FIRE ANT MOUND SHOWN AT LEFT; ANTS FEEDING ON UNOPENED OKRA FLOWER BUD SHOW DESTRUCTIVENESS
NUMBER 33
Georgia Farmers Asked To Watch For Infestations, Take Immediate Steps To Halt Pests When They Are Discovered In Fields, Pastures.
B Georgia Counties
Reporting Fire Ants
Georgia farmers are being asked to
ep an eye cocked for possible infesta-
ions of fire ants on their farms. The small
nsects that have been in the news so
auch lately can be controlled but are
auch easier to control if discovered early.
The fire ant, a pest of crops, livestock
nd humans, is believed to have come
riginally from South America but to-
ay it infests some 20 million acres of land
a the five Gulf States and Georgia.
W. E. Blasingame, director of the
reorgia Department of Entomology, says
ae fire ant has now spread to at least 23
reorgia counties. Latest reports from his
ffice verify reports of fire ant infesta-
ion in Fulton, DeKalb, Bibb, Talbot,
chley, Crisp, Dodge, Dougherty, Thomas,

Alabama Cattleman Eyes
Fire Ant Control Cost
A recent letter from an Alabama cat-

the Georgia Department of Entomology,
points out the danger of fire ant infesta-
tion and the problem it has created in Ala-
bama.
The letter from Price C. McLemore
of the Alabama Cattlemans Association,
reads in part as follows:
T am chairman of the Fire Ant Com-
mittee of the Alabama Cattlemens As-
sociation and in this capacity I have given
this problem considerable study both
from a personal and from the Cattlemens
Associations standpoint. I am personally
fortunate in as much as on my lands there
is an extremely light infestation of this
insect, but I am frankly terrified over the
infestation that I know is to come. I only

The fire ant has a painful sting that
causes boil-like sores on human beings.
It is becoming increasingly difficult in
some states to hire cotton pickers and
other farm helpers to work in heavily in-
tested fields. The pest often severly in-
jures unprotected animals such as new-
born calves and pigs, newly-hatched
quail and other wildlife and poultry.
Feeding both above and below ground,
the ants seriously damage many vegetable
crops, including okra, collards, cabbage,
germinating
seed corn and other plant life, It injuries
pasture grasses, cereal and forage crops,
nursery stock and fruit trees. The huge,
hard-crusted mounds that house the ant
colonies mar lawns, damage pasture lands
and interfere with use of cultivating,
mowing and harvesting machinery.
In the home the ant eats meat, butter,
cheese and nuts. Sometimes it even
gnaws holes through clothing.
Modern insecticides and application
control. and
even eradicate infestations of the pest.
Small infestations in Tennessee and in
isolated parts of other states have ap-
parently been wiped out.
The U. S. Dept. of Agriculture says
that heptachlor, chlordane, dieldrin and
-aldrin will effectively control the ant.

of this insect before it had become so
wide-spread.
T have been informed from a reliable
source that $25,000 would have eliminated
this pest from this country when it was
first postively identified in 1930. I believe
if this information, at this time, had been
as widely publicized by the press as it is
now being done the $25,000 would have
been readily available. At the present
time the cost for eradication is not known,
but in my opinion will be a tremendous
sum, exceeding any figures I have seen
yet mentioned. The cost of eradication
will never be any cheaper and the longer
