GGS. NEED REFRIGERATION

Cooling Is Necessary
To Maintain Qualify

H. W Bennett, poultry specialist with
the Agricultural Extension Service in
Athens, says more and more egg produ-
cers are realizing the importance of pro-
viding refrigeration for their eggs, especi-
ally during the summer months.

No poultryman can hope to put out a
high quality egg in summer months with-
out refrigeration, Bennett says, adding,
Begs can lose their quality in a very

short time on a hot day if they are not-

cooled quickly and quality can not be re-
stored in an egg once it is lost.

The poultry specialist says if Georgia
is to hold its present position or expand
its production of commercial eggs, poul-
trymen must sell a quality product and
for quality during hot weather, refrigera-
-tion is necessary.

Bennett says when the temperature is
70 degrees Fahrenheit or above egg
quality drops fast and with housewives
demanding more and better quality a
poultryman cant afford not to refrige-
rate.

Jn discussing the refrigeration of eggs,

- Bennett makes four observations:

~ 1, On the farm is no place to EXPERI-
MENT with refrigeration.

2. The cost of refrigeration can be
kept down without sacrificing quality.

3. It is a waste to build or buy that
which will not be adequate for needs
within a short time.

- 4. To overload a piece of machinery

shows a lack of good judgment.

Bennett says the size of a refrigera-
tion bex and the size of the refrigeration
unit needed by any poultryman will de-

| pend on the size of the flock but that
_many poultrymen can build or have built
~a retrigeration box that will reduce the

initial cost.

The engineering department: of the
College of Agriculture, University of
Georgia has recently published a bulle-
tin entitled: Refrigerated Farm Egg
Coolers. The poultry specialist says this
bulletin is one of the best of its kind in
the nation.

Georgia egg producers may
one of these bulletins free of
through their local county agents.

Bale and Half Cotton

- Results of Siibestrol

(Continued from Page D

Geo stilbestrol-fed cattle must be marketed at
_ heavier weights than those not given
stilbestrol.
"This may account, Dr. Byerly said, for
the fact that average weights of steers
marketed last fall generally exceeded
those of cattle marketed during the cor-
responding period in 1954, sometimes by
as much as 75 pounds per animal. Since
the feeding of stilbestrol (or diethystil-
bestrol) was approved in November 1954,
: an estimated 5 million cattle have been
fattened on rations containing this drug.
Despite the lack of any advantage in
feeding time with stilbestrol, Byerly said,
research definitely shows that the drug
a _ improves the daily rate of gain in cattle,
_ permitting substantial savings in amount 4
of teed required for finishing, His re- -
