved $258 -
396.70 and the merchant $116,973.41.

Pre-packaged foods are also checked
by the section. Total savings for the con-
sumer on the packages amounted to $3,-
140.96. The inspectors weighed 230,877
packages of pre-packaged foods put up in
stores, condemning 18,833 as incorrect.

Out of 472 farm milk tank calibrations |
tested, errors amounted to $7,815.68.

Not only does the inspector protect the
merchant and consumer from errors in
the actual weighing of foods, he is also the
restraining effect in protecting the legiti-
mate retailer from the unfair competition
of the retailer who advertises imnossibly
low prices and then covers the loss by
short weights to the purchaser.

Items found most subject to this kind
of unfair competition are poultry, and all

National Ag Association
Passes Two Resolutions

Editors Note: Following are two reso-
Jutions passed at the recent annual meet-
ing of the National Association of State
Departments of Agriculture which are of
oncern to Georgia farmers and Market
Bulletin readers.)

Public Relations For Agriculture

WHEREAS, American agriculture is
experiencing a most unfavorable eco-
nomic position; and

WHEREAS, the imperative need for
keeping the nations agricultural produc-
tion machine economically strong if it is
to meet the demands of a rapidly growing
population is evident to every properly
informed person; and

_ WHEREAS, too little is being done to.
properly acquaint the people of the coun-
try with the serious condition of its ag-
riculture; and

WHEREAS, the lack of full and com-
plete information resulting from a con-
tinuous flow of misleading statements
from official and unofficial sources is fast
developing the most unfavorable attitude
on the part of the public toward agricul-
ture that any economic group has experi-
enced in a quarter of a century;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLV-
ED that the National Association of Com-
missioners, Secretaries and Directors of
Agriculture in Convention assembled at
- Portsmouth, New Hampshire, September
29 through October 3, 1957 deplores the
present economic condition of American
agriculture; that this Association respect-
fully urge that every possible effort be
made by the Secretary of Agriculture and
all other national leaders in the field of
agriculture to correct this unfair economic
igs in which the American farmer
inds himself today, and to use every
media available to keep the public inform-
ed as to the importance of agriculture to
the well being of every individual per-
son, and to properly and completely in-
form all the people as to the relative eco-
nomic position of the American farmer;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a
copy of this resolution be sent to the Sec-
retary of Agriculture, the Chairmen of
the Senate and House Agriculture Com-
mittees of the National Congress, the

American Farm Bureau Federation, the -
National Grange, National Association of
Farm Cooperatives, and the Farmers
Union and that it be made immediately
available to press, radio and television.

Hog Cholera Suppression

WHEREAS, for over one hundred
years this nation has been forced to live
with hog cholera, which has been ex-
tremely costly and is contrary to the

American principle of eradicating animal |

diseases; and

WHEREAS, the development of meth-
ods for immunizing swine against hog
cholera has been developed which does

has 28 poundsmore than one and a half
times as much plant nutrients per bag.

A bag of 4-8-6 has about 40 pounds of
filler. A bag of 4-12-12 contains only ten
pounds of filler, Bergeaux explained.
That means it takes more bags, more
freight charges and extra labor to fertilize
a field with the same amount of plant nu-
trients using a 4-8-6 than it does using a
4-12-12. And, excess bags and freight and
labor all add up to extra costs the farmer
must pay, the agronomist said.

Bergeaux reported 144,375 tons of 4-
8-6 and 126,032 tons of 4-8-8 sold in Geor-
gia in 1957. pene

College Students Study
Feeding Time For Cows

The answer to the question Can a
cow eat dinner in eight minutes, is now
a subject of research at Washington State _
College, according to a recent report from
there. ;

The purpose is to determine the ef-
fect of pelleted grain rations on the rate
of consumption by cows in an elevated
walk-through milking parlor. Dairy Sci-
entist T. H. Blosser at Washington State
says this is the first experiment of its kind
to show the effect of pelleting on rate of
grain consumption by dairy cows. _.

Twenty college cows are being used
in the experiment and they are divided
into groups according to breed, level of
production, and body weight. No ex-
tremely slow milkers are being used. As
an incentive to eat faster, the cows are be-_
ing given more than they are likely to eat
in 8 minutes, If milking is completed at
the end of 8 minutes, the cow is released
from the parlor stall, but if milking is
still in process, a plywood cap is placed
over the grain to let bossy know that din-
ner is over. Dr. Blosser says the study will
be completed on Nov. 1, 1958.
