SEED LAW AMENDMENT WILL AID PLANT BUYER Following a number of complaints from farmers that they have been shortchanged when buying plants in bundles or lots, the recent session of the Georgia Legislature passed a bill spon- sored by the State Department of Agri- culture to protect the farmer from such 4 h:hitneaman none SOE ne The bill, an amendment to the state seed law, is designed to insure that farmers will get an honest count and the correct variety when buying plants. The new legislation makes it a mis- demeanor for any person to misrepre- sent the count or variety of any agricul- tural plant sold in the state. Inspectors of the Georgia Depart- ment of Agriculture will enforce the in the state. Weights Inspectors Aid Consumer - Merchant Through regular checks on scales and pre-packaged foods, the weights and mea sures inspectors of the State Department of Agriculture saved the Georgia house- wife more than $260,000 during 1957. In addition, merchants saved $116. 973.41 as a result of the examinations of their scales, it was announced by Paul Morris, Director of the Weights and Mea- sures Section of the Markets Division of the State Department of Agriculture. The state inspectors make periodic visits to check all commercial scales in the state to protect the merchant from pos- sible loss of profit and the consumer from short weights, : During 1957, 33,905 such examinations were made in the state with 1,151 of these scales being condemned and 28,003 ap- proved, aging In these inspections, Mr. Morris esti- mates that the consumer was saved $258 - 396.70 and the merchant $116,973.41. Pre-packaged foods are also checked by the section. Total savings for the con- sumer on the packages amounted to $3,- 140.96. The inspectors weighed 230,877 packages of pre-packaged foods put up in stores, condemning 18,833 as incorrect. Out of 472 farm milk tank calibrations | tested, errors amounted to $7,815.68. Not only does the inspector protect the merchant and consumer from errors in the actual weighing of foods, he is also the restraining effect in protecting the legiti- mate retailer from the unfair competition of the retailer who advertises imnossibly low prices and then covers the loss by short weights to the purchaser. Items found most subject to this kind of unfair competition are poultry, and all (Continued On Page 8) Georgia, First: PEANUTS BROILERS att sh i '@ NAVAL FOREST LANDS af Bhs} @ PIMENTO PEPPER TORES IMPROVED PECANS PAGE TWO - MARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Editorial and Executive Offices State Agriculture Building 19 Hunter Street, S.W.
