Towns County Certified
As Free of Brucellosis

Towns County in Northeast Georgia

is the second county in the

tified as brucellosis free under the ex-
panded program to eradicate the livestock
disease in Georgia by 1960.
Wilkinson county was the first county
to be certified under the program which
was expanded following a $300,000 state

appropriation in 1956.

The expanded drive to eradicate the
disease which costs Georgia farmers thou-
sands of dollars every year and causes.un-
dulent fever in humans is administered by
the State Department of Agriculture with
the assistance of the U. S. Dept. of Ag-

riculture.

of cattle were tested in February alone.
The expanded drive against brucellosis.
disease is also noticeable in the fewer
number of diseased cattle going through =}
livestock barns. A few months ago seven
percent of all cattle going through live-
stock sales barns were infected but today
this has been cut to less than 2 percent.
addition to Towns and Wilkinson,
testing in 10 to 12 other counties indicates
that these counties will soon be eligible
for certification.
A total of 581 herds were tested for
brucellosis disease in Towns County. The
infection rate found through testing was
two-tenths of one percent of the cattle
and five-tenths of one percent of the
