The fire ant has a painful sting that causes boil-like sores on human beings. It is becoming increasingly difficult in some states to hire cotton pickers and other farm helpers to work in heavily in- tested fields. The pest often severly in- jures unprotected animals such as new- born calves and pigs, newly-hatched quail and other wildlife and poultry. Feeding both above and below ground, the ants seriously damage many vegetable crops, including okra, collards, cabbage, germinating seed corn and other plant life, It injuries pasture grasses, cereal and forage crops, nursery stock and fruit trees. The huge, hard-crusted mounds that house the ant colonies mar lawns, damage pasture lands and interfere with use of cultivating, mowing and harvesting machinery. In the home the ant eats meat, butter, cheese and nuts. Sometimes it even gnaws holes through clothing. Modern insecticides and application control. and even eradicate infestations of the pest. Small infestations in Tennessee and in isolated parts of other states have ap- parently been wiped out. The U. S. Dept. of Agriculture says that heptachlor, chlordane, dieldrin and -aldrin will effectively control the ant. _ Control over large areas requires concert- Bob White LIVESTOCK WANTED $3.50 pr.; $3.75. pr. Guinea ed action, especially Whecs uncultivated areas are involved. The cost of treatment is estimated at $2.50 to $5 per acre de-. pending on the intensity of infestation. Farmers desiring more information on the fire ant may obtain a free copy of Leaflet 350, The Imported Fire Ant How to Control It, by writing the Office of Information, U. S. Department of Ag- riculture, Washington 25, D.C. In the meantime Mr, Blasingame has requested that farmers discovering fire ant infestations notify him at the State Department of Entomology, 19 Hunter St., S. W. Atlanta 3, Georgia. Alabama Cattleman Eyes (Continued From Page 1) wish that I had realized the destructive- ness and the great economic importance of this insect before it had become so wide-spread. T have been informed from a reliable source that $25,000 would have eliminated this pest from this country when it was first postively identified in 1930. I believe if this information, at this time, had been as widely publicized by the press as it is now being done the $25,000 would have been readily available. At the present time the cost for eradication is not known, but in my opinion will be a tremendous sum, exceeding any figures I have seen yet mentioned. The cost of eradication will never be any cheaper and the longer the delay in instigating a control and eradication programthe more monu- _ makes his re thors he) soil, I fin average to maintain a brood co my cost of production for a increased by $18. This figure is from my personal knowledge perience. It required five acre: off-spring per year. The cost of terial, the handling and applicatio proximately $9 per acre per app It is generally believed that one ap tion will last approximately thr This gives a cost per acre per year for fire ant control, since it requires acres for each brood cow and its off-sy this makes a cost of $15 per cow. The average percentage c: from a commercial cattle operation i sidered to be very good when it is cent. This adds an additional $3 i cost of the 80 calves produced from 100 head of cattle giving a total c each calf produced of $18 for fire an trol. The weight of the average calf : in Alabama is approximately 400 po with a selling price of 15 per pound. the 400 pounds of beef produced it require 120 pounds to pay for the co controlling the fire antleaving the that it will cost the State on alone $30 million a year for Control. : quail, Ringneck Doves, White Fan Tail Pigeons, $2.75 pr; Green Head Mallard Drakes, $2.50 ea; Speckled Guinea fowl, $3. pr.; $3.25; solid pigs, (cavies) No. less than 2 prs. - $2.25 pr.
